Chapter 23 Believing in Science_1
Was it an illusion?
Liu Nanwei wasn't sure, but the next second, the finger moved again.
Moreover, the patient's chest began to rise and fall. He was breathing!
Liu Nanwei was completely dumbfounded. "He's alive."
Li Shouzhong's eyes bulged as he stared intently at the patient. The young man opened his eyes, his gaze utterly blank.
At that moment, horror swept through Li Shouzhong's heart like a tidal wave.
He's really alive! How is this possible!?
「Elsewhere.」
Zhou Feng scoffed, "Doctor Liu, stop joking. The man is gone. Even Director Li was helpless."
"It's true!" Liu Nanwei stomped her foot in frustration.
She knelt on the ground and gently patted the patient's face. "Young man, can you hear me?"
With his back to the patient, Zhou Feng was dismissive. "If that kid Xu can bring someone back from the dead, I'll kneel on the spot and call him grandpa!"
The Director of the School Health Center. An ignoramus, fooling people in a matter of life and death. This is just career suicide!
Zhou Feng had already decided how he was going to file a harsh complaint against Xu Lai.
Just as he was congratulating himself on his cunning, he saw the shocked expressions on the surrounding students' faces and heard them gasp in unison, as if they had just witnessed something incredible.
He turned around in confusion, only to see the patient—who just a moment ago had been in cardiac arrest with no signs of breathing—not only open his eyes but sit up on his own.
Stunned, Zhou Feng leaped back. "What's going on? Has he come back from the dead?"
"You're a doctor! Please, believe in science," Li Shouzhong, overwhelmed with excitement, rebuked Zhou Feng. "Show some respect for the patient and for the medical profession!"
...
When was I disrespectful? Xu Lai is the one being disrespectful! Zhou Feng was completely bewildered.
"A miracle. This is a medical miracle," Li Shouzhong said, clicking his tongue in amazement as he continuously examined the patient.
A patient who couldn't be revived after nearly half an hour of cardiopulmonary resuscitation recovered after a gentle touch from Xu Lai's finger.
What principle was behind this? Li Shouzhong wished he could find Xu Lai immediately and discuss it for three days and nights.
He grabbed Zhou Feng's arm. "What's your director's mobile number? Tell me, quickly!"
Seeing the man rumored to be the 'Light of Xinglin', known for his calm demeanor, now staring at him with bloodshot eyes, Zhou Feng was terrified and backed away. "I don't know."
"I don't have it saved either," Liu Nanwei added, quickly shaking her head.
"Then I'll just have to discuss it with him tomorrow," Li Shouzhong sighed with deep regret.
The rest was simple.
The ambulance arrived late, delayed by a traffic jam that had even blocked the emergency vehicle lane with private cars.
"Alright, alright, everyone disperse," Liu Nanwei shouted at the students, her expression cold.
As the crowd broke up, they chattered excitedly.
"I can't believe there's such a master at the health center."
"I knew it all along! The new director is a miracle doctor!"
"I'm not gonna lie, he's the one who gave me a band-aid yesterday at the health center. I looked this morning—hey, the wound's completely healed! Isn't that amazing?"
"Amazing! But I thought you just had a little scrape that bled a bit?"
"..."
But the story of what had just happened spread like wildfire across the student forum, causing a huge sensation.
Of course, none of this had anything to do with Xu Lai.
When he arrived at the kindergarten, he found his daughter sitting in Ruan Tang's car. His wife was holding the steering wheel, her brow slightly furrowed as she stared off into space.
Xu Lai slid into the passenger seat, buckled up, and asked with concern, "Did something happen at the company?"
"It's nothing," Ruan Tang shook her head. "Let's go home."
"Daddy, I think Mommy's mommy called just now," Xu Yiyi whispered, leaning forward. "But Mommy told me not to tell you."
"Xu Yiyi!" Ruan Tang glared.
The little girl stuck out her tongue and quickly retreated to the back seat.
"Why are you scolding our daughter?" Xu Lai said helplessly. "Is everything okay with my mother-in-law?"
Ruan Tang pursed her lips. "It's nothing."
But her troubled heart couldn't hide the worry in her eyes.
Xu Lai shook his head. "Your sister likes to keep secrets, and so do you. You two really are sisters."
Ruan Tang hesitated for a long time before finally saying, "My parents are in East Sea City. They want to see us."
"Then let's go see them," Xu Lai said lightly. "I happen to want to meet my father-in-law and mother-in-law, too."
Ruan Tang gave a self-deprecating smile. It wasn't that simple.
Ever since she had been kicked out of the Ruan Family five years ago, her calls to her parents on holidays and festivals had never been answered. Eventually, she'd simply given up. For them to initiate contact now... Ruan Tang didn't think it could be for anything good.
"We should see them," Xu Lai said. "They're your parents, after all. And Yiyi should meet her grandparents, don't you think?"
"I'll think about it," Ruan Tang said, her voice full of hesitation.
...
Dinner was two dishes and a soup.
Xu Yiyi and Ruan Tang ate their fill. Now the mother and daughter were lounging contentedly on the sofa, sipping black tea.
"Daddy, come watch TV with us!" Xu Yiyi called out sweetly.
From the corner of her eye, Ruan Tang glanced toward the kitchen. Xu Lai was washing the dishes with great concentration. "Okay, I'll be right there," he called back.
Although she was reluctant to admit it, Xu Lai's cooking was better than anything she had ever eaten, from private kitchens to fancy restaurants. Every day, his meals left her amazed. How could food be this delicious? On top of that, Xu Lai handled nearly all the housework. This gave Ruan Tang time to actually enjoy her life after a busy day at work, doing things like cuddling with her daughter while watching TV... This was a kind of life she had never dared to dream of before. Ruan Tang had expected Xu Lai moving in to cause all sorts of problems, but as it turned out, there were only upsides and no downsides.
"Feeling pretty good about having me around, aren't you?" Xu Lai said with a grin, sitting down at the other end of the sofa as if he had read her mind.
"You're so conceited. You think too highly of yourself!" Ruan Tang retorted, putting on a stern face.
His wife is such a tsundere.
Xu Lai shook his head, took the cup of tea his daughter handed him, and started to happily watch the comedy playing on TV.
Into the dark night, the sound of Xu Yiyi's joyful laughter drifted through the window.
Life on Earth might be ordinary, but it was warm, and Xu Lai was very satisfied.
"By the way, we'll go see my parents tomorrow morning," Ruan Tang said suddenly.
"You've decided?"
"Mhm."
"Okay."
