Chapter 2
“Waaah.”
“This kid really… is wailing in a rather staged way.”
“Crying without a single tear, huh?”
I was experiencing reincarnation in another world for the first time in my life.
The first reincarnation of my life! It sounds like a bizarre phrase, but what can I do? It’s my first time reincarnating.
I don’t know what kind of world this is, but anyway, when I regained consciousness, I was just out of my new mother’s womb.
Since I was born, it was only proper to let out a cry.
“What shall we name him?”
“Well, I have something in mind. Rai. From today onward, you are Rai! Hahahahaha!”
So it seems my name is Rai.
I later found out that my new family’s surname was Otte.
In this world, the culture adopts a Western-style of placing the surname at the end, so my full name turned out to be Rai Otte.
As I passed through infancy, I got a grasp of this world.
To put it simply, it’s an ordinary world where mana exists.
I still don’t know the details.
The reason for this is that I was born in a remote countryside area.
Unlike the large cities thriving with magical advancements, this is an agriculture-focused rural village.
Still, some of this village also enjoys the benefits of magic.
To be precise, most of the villagers know how to use magic.
Not anything grand, just basic stuff like starting a small fire or creating water for farming.
They only used very basic life magic.
It seemed like a world where the level of magic had been equalized.
Even the passing old man could use some magic.
I realized the absurdity of this world when I turned seven.
“Where are those boys and girls going?”
It was early dawn on the first day of the new year.
For some reason, I woke up early and saw a group of boys and girls boarding a cart heading somewhere.
“Waking up early, Rai? Those boys and girls are going to a nearby city.”
“Why?”
“When you turn ten, you can take the attribute constitution test. You can do it when you turn ten too, Rai.”
“Attribute constitution?”
People in this world are said to be born with different magical attribute constitutions.
Some have fire attributes, some have light attributes, and others may have unique attributes like smell or mirror attributes.
There are many types of attributes, and they are quite detailed.
Usually, attributes that can encompass many characteristics are favored.
Higher attributes can use magic from lower attributes, but lower attributes cannot use magic from higher ones.
For example, a wizard with a wind attribute can use magic related to the smell attribute, but someone with a smell attribute can only use smell attribute magic.
And within that, the smell attribute can cast all magic related to all smells, but someone with a durian smell attribute (which actually exists) can only use magic related to the durian smell. It goes something like that.
Most people tend to have lower attribute constitutions with less versatility,
while those with higher attributes are fewer in number.
So those with lower attribute constitutions essentially live as ordinary people.
They might just be people who can cast magic that makes a durian smell, you know.
That’s why most villagers use one or two types of magic.
“There’s another indicator that determines talent aside from the attribute constitution. It’s called attribute grade.”
And there’s also one more aspect: attribute grade.
This goes from F to S grade, similar to how affinity for the attribute works.
The closer to S, the higher talent you have for that attribute.
Of course, no matter how much someone has an S grade, if they have a durian smell constitution, they’d just be a human who can create an enormous durian smell.
In conclusion, both the attribute constitution and grade need to be moderately high to become a good wizard.
Perhaps that’s why, even though everyone is born with magical constitutions, it’s rare to find formal wizards in this world.
“What was mom’s attribute?”
“Mom has a clone attribute at E grade. She can create clones.”
“Clones??”
She can perform the clone technique?
What? Isn’t that super cheating?
Even if she can’t be a wizard, she could have been useful as an assassin or something.
“Hoho. It’s really not that impressive. Want to see?”
Soon, a blurred version of mom was created.
“With my grade, this is all I can do, so it’s hard to utilize effectively. Occasionally, there are wizards with S grade clone attributes that take on special jobs, but even then, it doesn’t provide much help.”
“Why? If you had a clone, it could do everything for you.”
“Sadly, that’s impossible. No matter how perfect the clone looks, it ultimately remains an ‘illusion’. Now, watch.”
Mom’s clone approached me with open arms as if to hug me.
Hooosh—
Yet it couldn’t hug me and passed right through my body.
“Magic from the illusion attribute can’t affect reality in this way. This holds true even if the grade is higher. Maybe it can dance, though.”
Wouldn’t it be quite popular if multiple clones performed a dance?
Mom chuckled as she said that.
I thought it was an amazing magic, but it seems all magic from the ‘illusion’ attribute is like this.
If one possessed a higher illusion attribute, they could probably manifest sensations of touch even with their clones.
But that’s too complicated, and few wizards are capable of such feats. Plus, it’s meaningless.
It’s far easier to just bring in someone with a durian smell attribute than to create a durian smell illusion!
That’s why the illusion attribute is regarded as distinct from light attributes.
Literally, illusion magic is just that—‘illusion’.
It’s said to be the attribute considered the least valuable among them all.
“Hmm. Then I won’t choose the illusion attribute.”
“Alright, then. Our son must have been born with an amazing constitution! Hoho, hohoho…”
Hohohoho…
For some reason, that time, Mom’s laughter felt a bit awkward.
She took my hand and led me back inside for breakfast.
It wasn’t until three years later that I realized she had been lying.
The year I finally turned ten.
On the day of the new year when I was going to take the attribute constitution test,
I overheard it.
“Hey, wake up! How could both your parents have flour attributes, and you have a fire attribute? Attribute constitution is mostly hereditary!”
“Yeah. Grass attribute is the best. Grass attributes aren’t bad, of course. It’s just that getting the upper tier attributes is hard.”
“But I want a fire attribute—! I want to burn everything down! Living by raising plants doesn’t suit me—!”
They were talking about how the attribute constitution tends to follow the parents.
Of course, the grade or superior and inferior attributes don’t necessarily pass down.
After all, acquiring good attribute constitutions or grades depends a lot on luck, right?
Only the series is somewhat determined.
But that was the case for ordinary people with typical attribute constitutions.
I mean, even the child of parents with durian smell attributes could end up with a wind attribute, right?
In fact, wind is a good attribute!
But my mom has an illusion attribute!
If Dad had a different attribute, I could take a gamble on having a mix.
But I heard that Dad also had an illusion attribute just the night before.
No wonder when we set off early this morning, my parents hugged me with sympathetic looks.
What sort of rule is this?!
“Ha… Damn… Me, me with an illusion attribute…!”
And so, I arrived in the nearby city with a very gloomy feeling.
While everyone else was grinning to see what attribute they would get, I couldn’t laugh at all.
No matter how well it turns out, I am still just a useless illusion…
“Next. Leah Oillern, please come up.”
“Okay!”
It was finally my turn.
Leah, who was right before me, stepped onto the altar and placed her hand on the crystal ball.
Once she puts her hand there, light will shine from the crystal ball, revealing her attribute constitution and grade.
“Then we’ll begin.”
Once the magician in charge of the altar infused mana into the crystal ball, light started to rise from deep within.
And that light gradually expanded and spread around.
“This light is… A-grade talent…!”
The wondrously shining crystal ball meant that Leah’s talent was at least A-grade.
Regardless of the attribute constitution, the higher the grade, the stronger the light would be emitted from the crystal ball.
Paaaaaah—
With an incredible light, Leah’s attribute appeared.
[Electricity (A)]
“W-Wow…!”
“If it’s electricity… that’s the top-tier attribute! Furthermore, it’s A-grade…!”
“W-Wow, I’m so jealous of Leah…”
Her attribute was Electricity (A).
No doubt, an electric constitution positioned at the top of the electric series.
This meant that she could learn all types of magic related to electricity, and also that she possessed A-grade talent.
All the altar attendants were taken aback, and the children who had come with me were all sending looks of envy towards her.
“Wow, this is… truly amazing talent. Congratulations, Leah.”
“Th-Thank you!”
Leah stepped off the altar happily.
She was lighter on her feet than anyone who had been tested so far.
Rumors would surely spread that she would be picked up by the Electricity Tower in no time.
“Next, Rai Otte?”
“…It’s not Raiot, it’s Rai Otte.”
“Right. So, Rai. Uh, it’s your turn.”
“…Yes.”
And now, it was my turn, which felt so burdensome.
I stepped past the cheerful Leah and approached the altar.
Yeah. They say heredity applies most of the time, but there are low chances it doesn’t, right?
Moreover, I’m a reincarnated individual from another world. Surely, I must have some special advantage, right?
“Place your hand here and stay still.”
As my turn arrived, I was moving my hand towards the crystal ball with positive thoughts running through my mind.
And for some reason, I felt something good.
It felt like a good attribute was about to appear.
“Then we’ll begin.”
The magician infused mana into the crystal ball.
Light began rising slowly, and like with Leah, a massive light started to overflow from the crystal ball.
The difference was that the size of this light was on an entirely different level compared to Leah’s.
Paaaah—
“This, this is… No way!!”
“S, S-grade talent…!”
I could hear the astonished voices of the altar attendants.
The light was bright enough that it nearly blinded me.
Yeah, this is it! I knew there would be something…!
“W-Wow… Rai is S-grade?!”
“Unbelievable… I’m so jealous.”
From below the altar, I could hear my companions’ envious voices.
As the dazzling light slowly diminished, my attribute began to show on the crystal ball.
“Th-This is…!”
“O-Oooh…?!”
With trembling hands, I checked the result of my attribute test.
