Chapter 446: Great Rouge

William and the guards entered the city without so much as an ID check. The guards simply nodded at another pair, who flipped a switch and opened a side door that would allow William to walk inside until he reached a second door that was sealed with powerful Arrays well above Tier 6.

The guards didn't follow, but they asked William to wait inside the area before they returned to their posts. William sat down on the floor for a moment, expecting a long wait, but the second door opened only a few seconds later to reveal a middle-aged woman wearing a red and black dress with the same Family Crest.

"I'm Vera, Welcome to Great Rouge. Follow me to the Ascension Registration Center. If you try to run or get too far from me, the Arrays of Great Rouge will annihilate you before you can say "Mashed Potatoes".

Gross, I hate mashed potatoes. William crinkled his nose at the woman's words, causing her to misunderstand. She frowned and waved William to walk to the right of her, exiting the room first before waiting for him to catch up.

William found himself taking extra steps just to keep up with Vera's walking speed. Even though she was taking one step at a time at a casual pace, each leg movement almost seemed to fold space, allowing her to move much faster than the normal Cultivator.

"It's Space Magic. I'm simply compressing the area between one leg to the other to walk faster. One of the rules of Great Rouge is no flying, period. Unless you are a higher-up of the City Hall or a Cultivator with special privileges, you will be fined twenty Spirit Jades for each offense.

If you can't afford it, you'll be working in one of the Spirit Food Restaurants until your debt is paid. We don't make exceptions for anyone other than those I listed." Vera continued walking the entire time, forcing William to almost run to keep up.

William nodded repeatedly, but he was only interested in the first half of her explanation. If he couldn't fly, so be it, but it seemed that hiding his Space Magic would only slow his travel speed. Instead of trying to keep up with her movement speed, William decided to inspect her Mana flow and manipulate his Space Magic until it matched her actions perfectly.

He was slightly unfamiliar with the different Mana Density at first, but William quickly grew accustomed to it and successfully compressed the space between his legs on only the second attempt.

Sensing that William's pace had slowed but he was still right behind her, Vera looked back in surprise. He was using the exact same Technique as her, which meant he had either learned it beforehand or was an incredibly talented prodigy.

Even if he wasn't a prodigy, Space Magic was uncommon enough that William could live a decent life in the city.

"Did you just learn that?" she asked.

"I knew it before, but I didn't want to use it because I didn't know the rules." William lied.

Vera nodded. As expected, William was only a little luckier than the rest. She continued leading him through hundreds of kilometers worth of city until they reached the near center, where a large registration building matching the rest of the architecture lay.

"You go in first and take the exam. I'll wait out here for your results. Again, don't try to run." Vera smiled slightly before taking a seat on a nearby bench.

William did as he was told and passed through a pair of ornate doors. Before he could peer inside the building, he sensed the Laws of Gravity that tugged at his body slightly, trying to pull him into a portal waiting not far away from him.

William sensed that his Polarity Resistance and the Comprehension of the Gravity Element was stopping him from being pulled in, so he asked the System to temporarily turn them off and allow him to enter the building. Moments later, he disappeared from Vera's view, who wasn't paying attention at all.

"Prepare for your initial exam." a voice sounded from all around William just as the area brightened into a blank white room with nothing else inside.

"There are three exams. First, we test your Cultivation. Next, your Physical ability is tested. Finally, your Magic ability is tested. Perform as you please; your scores will allow you to qualify for various jobs across the Slightwing territory.

The better you perform, the more jobs you qualify for. If you do not perform well enough, you may be regarded as a Waste. Wastes are required to provide manual labor for the city for a period of twenty years before they are released into the World." the voice was mostly short and to the point.

Looks like I don't want to be a Waste, but I need to make sure I don't over qualify. William thought to himself.

"What's the passing score?" William asked.

"I can't reveal that, just do whatever you feel is right." the voice wasn't willing to reveal any information about its test, and it responded to his subsequent questions by raising a white pillar carrying a small orb from the ground.

This reminds me of the Gravitas Ruins Trials. Didn't Master do the same thing with his rewards? Also, is that a Cultivation Orb? It's a lot smaller than before.

William's question was instantly answered, "Place your hand on the Cultivation Orb."

I think I'll use that Ascended Cultivator as a standard. If I'm barely above him, I should meet the standard, right? William thought as he followed the voice's instructions.

"Cultivation, Ascension Realm. Lower level. Pass. Next test." less than a second went by before the pillar descended into the floor and another was raised, carrying a rectangular metal sheet that seemed countless times stronger than steel.

"Punch the Ascended Thorium Plate."

"Bang!" the plate was dented thoroughly, though William could have easily snapped it in half with just two fingers.

"Strength, Ascension Realm. Upper level. Exceptional. Next test." the second pillar lowered and a target appeared on the opposite wall.

Exceptional is usually a good thing, and the Cultivation is a pass. I'll go lighter this time. William thought as he called a hint of Space Magic to his fingertips.

The reason he chose Space Magic again even though it was a Legendary Element was because he had already shown it off. The less Elements he revealed, the better. He could save the showing off for later.

Using a simple slash attack made entirely of Space Mana and devoid of any Laws, William slashed a thin line in the target, causing minimal damage.

"Magic, Tribulation Transcendence Realm, 5th Stage. Below Standard."

"Overall score, Above Standard. Congratulations."

Somehow, William felt more excited now than when he passed the Array Hall test. He had hardly used any of his abilities in this little room, yet the test labeled him as Above Standard. If he used his full abilities, would he be Godlike or something?

"Prepare to register your Signature ID." a pillar carrying a wallet-sized platinum card appeared in front of William. "Cast a strand of Spirit Qi, Mental Strength, Soul Strength, and drop blood onto the card to register the card as your own. Once this is done, release some of your aura and pick up the card."
