Chapter 90: The Source of The War
Unfortunately, the problem was twofold. Firstly, Li Ling was too weak to affect them from afar like this, only able to do this much, unable to even transmit a message over. Secondly, the slave seals he put in them were outdated and needed updating to support the new features.
He ignored the two and retreated from their Seas of Consciousness before focusing on his target, which was Majin Three. As Majin Three was in range, he was easily able to upgrade his slave seal, sending it from the Sea of Consciousness to Majin Three's uninitiated spiritual space, imprinting it on the depths of his spirit and soul.
Immediately, Majin Three's eyes regained their light, and he was puzzled as to why he was standing near the entrance of the cave without going out. That was until his recent surge of memories came back and his face changed, sweat pouring down from his forehead.
Oh no! Earlier when the Supreme Master came to seize their resources and extinguish their lives, he actually dared to fight back and injure him!
Majin Three cursed himself deeply for being stupid. How could he have dared to rebel against such a magnificent being like the Supreme Master? He was truly ignorant!
No, this wouldn't do, he had to find some way to make it up to the Supreme Master!
While Majin Three's mind whirred, he remembered the task his master gave him and looked at the item he held in hand, which was the only thing that couldn't be put into a void ring because of how powerful it was. Thinking about how happy it would make the Supreme Master, Majin Three relaxed a little and decided to obey the commands of his Supreme Master to the letter.
Meanwhile, unknown to Majin Three, Li Ling had already infiltrated his spiritual space and was looking at the item he held in hand through Majin Three's own eyes. He ignored the enslaved fellow's naturally distorted thoughts that were frightening from the perspective of any being with free will and focused on the treasure in hand, Li Ling's heart exploding with waves of shock.
While he was not an eminent treasure appraiser who knew the value of everything under heaven, he was still very aware of what Majin Three held in his hand, because he had even seen some images of it while on Earth.
A Dragon Ball!
No, not the fictional ones that needed to be gathered to make a wish, but the one from ancient oriental legend that was formed in the body of a True Dragon that even spawned the idea of beast cores in oriental fiction. Every True Dragon, whether in Western or Eastern Fantasy on Earth, was said to be a bevy of treasures, from their scales to their organs, their blood, and even sometimes, their excrement.
In oriental legends, the True Dragon was said to possess seven transcendent treasures on its body, each of them fulfilling a different purpose but still useful. They were the Dragon Horns, the Dragon Blood (Essence Blood specifically), the Dragon Ball, the Dragon Scale (the reverse scale), the Dragon Whip, the Dragon Claws, and the Dragon Eyes.
On the body of that Ascension Realm Jiao, there was no telling how many of its parts were destroyed by the failed tribulation, but it turned out that its Dragon Ball was able to actually upgrade from that of a mere Jiao to that of a True Dragon before its death!
Li Ling understood why the Six Paths Demon Sect issued a War of Annihilation on the spot!
Each War of Annihilation was largely overseen by the middle layer, which was the face of the sect, but regional inspections and grants were handled by minimum Void Refinement level powerhouses, which meant True Inheritors and above.
So the one who came to inspect was a True Inheritor, who noticed the corpse that the Black Heaven Sect tried to hide.
But then that did not make sense, because did the Black Heaven Sect ancestor at a mere Core Formation think he could hide anything from a Void Refinement powerhouse? The scope of the latter's spirit sense alone was enough to cover the entire region most likely.
So by using logical deduction, it seemed as if the Black Heaven Sect master discovered the corpse, extracted the Dragon Ball along with the rest—or likely just the Dragon Ball—self-reported for the inspection, hoping that the Void Refinement powerhouse wouldn't notice.
However, they may have left some traces, or the Void Refinement powerhouse was testing them, so they found out. The only question Li Ling had was, why not capture the Sect Master and Ancestor of the Black Heaven Sect then memory plunder them to find the location of the treasure to keep for yourself?
No, there was a snippet of fact that was missing in this thread that caused the chain to break. Luckily for Li Ling, he did not need to continue pointlessly speculating into a rabbit hole, since one of the participants of that event was right here with him.
Using a mixture of the Dao Soldier Technique and the Memory Archive Extraction, Li Ling was able to gather the relevant memories of the event without harming Majin Three's mind, but it did tax Li Ling greatly as he was using methods far above his current realm.
The unique immortal arts he got were awesome, but they were also costly to use, even the Yin-Yang Reversal. Switching himself came at no cost, but switching others, enticing them, and enhancing pleasure would tax his essence greatly.
Anyway, with a condensed book from Majin Three's mind now placed in the Memory Archive, Li Ling opened it in his Purple Mansion to flip through rapidly, looking for the events that led to this war.
This played out like a movie from a third-person perspective view around Huo Yang, the camera hovering just above the top of his head, slightly behind him. This allowed Li Ling to see the scene of the group of seven cultivators, four from the Black Heaven Sect who wore black and gold robes and three from the Fire Heart Sect wearing their usual red.
Each group was led by a peak second realm practitioner, the Black Heaven Sect by a rather scholarly-looking man wearing round-rimmed glasses that had his black hair tied into a neat ponytail with the familiar squinty-eyed disposition on his fair features, while the Fire Heart Sect was led by Huo Yang with his burly and unrefined body as well as looks.
"Brother Shi, are you sure we should be here? This land has not been touched by even the Six Paths Demon Sect who developed this region, so there must be hidden dangers here that could swallow us all." Huo Yang suggested rather cautiously, looking around furtively.
Meanwhile, the scholarly-looking Shi Poyun of the Black Heaven Sect was not fazed. Retaining a wide smile that was seemingly both amiable yet distrustful, he gestured towards the depths of the passage they were exploring rather grandly.
"Brother Huo need not worry. I have sent disciples here to investigate earlier and what they found is an unprecedented treasure land that could change the fate of both of our sects forever!"
Hearing this, the breathing of those who came along with Shi Poyun and Huo Yang became heavy, their eyes slowly reddening from excitement and greed. If there was one thing demonic sect cultivators craved the most, it was power!
For with power, they could do whatever they wanted, indulging in their darkest pleasures at the detriment of others without a single bit of fear for retaliation!
Huo Yang retained a rational mind due to responsibility over his sect, but even he was moved. As such, his complaints came to an end, following the group for an extended journey that saw them pass by some treasure areas and danger zones, with the group easily handling them or avoiding them if necessary.
Li Ling, viewing the scene, wondered the same thing as Huo Yang in that moment.
For Shi Poyun to have such a detailed knowledge of this area to even avoid such dangers, how many disciples' lives did he sacrifice to get this information?
Glancing at the confident, smiling face of the Black Heaven Sect's Sect Master, Huo Yang swore to be careful around this guy, or he wouldn't even know how he was played to death.
Soon, they came upon the vast chamber which wound like a valley underground, with unprecedented lushness and greenery. Even the roof of the caverns was partially opened, with a giant hole that allowed sunlight to bleed downwards and supply this hidden area with life.
But that was not what captured the gaze of the group of seven, leaving them dumbfounded. Rather, it was the partially ruined corpse of a Jiao Dragon that looked like it had been ravaged by a horde of giant piranhas, leaving only some scraps of scales and its bones remaining.
There was no flesh nor any blood. What hadn't been destroyed by the heavenly tribulation had seeped into the valley and given birth to the lush life here, and the group could even see some dragon blood beasts roaming around the plains, living life casually.
Most of these beasts started at the Rank 4 level and the closer one got to the corpse, the higher their grade. Even at the edge of the underground valley, just a casual look around revealed precious spirit plants and trees at the level of Grade 4 and 5, useful for Nascent Soul and Soul Formation cultivators.
After the shock subsided, the breathing of the entire group became ragged, as if they had run a hundred miles without pause. Instinctively, Huo Yang raised his guard and tensed up, expecting Shi Poyun to try and eliminate them now that the rewards were present, but even though the other three of the Black Heaven Sect entered battle stances, Shi Poyun himself did not move.
This caused the group, which was about to erupt into conflict, to hesitantly relax, wondering what this sect master was thinking?
"From here on, we must all swear a Heavenly Dao Oath not to reveal what happens, otherwise, we may not be able to withstand the backlash of this discovery." Shi Poyun suggested grimly.
The group did not hesitate to swear that oath, as that was what would give them the basic confidence to work together and even trust each other. The moment it was completed though, Li Ling, who was watching, was thrust out of the Memory Archive as the book suddenly snapped shut under the force of a strong power.
With a frown, Li Ling looked upward and knew that this was the force of heaven acting through the oath they took. Since Huo Yang was not aware his memories were breached, making him innocent, the heavens couldn't silence him through the backlash of the oath, but it could rather prevent Li Ling from breaching that oath indirectly.
Li Ling snorted, not pleased by this, and doubled down on his intention to slaughter the will of heaven when he achieved the necessary power. For now though, he commanded Majin Three to seal the True Dragon Ball with a restriction and continue to guard it here with his life.
In the meantime, Li Ling had some killing to do, and since he was in a slightly bad mood right now, those who were going to be his victims were not going to have a great time!
