Journey to Godhood Begins in Frieren

Chapter 228: Yami-chan

"T‑This is impossible!"

Staring at Shichen's perfectly unscathed fingers, the girl's previously calm face finally changed; her delicate, petite features were filled with disbelief.

"Even when the truth is right in front of you, you still refuse to believe it?" Shichen asked with a smile, flicking away the blade that the girl's arm had become.

Ding—a crisp sound echoed in the alley.

"Y‑…You… what on earth are you?"

The girl took two steps back, watching him warily.

"Me? Just a passing Principal."

"Principal?"

The girl did not quite understand what he meant—nor could she accept that her attack had failed.

Suddenly her golden hair fanned out; the tips morphed into sharp blades and lashed at Shichen like claws.

Shichen still did not move, but he figured his clothes were not immune to damage, so he simply waved his hand, parrying every strike.

"Impossible!" the girl muttered again.

"Didn't you see it for yourself?" Shichen said, smiling.

"Then try this!"

No sooner had she spoken than her hair reshaped into a series of golden fists that pounded toward Shichen.

This time Shichen was unsure whether he could nullify the blows, so he raised his hand and spread a barrier in front of himself.

Thud, thud, thud—heavy muffled impacts landed on the transparent shield; not a single ripple appeared, and the barrier remained unscathed.

Seeing the plainly visible barrier, the girl finally ceased her assault.

"Ready to give up?" Shichen asked.

"Why… do you have that kind of power?" she could not help asking.

"Before I answer, could you tell me your name?"

"My name? That's not important, is it?"

"It is to me—after all, you're so cute."

"Y‑…You can call me Golden Darkness," the girl—Golden Darkness—replied in a small, embarrassed voice.

"Golden Darkness? Then I'll call you Yami-chan."

"Yami-chan? D‑Do… do as you like," a pink flush crept onto her cheeks.

"Yami-chan, who sent you to kill me?"

"I… I can't say."

"Professional to the end? Afraid that won't work~"

"Th‑Then I— W‑What?"

Yami-chan's eyes widened as Shichen suddenly appeared right in front of her.

"Time for me to keep my promise."

"W‑What… what are you doing?"

Before she could react, Shichen scooped her up at the waist—her bottom facing forward.

"I told you I'd punish you. For a girl like you, do you know what punishment fits best?"

"What are you— Mmph!"

"P‑Please, stop…"

Her attacks were useless, and she could not break free. To keep resisting would only bring more humiliation.

"Oh? So you admit your mistake now?" Shichen paused and asked.

"Still not admitting?"

"Wait! I know I was wrong!" Yami-chan blurted.

"Do you really know?"

"I really do!"

"Then what was your mistake?"

"I… shouldn't have attacked you…"

"And?"

"And…? That's all, isn't it?"

"Looks like you still don't understand."

Shichen shook his head and raised his hand again.

"Wait— Ah!"

Smack! Shichen's palm came down without mercy.

"You— Mmph!"

"P‑Please, stop!" Yami-chan cried out, biting back the pain.

"Hm? Why?" Shichen glanced at her now‑scarlet face.

"I… I hate this!"

"Why hate it?"

"I hate… perverted things!"

"A spanking isn't perverted—this is punishment. You were tricked, and I'm teaching you a lesson."

"Tricked?" Yami-chan looked at him, puzzled.

"Yami-chan, someone from another planet sent you to kill me, right? Because I'm their fiancé?"

"No need to hide it. I guessed as much. But is it really wise to cover for the one who set you up?"

"What do you mean?"

"He might have… lied to you."

"What?"

"Think about it: he gave you no useful intel at all, did he? Didn't even tell you I fought Zastin, right?"

"Zastin? Who's that?"

"The strongest swordsman of Planet Deviluke. Important info, don't you think?"

Yami-chan fell silent.

For an assassin, that intel was crucial. Deviluke was a ruling planet—anyone beyond its borders knew of it. And if Shichen had fought its top swordsman, his strength was self‑evident.

A target's power sets the mission's danger and reward, yet her employer had told her nothing.

They had put her in mortal danger.

"And that guy definitely slandered me too."

"Slandered? How so?"

"Better to hear it from the person involved."

"The person…?"

"Shichen!"

Before Yami-chan could finish, a girlish voice rang out from above; a figure in a white alien bodysuit dropped from the sky.

"Lala-hime…?"

Without Shichen saying a word, Yami-chan recognized her at once.

"Shichen, are you okay?"

The moment Lala landed, she threw herself into his arms.

Shichen steadied her with one arm. "Why wouldn't I be? What brings you here?"

"Lacospo contacted me—he said he sent Golden Darkness to kill you!"

"Lacospo?" Shichen repeated the tongue‑twisting name.

"He's a prince from Gaama Planet—one of the suitors my dad lined up for me," Lala explained.

"Your dad sure causes trouble."

"Let's not talk about that. Golden Darkness is a top‑tier galactic threat—a legendary assassin. Are you hurt?"

Lala released him and gripped his shoulders in worry.

"Do I look hurt?" Shichen smiled back.

"Then… where's Golden Darkness? Don't tell me Lacospo lied again!"

Lala pouted.

"Take a look."

Shichen angled his body to reveal Yami-chan still tucked against his side.

"Huh?"

Only then did Lala notice the girl; she circled around to see her face clearly.

"Who's this little girl? Don't say she's Golden Darkness?"

Yami-chan's face remained blank, but inside she was mortified.

"That's her," Shichen confirmed.

"Golden Darkness is this small? She's… adorable!"

"Adorable…" Yami-chan blushed yet again.

"Can I call you Yami-chan? Please don't kill Shichen, okay?"

"Do I look capable of killing him right now?" Yami-chan shot back.

"Oh, right—he already subdued you," Lala said cheerfully.

"Lala-hime, you're awfully protective of Shichen," Yami-chan frowned.

"Of course! Shichen is my boyfriend. I like him!" Lala declared openly.

"Shichen didn't threaten you, did he?"

"He'd never do that."

"So that's how it is…"

"See? I told you he tricked you," Shichen said.

"But… I accepted the contract. No matter what, I have to finish it."

"Really? In your current state? You've already lost to me, and your life is in my hands."

Yami-chan had no reply.

"Shichen, what are you going to do with Yami-chan?" Lala asked curiously.

"Good question—any thoughts?"

"Whatever you decide. But Lacospo is the real culprit; we can't let him go."

"Naturally—though I don't even know where he—"

"Golden Darkness, what are you doing!"

A thunderous voice burst from the sky. Moments later, a spaceship slowly appeared overhead.
