Chapter 7: Housing Plan
Olivia kept her promise to the woman and over the following weeks they met at least once a week. In a short time she let her father with safeguarding 8 thousand gold coins worth of money but it is only the beginning.
Because as soon as her workshop was finished the real money making business started. The molten stone which is the main ingredient in her indestructible glass manufacturing process is not found anywhere but there is a cave with it near the castle.
These stones are even used in a lot of places with in the castle. Ned allowed a few of her trusted men to help in moving the stoned into the last basement where her large workshop is located.
Olivia changed the body strengthening potion from the marrow cleansing to a formula that create power in the muscle, bones and blood. After getting rid impurities from the body with the last potion, she can start getting stronger. This new potion is similar to a body cultivation in a bottle. The more the drinks, the more powerful she grows.
After three months of strengthening her body she can lift the large pot on her own but Ned was worried so the Master Blacksmith is there to help her pour out the solution on the wall shapers.
The operation took a moth but since tens of walls can be made in one day, the warehouse is soon filled with a few hundred of indestructible glass walls ready to sell.
Ned saw this and then decided to send a letter to all the houses calling them for a feast to celebrate the birth of his daughter.
Olivia did not go to attend such a tedious event. She let her maid go though. She spent the time making a new batch of beauty pills which have now made a debut into the southern market. All the ladies are clamoring to buy a bottle with three pills for 50 silver coins.
Emma thought to help her sell the product to the filthy rich nobles in the south. It is ironic they have to go to the brothels to buy the pills which helps Olivia with product delivery without fear of counterfeits.
Not to mention the appearance of her pills is special, if one is a fake it is clear to see. Many alchemist bought the pills to study the materials but because the formula that Olivia use changes and demands several solutions to be made and mixed then the entire thing to be boiled until it changes the color.
It is impossible to trace the herbs even the citadel masters tried and failed. This way of selling allows her identity to remain hidden. The world will not bother her with requests.
Ned showed the lords of the North the glass houses and the thriving crops inside. All the lords became envious when they saw the rows of tens of glass houses.
The harvest here will be astronomical. 5 thousand gold coins for 10 glass houses. Some could only afford less some wanted more but three million gold notes was collected by the end of the second month.
"Well? What are you going to do?" Ned felt his head buzzing with ideas. He has always wanted to better his home so they will not be ridiculed as barbarians who eat their young by the other kingdoms.
Olivia has just told him to use the money towards the betterment of the North. He turned to her "If you were me what would you do?"
"How about focusing on what matters before anything else? The small folks should be provided with housing to shelter them from the cold. I have the construction paste, all you need is to get man power and ideal structural designs." Olivia offered.
"Every housing district should have precise and functional drainage systems. We can not afford to have several places smelling like the sewer, most importantly it will prevent diseases from spreading." Olivia has a formula for a powder which can dissolve waste, the sewer system should pull all the waste into a tank where she can melt it all away.
"That is for the minor lords to take care of." Ned interjected.
"Fine, then get a good sketch artist to design an ideal housing design for each lands and invite them one by one to discuss with them. You will provide the materials all they need to do is pay for the men power." She explained.
"There should be strict inspections to ensure they are not scamming the materials. This way the entire North will suddenly improve simultaneously."
"When everyone is housed nicely we improve our towns and design new shopping designs." She offered.
"That is awfully ambitious." He raised an eyebrow.
"Towns in the territory of each lord is technically the residing lord's responsibility. Then do the same thing as before if they are willing. If they don't want to pay for the development, you will take over the place and get all the income when it is operational." She saw him showing a worried look.
"For now, focus on the housing. Try to get a good designer from the masters or from Qarth. Don't use any of your south contact. Non of those people want to see the North prosper. Not a single one. The lower we remain, the easier it is to control us." Ned heard her words but the note is suggesting something for him he just doesn't know what.
"I can design a sample for you with the sewage system and everything." She suddenly offered. "But I won't do it for free."
Her own tower will be finished soon. It took a few weeks for the job to be done properly. A while back she made a peculiar formula for a construction paste that will hold the building and turn as hard as metal when it dries. There is also a warm stone that can be made from a cold stone found inside the Winter lake.
Olivia has included this material in the construction of her tower, it will make the tower warm even when a fire is not lit. The Warm stone is a peculiar material that will remain hot as long at the surrounding environment is cold.
The It doesn't need to be replaced nor does it increase the temperature suddenly. The stone will remain in the same temperature it was when it was first made. This temperature is determined by the temperature of the main ingredient which is the cold stone from the lake. If it is colder, the resulting warm stone will be hotter.
They used the paste to make blocks and used the warm stone on the floor and some walls as bricks and flat stone for the floor then use the concrete paste to glue it all together then mix it with some soil and gravel to plaster the walls. The old tower looks as good as new with indestructible glass windows.
The money from the lords is still coming in. This money is mostly hers but she is curious what her father would do given the funds. Olivia has ways to make more money in the future so she is not afraid to be generous.
A week went by and she delivered a detailed plan for the known supporters of the Stark family. The plans included the overall structure of each land. The lords castle, the small folks housing and allocated farm lands for each household. There is a clear sewer system and the path for the roads still to be build in the future.
"Do we really have so much space?" Ned asked seeing the design.
"We sure do. This is one of the biggest kingdoms in all the lands. If we use it right, nothing is impossible. Lets start with house Reed and the neighbors along with Bear Island."
Olivia offered to clear the stubborn weeds and steel vines that has been preventing the north from farming in a few mountains.
"Will it really look like this in the end?" Ned looked at a prosperous lands in the drawing and sighed.
"I used the men you gave me to investigate each place and this is the feasible plan. Call them and discuss it with them. In the mean time, I will be spending my money on exotic items. Pleas excuse me." After the initial three million she gave to her father, she made a lot more from the pills and she is now doing internal design of the tower.
"Wait!" Ned stood up and offered her his hand to shake. Shaking it she looked curious. "You have worked hard. If this succeeds, the North will never be the same." She could swear there is excitement in his eyes.
"Good luck." She soon left him to meet with the people she had requested to meet her in her tower. They will be here only for a few hours.
While she was traveling the North mapping out the terrain she came across several merchant groups selling different items. They like bringing seeds to sell in the North. She saw corn and rice. Today they are bringing more of it and other resources she might like.
What she is really looking forward to is the furniture she ordered from them to bring here all the way from the territory of the iron bank.
She ordered a talented structural engineer to put a plumbing system in her tower. As a result she is busy for a long time.
"Ned, it's already 10 evening when are you coming to bed?" His wife came and found him looking at several large parchments. One minute he is confused the next he is laughing happily.
"What is so amazing that I will be left alone at night?" She whines cutely. Ned stood up and hit the designs but even as he sleeps at knight he wonders if the North in those parchments will actually exist in the real world.
His daughter did an amazing job. Every land is used perfectly even the places that were considered waste lands. All the dangerous woods are surrounded by formidable walls with only a few gates where the local lords can monitor whatever comes out.
The place under his own jurisdiction is transformed completely in the design. The perfect attention to details for every road, house, tower and even the local clinic.
The town looks more lavish and clean. The concrete grounds and stone walls. The shops with large glass doors and marble floors it all looks marvel. The floor is made with the same concrete but then a colorless thick paste is painted on top making the ground smooth and shiny as if marble material was used. This is the thick flame resistant paste made by Olivia.
Ned has seen the construction paste she was talking about on her tower and the shining marble floors and white ceiling. The place is made with lavish looking and strong materials as if a king lives there.
Ned Stark has no reason to distrust his strongest ally's ability so he sent letters to the three houses hoping they come over soon. Especially Bear Island because theirs is a security issue that has plagued them for centuries.
The Island will no longer be accessible from all sides Olivia made a plan that made a strong concrete wall in a span of a few months all around the Island. It covers the main castle, the small folks and their lands all at once.
"Put the items through there." The items are now delivered and her new tower will feel like home in no time. Her two maids have now become her closest companions.
In the past month, a small piece of land near her tower was cleared and a magnificent glass garden was built using her indestructible glass. It is like a large house but with a beautiful architectural design. The roof is round and comes together at the top in a knot that looks like a big gem.
The space after entering was leveled and strong wood was put there blanketing a large area where people can sit and enjoy the pretty flowers in the garden. Olivia is planning on planting herbs but it doesn't hurt for it to look good.
The side with wooden floor has warm glass imbedded underneath for floor heating so those enjoying tea in the garden do not suffer from the cold.
There is another glass house on the other side so it doesn't block the sunrise where Olivia plants unknown crops to test them out before giving them to her father for cultivation in the North. This will help the small folk to not waste time studying them but they get the seeds and instructions on how to plant them successfully.
Olivia hired a few small folks to plant the exotic crops like coffee beans, sugar beans, corn and radishes from abroad to test which can survive in the North under the conditions of a normal glass house.
She wants to test if the information from the merchants is correct before she submit a report to her father about it.
"Olivia, father is calling for you." Robert has gotten bolder and even comes to talk with her for no reason. She goes to her father's office after changing her shoes and washing her hands.
She entered after knocking and two men or more precisely a man and a younger man stood up to greet her.
"This is Lord Medger Cerwyn and his son Cley Cerwyn. When I told them you drew the housing plans for their lands they don't believe me." Ned smiled looking proud.
Olivia greeted politely in return. "These plans were drawn by me I took note of the terrain, the proximity to the white knife river. But it is still just an abstract we can add and remove anything according to your liking." She switched to business mode and quickly explained her reasoning.
Lord Medger started laughing. "I'll be dammed my lord, you have a talented child here." The old man smiled fondly at her.
"Seeing you now we believe you really came up with such complex but easily constructed buildings. The North owes you a debt, but if I may ask why there three first?"
"The Cerwyn family has been close friends with the Starks for centuries, I have a food plan to introduce to the Reed family I need them stable sooner rather than later and the Bear Island is always threatened by the Iron born." Her answer is calm, many children wouldn't remain so calm dealing with big men like them.
"Wait a minute what food plan?" Cerwyn asked the girl but she just smiled.
"It might not succeed so I will keep it to myself for now." She acted shy.
"Father don't embarrass her." Cley steps in making the two parents laughed merrily. She spent some time explaining the obscure details. When the visitors left she smiled and waved them goodbye.
Then she turned to face her father in displeasure. "Please don't let others know I have skills, valuable skills that may cause them to annoy me one day." She said with a serious tone. Ned is stunned.
"You don't want people to know about you?" Most people would want the world to recognize them.
"I will work to see the North, my home become a better place for my fellow North men but I can not trust others with my skills. Think of me as your card to play, it is better when others are not aware of your full strength." She advised.
"Just like the glass houses. I advised against telling them they are produced here because this information would reach the south and they would leak it to the glass maker across the sea just to cut the North back to size." She warned.
"Is it that bad?" Ned frowned. Since when is a child of ten this distrustful?
"No, it is worse. They need us to depend on them so they can sell us rotten food at sky high prices. If we dare to show even an ounce of resistance they will get rid of the Starks and put someone else in charge. Someone like the Bolton's." She spoke firmly. Ned is not stupid he just chooses to not see the truth. But when a 10 name day is this serious as if pleading with him, he has to pay attention.
"We will proceed as you have suggested. I just hate lying to the lords like this." Ned admitted.
"This is because we just need to ensure that our plans are not hindered in anyway. You can open up to them when the North is stronger than now. For the moment lets gather our resources and build our home." She said.
"Alright. No one will know about the source of everything. You have done so much I owe you this much." He greed reluctantly.
"Good. I'm glad." She left.
Ned looked at the letter he had started to write informing his friend and adopted father about the plans he has. He decided to burn it. After giving so much to the North, her only request should be granted. He will hide this for as long as he can.
Days went by slowly as everyone is busy with their own things. The tower is now fully furnished. There is a bedroom and a few other locations where she replace a wall with floor to ceiling windows made from indestructible glass.
The process was done on several bedroom and seating room floors with a moderate temperature. The inside of the tower is more like a luxurious home now than a tower. The many rooms she plans on using mostly for storing her materials.
When the internal design of the tower was finished it looks exquisite. She feels like the 'master' of a tower. Seated on the long couch reading a book. Watching the outside through the floor to ceiling glass window, the place feels like a scene out of a play.
"Lady Olivia, the people you tasked us to retrieve have come." The two maidservants Anna and Chubby Faith had been tasked with bringing sick people who are unable to afford medicine for her.
In the past weeks she has been using the formulas wo make everyday pills that will save many lives in the North. People here hunt in the wild, brave the snow to look for wood to make fires and fish in cold shores. They get sick often and die from minor illnesses that could have been avoided.
