Investigation Report of the Gods

Ch. 53

Chapter 53: Blocking the Door with One’s Body?

"Bang!"

The executor companion beside Han Su fired a shot without hesitation, and in that instant, everyone on the street froze.

Some were terrified, some stupefied, their eyes widened as they looked at the office worker who had collapsed onto the ground. Her graceful figure was no longer visible, only two pale white legs awkwardly splayed apart.

Blood spread beneath her body, and from a bloody hole in her face, jagged flesh protruded.

Death had always been an ugly thing.

In less than a second, the dead silence around them turned into screams and chaos.

Everyone scrambled to flee to the sides in a panic, like headless flies. Only Han Su and the executor stood still amidst the frantic crowd.

"Be careful!"

Han Su couldn't find the precise words to describe how he felt at that moment.

He couldn’t even ask, because executors were not allowed to speak unnecessarily.

So he didn’t know whether it was truly necessary to kill someone so easily, whether whenever a person with an indistinct face appeared, killing her was the only way to resolve the problem.

But he clearly saw that after the woman collapsed, her face suddenly became distinct, as if some force had torn off a blurry mask covering it.

At the same time, faint ripples in the air appeared on her body, as if an invisible shadow quickly fled from her.

At that moment, the executor companion beside him reported excitedly through the earpiece: "Mr. Strange Bird, an anomaly detected at Line 2!"

"Excellent!"

From the earpiece came the thrilled voice of the investigator codenamed Mr. Strange Bird: "Teams 1, 3, and 4, withdraw from the containment area and head to Line 2 for deployment!"

"The two at Line 2, stay where you are and stand by!"

"..."

There was no time to think. Han Su and the executor were already on high alert, feeling as if a strange gaze had locked onto them.

Scanning the chaotic crowd, everyone seemed to be fleeing, yet a few individuals with indistinct faces were weaving through the crowd, rapidly approaching their location.

A glance made them seem no different from others, but a focused look would evoke an eerily strange feeling.

It was an instinctual sense of danger.

"Bang! Bang! Bang!"

Suddenly, gunfire erupted in the chaos. The executor beside Han Su also noticed those rapidly approaching individuals and fired without hesitation.

He was surprisingly skilled and accurate. In an instant, he took down two of them.

However, those approaching through the crowd moved quickly, and in the confusion, it was hard to distinguish them. Several figures still swiftly closed in from behind.

The executor quickly widened the distance and fired a few more shots, but he was already showing signs of panic.

He indeed eliminated several indistinct-faced passersby, but each time one of them fell from a bullet, a blurry shadow would fly out from their body and instantly attach to another passerby.

In the blink of an eye, the new host would glitch like a broken machine, eyes rolling back rapidly. When their eyes returned to normal, it was as if they had become a different person, charging at him frantically.

But as the panicked crowd around them thinned, the shadows had fewer hosts to latch onto and began to climb toward him and Han Su without hesitation.

Han Su was still not in a position to reveal his abilities under the public eye, but his movements were extraordinarily agile.

The reflexes and alertness he had trained within the ancient castle were now on full display. His body darted left and right, dodging several shadow attacks in a flash and slipping to the roadside.

Meanwhile, the executor, after awkwardly dodging a few of the shadows, was quickly surrounded.

Countless blurry shadows simultaneously pounced onto him. At that moment, he let out a terrified scream.

"Help... help me..."

But the scream didn’t last long. His face had become indistinct, his limbs stiff, his resistance weakening by the second.

At the same time, a blurry shadow pounced toward Han Su from behind a utility pole. Han Su clenched his teeth slightly and suddenly pulled out an object, thrusting it at the shadow.

"Crack! Crack!"

A dazzling electric current sizzled. The shadow close to him let out a faint, twisted shriek and was flung away.

Han Su paused for a moment. "This baton... is actually more effective than bullets?"

"……"

Everything happened in a flash. At the intersection of Line 2, a figure flickered—Mr. Strange Bird, carrying a silver briefcase, had arrived.

His face beamed with a confident smile, as though he was certain of victory.

His movements had an eerie quality, unnaturally agile as he swiftly passed through the crowd and leapt over rooftops, gliding like a phantom, closing in quickly on Han Su’s location.

"The door is right there. These things all came from that direction…"

As he approached, he watched cautiously, his gaze brimming with fanaticism as he looked deep into the street.

Beside him, the executor had already been surrounded by five or six blurry shadows, and his ability to resist had almost completely faded.

Mr. Strange Bird glanced at him, shook his head slightly, and continued forward.

The surrounding blurry shadows swarmed toward him.

Yet facing so many blurry shadows, he remained completely unruffled. Suddenly, he began to recite a blurry incantation, and in that moment, his figure shimmered.

It was as though he had vanished from human sight, leaving only a faint shadow, cloaked in the darkness of night, passing through the blurry figures, heading straight forward.

"What is that?"

Han Su saw the scene unfold and was startled.

"Why did he suddenly vanish before my eyes?"

"Is this also a mysterious ability? Then… if I learn this ability too, what would happen after entering the ancient castle?"

He had previously confirmed that incantations worked within the ancient castle, and the ability used by this investigator clearly allowed him to evade those bizarre beings’ notice.

Then, if he learned this ability, could he become invisible in front of the monsters in the ancient castle?

As he held the Thunder 101 High-Voltage Baton and fended off the blurry shadows while pondering this enticing thought, the investigator Mr. Strange Bird had already dashed fifty meters down the street. As if he had confirmed something, his eyes locked tightly onto a door by the roadside.

"This is it…"

He lifted the briefcase and stepped forward, suddenly kicking open the door.

A scream immediately echoed from inside. A woman clutching a child stared at him in terror.

Mr. Strange Bird’s expression instantly changed. "Damn, wrong door?"

The moment he realized the mistake, he backed out of the house. His gaze sharpened as he saw the air on the street grow dense, and over a dozen blurry shadows floated past him.

They charged in unison toward Han Su, or rather, toward a nondescript store about a dozen meters from Han Su.

The door of that store was half open, and a faint cold mist seemed to drift out from within.

Mr. Strange Bird’s voice rose sharply in alarm as he shouted to Han Su, "Quick! Block that door…"

"With your body!"

"Stand in front of the door. Don’t let those things return!"

As he spoke, he ran with all his might. His silver briefcase swung so fast it left afterimages.

Han Su reacted just as swiftly. He snapped up the Thunder 101 High-Voltage Baton in his hand.

Two blinding arcs of electricity lashed out like whips, blocking the entrance of the store, striking the blurry shadows that trembled noticeably.

But ultimately, Han Su did not actually use his body to block the store entrance.

The blurry shadows merely trembled as they passed through the arcs and then slipped around them, flowing into the store.

In just four or five seconds, Mr. Strange Bird arrived right behind the last shadow that had entered the store. He yanked open the door that had just closed a second ago.

But in that fleeting moment, the fog and eerie aura that had just been faintly seeping from within had completely vanished. Only pale lighting spilled out.

Inside the store, the blurry shadows were gone. Behind the counter, the storekeeper stared blankly at the man who barged in.

"Wh-what do you want to buy?"

Mr. Strange Bird’s face bulged with veins of fury, looking as though worms were crawling under his skin.

Slowly, he released the door, and through clenched teeth, his voice squeezed out: "Do you know how much effort I put into finding this door?"

His hand trembled as he tightly gripped his gun.

Han Su took a step back, silver briefcase in his left hand, his right also clutching a gun tightly.

He was even mentally prepared to chant that incantation at any moment, yet his expression remained calm. "We’ve found it now, haven’t we?"

"Just now, Investigator Sir seemed to be shouting for me to block the door with my body? I didn’t quite catch it, but I saw the moment that executor finished chanting his incantation, he was immediately corrupted…"

"So I must have misheard, right?"

Mr. Strange Bird looked at him, and he looked back at Mr. Strange Bird.

In the silence, Mr. Strange Bird’s expression suddenly changed. He burst into laughter and said, "Not bad, really not bad. Which group are you with, young man? What’s your name?"

"Your way of handling emergencies… very mature."
