Chapter 95: 95 Complete
Coexist peacefully and divide the world into three parts? That's impossible!
Altair was only planning to have more soldiers come from Aragane Station.
Due to the rapid increase in population at Aragane Station, the workforce expanded quickly, and the number of soldiers began to grow as well. During peacetime, Altair assigned these soldiers to chop wood, dig mines, and build new outer walls. Although the Kabane were no longer a threat to the samurai, they still posed a danger to ordinary people. Altair hadn't yet decided to inject all the civilians with the antidote.
Altair had the army build a relatively simple outer wall first, then stationed samurai to patrol it. The newly arrived civilians lived inside the outer wall.
Over the month, Altair had Kenshou select those among the civilians who could be cannon fodder and trained them with the samurai, quickly expanding the army to over 10,000. Once the month-long training was complete, Altair led his forces straight to Kongoukaku.
Under the cover of darkness, Altair sneaked onto the southern gate wall of Kongoukaku station and brazenly assassinated all the samurai stationed there.
Without anyone realizing it, Altair lowered the drawbridge, allowing the Kokujou and the Koutetsujou to enter the station. Then, the samurai led the cannon fodder troops to launch an attack on the city.
The third son who had taken over Kongoukaku never expected that the city gate would be breached in the middle of the night. He was still thinking about how to negotiate with the second son when the southern gate was already broken through.
He was stunned as he crawled out of bed, hastily calling for resistance. But unfortunately, he couldn't gather enough people. The samurai were panicking, and only a handful of his bodyguards managed to respond. However, these few people were no match for the large army that Altair had brought with him.
As Altair led the attack, sneakily taking out key targets, Kongoukaku fell overnight. When the terrified civilians opened their doors the next morning, they saw that the city walls were already draped with different flags.
The walls of Kongoukaku, once displaying the crest of the Shogun, were now replaced with Altair's emblem. Altair's insignia was, of course, the Emblem of the Hestia Familia, representing Hestia's flame entwined around Altair's sword.
The sudden change in banners made the residents of Kongoukaku realize that the city no longer belonged to the Shogun. Or rather, the Shogun had been replaced.
To the common people, it didn't make much difference who the Shogun was. It wasn't something they could control, and it didn't directly impact their lives.
Oh, wait, maybe it did matter after all... whether the new Shogun's policies would make their lives more difficult was something to worry about.
Having occupied Kongoukaku, Altair tasked Kenshou with controlling the city. Kenshou, excited to manage such a large city for the first time, followed Altair's orders to summon all the nobles and demand that they hand over their wealth. Yes, just hand it over.
Altair planned to reshuffle the nobility, after all. Since he was going to become the new Shogun, his people needed to be elevated to the new noble class. As for the old nobility, they had two choices; hand over their wealth and survive, or be executed, after which their wealth would be taken anyway.
The nobles, faced with Altair's robbery-like demands, had no choice but to obediently hand over their assets. However, at this point, money wasn't of much use. Altair wasn't after currency but valuable resources. In this post-apocalyptic world, resources were far more important. Of course, any useless money was confiscated too, to prevent the nobles from ever staging a comeback.
It took Kenshou a whole week just to register all the nobles and confiscate their possessions.
During that time, Altair set off from Kongoukaku, heading north toward Hokkaido.
With the third son captured, only the second son remained, and Altair intended to deal with him to unite all of Hinomoto.
Hokkaido had relatively fewer Kabane. Compared to the southern regions, the station walls in Hokkaido were lower. The area was separated from the main island by a strait, which, though not very large, was an excellent natural barrier against the Kabane.
As a result, the defense forces in Hokkaido weren't as formidable as on the main island.
But Altair didn't care about the strength of the defenses. To him, they were meaningless.
After lowering his presence, Altair infiltrated Hokkaido and gathered intelligence on the situation there.
In the original anime plot, Hokkaido wasn't mentioned much, so Altair wasn't familiar with it. He needed to understand the situation first, at least to identify who the second son was.
Luckily, the people in this era have a certain habit... leaders always reside in the highest place. So, Altair simply had to look for the tallest building!
Sure enough, this method worked. Altair found the second son in the highest room of the tallest building.
The second son was in the middle of a meeting with his subordinates, discussing how to deal with Altair. The second son had learned that Altair had taken Kongoukaku and raised his own family crest. This news had shocked him.
For days, the second son and his advisors had been debating how to handle the situation. Kongoukaku, with its walls dozens of meters high, seemed impenetrable without opening the gates.
During their discussion, Altair appeared, having quietly entered the room. He sat there for a while, listening to their argument before finally standing up and making his move. With a swift and open strike, he decapitated the second son, just as he had done to the Shogun before.
With the second son's death, Hokkaido was thrown into chaos.
Altair used the radio to notify Kenshou in Kongoukaku, instructing him to bring reinforcements. Once Kenshou arrived, Altair personally opened the gates to let the Kokujou into the station.
A week later, Hokkaido had fallen, and Altair now controlled all of the main island and Hokkaido, ruling from Aragane Station. Altair had conquered 70% of Hinomoto. The remaining areas, Kyushu and Shikoku, were just a matter of time. He had achieved his goal of dominating Hinomoto.
After conquering Hinomoto, Altair began sending the samurai to hunt Kabane everywhere, using the Kabane to mass-produce the antidote and deploying samurai across Hinomoto to kill Kabane.
This process took three months. Kabane along the railway lines were easily captured and killed, but some remained hidden deep in the mountains. It wasn't until three months later that a new system window finally appeared before Altair.
His mission was complete.
