(Bond's P.O.V)

The morning had an unusual stillness, a calm that felt heavy with the weight of what was about to happen.

Outside Stark Industries' secure lab in New York, armed guards patrolled the perimeter, their boots echoing against the concrete.

Inside, the lab was a hive of activity, a warehouse turned 'temple' where the world's first Super Soldier was about to be born.

I moved through the teched-out room, stepping over cables and fussing lab assistants, nodding at saluting soldiers, past an arguing Erskine and Stark, around a Peggy trying to play mediator, before stopping in front of the main man.

Steve sat on a bench in the corner of the lab, his back straight but his hands fidgeting nervously in his lap.

He looked out of place amid the towering machinery and the hum of advanced equipment.

His small frame seemed even smaller in the shadow of the massive Vita Ray Chamber.

I approached him, my footsteps heavy and loud against the floor.

"You ready for this, Rogers?" I asked, my voice quieter than usual.

He looked up, his blue eyes meeting mine. There was nervousness there, but also an unyielding resolve. "I am, sir. Just... hoping I don't let anyone down."

I crouched so we were eye level, taking a moment to study him. He didn't flinch under my gaze.

"Listen to me," I said firmly."You've already proven more than anyone could've asked for. This is just the next step. All you have to do is keep being you."

The tension in his shoulders eased slightly, and he managed a faint smile. "Thank you, sir."

I stood and clapped a hand on his shoulder, squeezing it once before turning toward the lab.

Stark and Erskine were deep in preparations, their voices overlapping as they ran through a final checklist.

Peggy was beckoning me over, while she went and handled the dignitaries' arrival.

I nodded and joined the two arguing geniuses at the console, my eyes scanning the intricate web of switches and dials.

"Everything set?" I asked Stark.

"Ah Bond! Good thing you're here. Please tell Erskine that everything is as set as it'll ever be." he replied, though the usual swagger in his tone was absent.

Even Stark understood the gravity of what we were about to do. We'd put a lot of time and effort into this, if it failed...Project Rebirth would be shut down.

Erskine glanced up from his notes, his expression thoughtful. "James, could you help me realign this cord?" he requested, the two of us moving around the Vita ray pod.

While following his instructions, he continued, "There is still time you know. You could claim this moment for yourself."

I didn't hesitate nor look up. "We've been through this, Doc. Steve's the better fit."

Erskine sighed but pressed on. "Perhaps for now. But what about the future? What happens when another Hitler or Red Skull emerges? Who will protect the world then?"

I paused, meeting his gaze head-on. "God will create another Erskine. Another Steve Rogers. Good always rises to meet Bad."

His lips quirked into a sad smile, one that didn't reach his eyes.

"God..." he murmured. "Such a paradox. He can be all-powerful but not all-good, or all-good but not all-powerful. That is why I decided to rewrite the rules. To create our own protector. Our own god dedicated to the safety of this world."

I frowned, uncomfortable with the turn of the conversation, but he wasn't finished.

"Steve Rogers is as close to 'all-good' as anyone could be. But he is not all-powerful. You, James... you could be. You have no idea of the potential you carry." His eyes seemed to light up in a strange light, twinkling behind the glasses.

"And that potential is vital to the continued existence of the world. God, if He exists, has shown us one thing: He is not all-good." He finished.

The words lingered in the air, unsettling and challenging. But my mind was made up.

"Steve's the right man for this time," I said. "That's all there is to it."

Erskine nodded, though the disappointment was clear in his eyes. Without another word, he turned away, and I helped Stark with the final checks.

Colonel Phillips and a group of officials, entered the lab just as the preparations were concluding, Peggy on Phillip's side.

His presence commanded the room, his voice gruff but steady as he addressed everyone. "Ladies and gentlemen, I don't say this often, so listen up. What we're doing here today is nothing short of revolutionary. You've all played a part in something that could change the course of this war—and history itself. For that, you have my thanks, and the thanks of every man, woman, and child who believes in freedom. Now let's make history."

The applause was brief but genuine. I glanced at Steve as Phillips spoke, noting the way he straightened his back, the determination in his eyes. He was ready.

Steve stepped into the Vita Ray Chamber, his slight frame dwarfed by the harness.

For a moment, I couldn't help but think about how fragile he looked.

Stark adjusted the controls, his hands steady despite the tension in the room.

"How much does he weigh?" I asked Stark.

"110 pounds," he replied without looking up.

Fifty kilos. Barely more than a child. I pushed the thought aside as the machinery whirred to life.

"And now it begins." Erskine declared, turning a dial to initiate the serum infusion.

A blue liquid flowed into the pod just as it lit up, pulsing with Vita Rays- a yellow light that filled the chamber.

Steve's screams tore through the lab, raw and unrelenting. Peggy surged forward, her face pale with panic.

"Stop it!" she shouted. "You're killing him!"

I stepped in her path, my voice sharp but controlled. "Look at his face, Carter."

She hesitated, her gaze shifting to Steve through the chamber's glass. Despite the pain contorting his features, his eyes remained steadfast, his jaw clenched with determination. He wasn't giving up.

The screams subsided, and the room fell silent as the chamber powered down. For a moment, no one moved. Then the door to the Vita Ray Chamber hissed open.

Gasps of shock and disbelief filled the room.

The transformation was undeniable. Even I was left stunned.

Steve Rogers stepped out taller, broader, his physique like something out of myth. While we were the same height, his new muscles were bigger than mine.

I was a little jealous which was the opposite of Peggy who seemed enamored by his pecs, even sneaking a quick tap in.

Steve flexed his hands, his eyes wide with awe.

"How do you feel?" Erskine asked, breaking the silence.

"Like I can do this all day doc." he replied, a grin breaking across his face.

The celebration was cut short by the sound of gunfire.

Two sharp cracks echoed through the lab, followed by chaos.

"Down!" I tackled Stark and Erskine to to the floor amidst the panicking room.

My instincts kicked in immediately, scanning the room. Two Hydra assassins bolted for the exit, one carrying a briefcase—the completed vials of the Super Soldier Serum.

"Erskine!" Peggy screamed, rushing to his side.

Steve moved instinctively, tackling one of the assassins. With a single punch, he sent the man crashing into the wall.

The sickening snap of the assassin's neck silenced the room. Steve froze, staring at the lifeless body in shock.

I didn't have time to comfort him. The second assassin was already out the door.

"Watch them!" I told Peggy, removed my white coat to reveal my sniper rifle and sprinted after him, my boots pounding against the concrete.

He weaved through the crowded streets outside, shoving bystanders out of his path.

I cut down an alley, lept off a dumpster to grab a metal railing and scale a tall building next to the lab.

From the rooftop, I searched for the assassin and lined up my shot, following him on the scope.

Just as he was about to cross the street, the crack of my rifle echoed as the bullet found its mark, tearing through his thigh.

He collapsed with a cry, the briefcase tumbling from his grasp.

By the time I reached him, he was crawling away, leaving a trail of blood. I pressed my boot down on his wounded leg, eliciting a scream.

"Who sent you?" I demanded.

The assassin turned around and spat through gritted teeth, "Hail Hydra."

His jaw clenched to bite on what was probably a cyanide pill, but I didn't give him the chance.

One bullet to the forehead ended it.

I turned my attention to the briefcase at my feet, its contents spilling out.

Of the Two vials inside—one had shattered, the other intact.

I slipped the unbroken vial into my pocket as Steve sprinted toward me, his chest heaving.

"You killed him?" he asked, his voice shaky.

"Yes," I replied, watching his reaction.

"Good," Steve said, his tone cold. "The bastards killed Erskine."

The words hit hard. He...Erskine was dead? But I thought I pushed him down from the line of fire.

Shite. It was the first shot that got him...wasn't it.

I handed Steve the briefcase without another word and ran back to the lab, my mind racing.

When I arrived, the sight of Peggy sobbing over Erskine's lifeless body stopped me in my tracks.

Stark stood nearby, his usual confidence replaced by quiet grief.

I approached slowly, kneeling beside Erskine. Gently, I lifted the sheet covering him. His face was calm, almost serene. A patch of blood covered his chest. Right where his heart was.

"No..."

I'd lost people before but it never got easier. And Erskine, despite not knowing him for long had become a fixture in my life.

His loss hit me harder than expected.

The memories came rushing out—our conversations about science, morality, life, and death. I thought of the last thing he said to me that morning, and my hand curled around the vial in my pocket.

"I'll protect the world," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "Even if I have to do God's work for Him."

It was a silent promise to a great man I deeply admired and respected: Whatever it took, I would ensure that Erskine's dream didn't die with him.

Even if that meant going against my own ideals. Even if it meant rejecting mortality to become ALL-POWERFUL.
