Chapter 140: Chapter 140: Presenting a Gift
A few days later, all the conscripted workers for the corvée labor had arrived, and the repair work on the Gu Chuan Dam officially entered its most intensive phase.
However, for Lin Xiao and Sun Yigao, who were stationed there, the situation had become somewhat boring. Although the number of workers had increased, the larger workforce meant more frequent rotations, allowing everyone more rest time.
Moreover, with Governor Tong's strict enforcement of safety regulations, despite the increased number of workers, the number of daily accidents hadn't risen much. Lin Xiao and Sun Yigao only had to save a few dozen people a day.
As a result, most of the time, they were idle. Sun Yigao spent his time reading books, while Lin Xiao monitored the dam with his divine sense while experimenting with his Item Synthesizer to see if he could create some new things.
After receiving the letter from Qin Jianghe, Lin Xiao realized how inconvenient it was to transmit messages in ancient times. Sending information required someone to travel long distances, and if something happened to the messenger or the letter was destroyed, communication would be lost. This was a significant flaw.
He wondered if he could create something more convenient. While flipping through the "Basic Talisman Crafting Manual," he noticed a basic talisman called the "Sound Transmission Talisman." However, this talisman couldn't fly to the recipient on its own and still had to be physically delivered.
So, he thought, what if he combined the Sound Transmission Talisman with a teleportation talisman in the Item Synthesizer? What would happen?
With that thought, he proceeded to do just that. As expected, the Item Synthesizer produced a "Positioning Sound Transmission Talisman."
He immediately put it in his private storage for appraisal. The Positioning Sound Transmission Talisman worked by having the user inject their spiritual power into it to record their location. The person needing to send a message would then input their message into the talisman, with a time limit of no more than fifteen minutes. The talisman would then automatically teleport to the location of the person whose spiritual power was recorded.
After confirming that this could be synthesized, Lin Xiao made twenty more.
He didn't make too many for two reasons: first, he had only made twenty Sound Transmission Talismans before leaving; second, the teleportation talismans were not made by him but purchased from the system store. The "Positioning Talisman" was more advanced and not yet something he had learned to craft himself.
Lastly, there weren't many places that needed these Positioning Sound Transmission Talismans at the moment, so he wasn't in a hurry to mass-produce them. Once the work at the dam was done, he could go back and make more if necessary.
For now, he gave Sun Yigao ten of them, as he would be leaving in two days to take the Academy Examination.
Thus, Lin Xiao spent his days studying various things, occasionally saving people. He noticed that his divine sense seemed to be growing stronger, likely due to constantly monitoring the surroundings.
During this time, Lin Xiao created more than just the Positioning Sound Transmission Talisman. He made various items, many of which weren't immediately useful but might come in handy later. He stored these miscellaneous items in his private storage.
He also tossed the farming tools he had purchased earlier into the Item Synthesizer, along with some design modifications he had drawn. For example, he upgraded the plows to curved-beam plows.
After modifying these tools, he looked at the freshly synthesized "spiritual farming tools" in his private storage, imagining the joy on his father's face when he saw them. He could almost see the wrinkles of happiness.
Fortunately, his father's skin, which had become dark and rough from years of sun exposure, had improved slightly since he began cultivating.
Time flew by, and a month passed unnoticed. With so many workers conscripted, the repair work on the Gu Chuan Dam was nearing completion. Most of the dangerous work was done, and the workers were now finishing up less risky tasks.
Having gone a whole day without needing to intervene, Lin Xiao planned to stay one or two more days before returning to Shou Shui Village.
The next morning, the first batch of conscripted workers at the Gu Chuan Dam began packing up their bedding. Watching the tired but joyful faces of the workers, who were happy to be returning home in one piece, Lin Xiao felt a deep sense of satisfaction.
Sun Yigao had left the dam ten days earlier to prepare for his next exam, leaving Lin Xiao alone for those ten days. Although he kept himself busy with the Item Synthesizer, he still found it somewhat boring.
Now, those dull days were finally coming to an end. The Gu Yue River, stabilized by the dam, seemed to celebrate the workers' success by gradually calming down in recent days. Though still turbulent, the water level was lower than before.
Feeling restless, Lin Xiao stood up and stretched. As he leisurely observed the river he had watched for a month, his divine sense detected a figure falling from the edge of the dam.
Without thinking, Lin Xiao used his Cloud-Stepping Technique to fly over and catch the person. When he caught the person, he realized they were dressed in long robes, entirely different from the short, sweaty shirts or bare chests of the workers.
The person appeared to be around forty years old, with slightly sagging but refined and gentle features, dressed neatly like a scholar. Clearly, this person was not one of the conscripted workers.
Moreover, the person was clutching a large bundle, the contents of which were unknown. Though Lin Xiao could sense the person's fear from the fall, he carefully brought them to the riverbank.
After setting the person down and preparing to leave, Lin Xiao heard the man bow deeply and speak in a steady yet slightly fearful and respectful voice:
"I am Xue Chengfeng, humble advisor to Tong Shuzheng, the governor of Liaoju Prefecture. I have come on his behalf to express our deepest gratitude for the immortal's protection over these many days! Governor Tong deeply understands that you wish to remain anonymous. However, seeing the project nearing completion, he feels that leaving without expressing his gratitude would be a dereliction of his duty as a governor. Though he wished to come in person, I implored him to allow me to come in his stead, as it is not appropriate for someone of his position. Please, accept this small token of his appreciation."
