Isekai Adventure in the Dimensional Cube

Chapter 14: 014 The Returning Elder

Throughout history, any person who has received grace can possess, at most, three magic abilities, but no less than one.

This is common knowledge to everyone.

Even the elves, who are known as the magic race, after receiving grace, also have only three magic slots available for them (her) to awaken magic and absolutely will not have a fourth spell slot.

Of course, having only three magics to awaken does not mean that one can only use three magics.

Some people, because their awakened magic is quite special, are able to undergo multiple transformations, or have effects that involve multiple stages, and thus ultimately can use more than just three magics.

Take the Loki family, for instance, here there are two members who belong to this type.

One has awakened a magic that allows for multiple transformations; the effect varies depending on the amount chanted, and thus one magic can be used as three. With three magics, they can utilize nine variations, equivalent to possessing nine magics.

The other has awakened an elven-specific magic, Summoning Magic, which can summon the magic used by their fellow tribespeople. In theory, that person, with just this one magic, can use all elf magics, far exceeding the number any Magic Guide could hold.

Reiger's awakened magic numbers only one.

However, this singular magic showed possibilities and breadth of effect that were even greater than those of the aforementioned two individuals.

A magic that can cast any spell from one's own memory?

Doesn't that mean, as long as Reiger has memorized enough spells, he can use as many magics as he wants?

Such magic, isn't it outrageously unbelievable?

But, this magic, as unbelievable as it is, also has its limitations.

"Your magic," Loki said, "as far as we can tell, has two confirmed conditions for use."

Loki held up two fingers to Reiger.

"First: You can only cast spells that you remember. If you don't remember a spell, you cannot use it."

"Second: Even if it's a spell you remember, if you haven't personally verified its effects, you still cannot use it."

"In other words, if you want to use someone else's magic, you must witness them casting it in front of your eyes, and you yourself must recall every single detail of the casting process, conditions, effects, and power, without omission."

This is the limitation of the "Omniscient One."

It is also for this reason that Reiger actually doesn't know how to use even a single magic at the moment, because, since his arrival in this world, he has not seen any magic cast before his very eyes.

Even if magic were cast before his eyes, Reiger would have to remember the details of its casting and conditions.

That's why, even though he has seen the Healing Magic cast by a Priest that had helped him in his original world, he couldn't use the "Omniscient One" to cast that magic. The Priest's magic was chanted in mystical runes that Reiger had never encountered, and the chanting process wasn't clear, so he didn't recall the details clearly enough.

Therefore, Reiger still couldn't cast even a single magic at present.

Loki knew about this and stroked his chin.

"This problem isn't too difficult to solve," Loki said: "There are many in our family who can use magic. As long as those kids seriously cast a spell in front of you and even teach you their magic, with your memory, you should be able to cast several kinds of magic in no time, right?"

This seemingly carefree chief god had long recognized Reiger's extraordinary talent for memory, surprising Reiger himself.

However, Loki's suggestion was very helpful to Reiger.

Given the conditions for using the "Omniscient One," there was nothing more convenient than having someone personally teach Reiger their magic in order to activate its effect.

"Let's do this," Loki thought for a moment and said to Reiger: "After the expedition members return, I'll find someone skilled to teach you magic, how about that?"

"An expedition?" Reiger's eyebrow twitched slightly.

"That's right," Loki said with a giggle: "Most of our kids are not at home right now but in the underground city."

The underground city, as the largest secret realm in the world, still has many areas unexplored today.

The underground maze, with its countless floors, gets larger the deeper one goes and becomes further from the surface.

This situation naturally leads to some adventurers struggling on the front lines of the underground city not being able to travel easily between Orario and the underground city.

It's said that traveling from the 1st to the 50th floor just in transit would take several days, and a round trip easily exceeds a week.

Thus, the concept of an expedition was born.

The so-called expedition, as the name implies, means a large family of adventurers venturing deep into the underground city to battle, like an army would.

They go to floors that regular adventurers can't easily reach, fight extremely powerful monsters there, step into floors never before reached by anyone, explore the unknown, and develop uncharted areas.

The Loki family is one of the strongest families in Orario and the most authentic exploration family. The family's focus is on conquering the underground city and developing unexplored areas for profit or fame.

During the two days since Reiger joined the Loki family, the family's main combat personnel happened to be on an expedition to the underground city, leaving only a small portion of the ground staff.

In other words, when Reiger joined the Loki family, the true powerhouses and geniuses of the family were actually battling in the Underground Demon Cave, far below the surface, completely out of reach for the current Reiger, who was engaging in a terrifying struggle against fearsome monsters.

At this thought, Reiger's heartbeat quickened slightly, and his eyes shone brightly.

"Hey, hey, hey, what do you think you're doing?" Loki said in quick succession, "You're just a Lv.1 rookie. It's already pretty good that you can get by in the upper levels, so don't even think about joining an expedition. That's not something you can be part of right now!"

"Is that so?" Reiger looked at Loki.

The corner of Loki's mouth twitched.

Did this kid really have his mind set on joining an expedition?

After only two days of benefiting from Megumi's care, and having been an ordinary person before that, he dared to contemplate an expedition. Wasn't there something wrong with this kid?

In our clan, why is it always these problematic children?

I'm seriously going to worry myself to death!

"The people who can join an expedition have to be at least Lv.2 specialist talents, like those who can use Healing Magic," Loki said, covering her face. She sighed and added earnestly, "Even if you could learn other people's Magic and become a specialist talent, Finn wouldn't allow you to join an expedition if you're not at least Lv.2, so you'd better give up any dangerous ideas you have right now."

Hearing this, Reiger stared intently at Loki, and after confirming that Loki would not relent on this point, he withdrew his gaze with some regret.

"Alright," Reiger said reluctantly, "then I'll wait until Lv.2."

Loki couldn't help but roll her eyes at Reiger and sighed to herself again.

She had this nagging feeling that her life from now on would be filled with unrest because of this kid's antics.

"Calculating the time, the expedition team should be coming back soon," Loki said, changing the subject. "Just wait another couple of days."

"Got it," Reiger nodded.

Only then did Loki reveal a broad smile, which looked a bit like she was up to no good.

"I wonder what expression Finn and the others will have when they come back and find out our clan has gained such a freakishly talented monster," Loki mused.

"Especially Ais, Bert, Theone, and Theona, they're probably going to be quite shaken by the kid's growth rate, right?"

"Thinking about it, I'm actually quite looking forward to it," she chuckled to herself.

The Norse goddess of mischief was secretly laughing in the divine chamber, much like a child getting ready to enjoy the spectacle.

And the day that this irreverent main deity was looking forward to arrived even faster than she expected.

...

The next day.

At the break of dawn when the sky was still dim, Reiger woke up early, just as he had the day before.

He swiftly washed up, finished his morning cleaning routine in five minutes, and then prepared to dress in his armor and clothes, ready to head to the underground city.

Today, Reiger planned to spend the entire day exploring the underground city, not wasting any more time and seeing if he could delve deeper than before.

His ability scores had grown following the previous day's update, with both "Dexterity" and "Agility" reaching the E rank. According to the safety guidelines, he was now fully capable of exploring as far as the 8th level.

But of course, Reiger was not content with adhering to those so-called safety guidelines.

Thus, his plan for today was to aim for the 10th level or even venture into deeper floors.

For this reason, Reiger had taken special care of his weapons with the items he had bought before bed last night, pumping himself up, ready to stir things up.

The thought of entering deeper levels than yesterday's 7th level made Reiger feel a slight thrill of excitement.

"I heard that starting from the 10th level, there will appear large species that are much bigger in size than the typical monsters, like Minotaurs, for example."

"Minotaurs, huh?"

"I wonder how strong they are?"

Reiger was full of anticipation.

However, just as Reiger was preparing to set out with both his primary and secondary weapons, suddenly, within the House of Twilight, a voice rang out.

"The Captain is back!"

"Everyone has returned!"

"The expedition members are back———!"

This exuberant shouting broke the early morning stillness, throwing the entire House of Twilight into an uproar.

Sounds of hurried footsteps emerged frequently, and one after another, doors were opening all around, as if signaling to everyone that the occupants of the House of Twilight were rushing outside.

"They're back?"

Reiger too was taken aback for a moment before he stood up.

Visions of characters mentioned in the original story flashed through his mind, and narrowing his eyes, Reiger took his weapons and left his room, heading towards the main entrance of the House of Twilight.
