247. Manners and Tempers (Book Four)
I stood before my opponent with my spear gripped tightly.
And the only reason why I had not attacked yet was because I assumed somebody would be giving a signal for us to begin, but then the mermaid man started talking.
"My name is-"
I immediately cut him off. My patience was already wearing thin, and a lot of the excitement I had for the battle had been washed away with all the foolishness that took place earlier.
"We came here to fight. Enough talking."
That line seemed to enrage him for the briefest of moments before calmness once again took over his face, which then quickly left as a look of disdain became cemented across his features as he gazed upon me.
"You lack manners. I will correct that."
All right. I did not give a fuck about a start time anymore.
I took off in a flash. The physical strength of an Infernal who naturally possessed height and physical gifts and a stronger body than most races out there.
But along with that, this was a body that went through all nine stages of Body Tempering and was then further tempered and refined and strengthened with that special spirit milk thing while under the gravity of a dead moon or whatever it was called.
My muscles rippled with intensity as every one of them flexed with speed and power as I darted after the mermaid man.
His eyes widened, and the look of disdain left faster than it came as a frown colored his features. He immediately raised his spear to block the strike I was already leveling at him.
Boom!
My spear connected with his, and he was pushed back slightly.
Ah, this was good.
"You!"
He tried to say something, but I could not hear him anymore, because after that, I began a relentless volley of attacks from more angles than I think he was ready for. I stepped forward with power, dodged with the flexibility of a ballerina, slashed with the weight of all I was behind me, blocked as if the earth itself was standing as my wall, and never once did I let up. Never once did I give him room to breathe.
I was relentless, and honestly the joy I felt almost caused my internal flames to leak out as if responding to my emotional state. But I managed to keep them within me and stick to only using the spear.
Now, perhaps if I were fighting a lesser opponent, the battle would have already been over. But thankfully for me, that was not the case. The man, in a show of anger, gritted his teeth and muttered some words I did not understand.
Then water, quite literally out of nowhere, sprouted up in a wide wall between us, and instead of allowing me to just push through it, it hardened as I smacked my spear against it, and I was forced to stop.
The wall of water then dissolved before me, but that was not all.

The mermaid man, now apparently fully taking this fight seriously, once again said some words I did not understand, and more water began to gather at the tip of his spear.
It was beginning to form a very small sphere, right at the tip of the blade. But why the hell would I just sit here and let him power up an attack? Something like that only happened in movies.
I once again started toward him, and for some reason he seemed genuinely surprised that I did so. And I could not find why.
The fight was still going on, and I did not want to believe he thought that I would let him power up an attack in the middle of a fight. Or actually, maybe he expected that I would be doing the same thing, and perhaps I would have if I wanted to use the Eternal Flames. But I did not.
But credit to him, he reacted to my approach fast enough. He took one hand off the spear while it was still gathering water at the tip and raised his other hand toward me. Then immediately, another wall of water was formed.
But my steps did not slow or pause for even a second.
I simply jumped.
The wall was not that wide nor that tall, so I jumped over it. Only the man raised his hand again, and the wall, to my shocking surprise, extended upward at a diagonal angle so that the man below me was still covered.
Ah. My smile got even wider.
The fact that this was not necessarily an easy battle made it all the more sweeter.
But while I would not be using Eternal Flames, that of course did not include Infernal Qi.
A Qi that was destructive in nature.
I covered my spear in a layer of it, raised it above my head, and as I came down on top of the wall of water, I slashed with all my power.
I got to witness a wall of moving, flowing water that was also somehow a solid stone crack in many places before shattering like broken glass, causing droplets of water to fall like rain upon the arena floor.
The mermaid man did not account for that, but it appeared it did not matter all too much, as water had stopped gathering at the tip of his spear. And even though he was surprised that I managed to break it, he still raised his spear toward me and muttered something that I believe meant fire.
The translation was not really working that well, but I could get the gist of it when the water ball at the top of his spear shot toward me faster than any bullet on Earth.
Thankfully, my eyes were also better than any tracking system on Earth, and so too was my reaction time.
My spear was still in the downward motion, but I quickly switched my hold on the shaft and brought it back up rapidly. The weight of my spear made contact with the rapidly approaching ball of water and quite literally split it into two. A whistling sound was heard as the sphere of water ripped apart.
Both sides of the water sphere sailed past my head at close enough margins to make a lesser man piss himself, but I paid that no mind before switching the grip of the spear in my hand once again. And if I had been going for the kill, I would have stabbed my spear toward the head of the mermaid man.
But that was not the goal here, which is why I turned the spear around, shifted it to my left hand, and used the butt of the spear to quite literally slap him in the side of his head from the left, which he was not fast enough to react to.
His head slammed down into the ground, and his body quite literally bounced up off the arena floor.
That was not enough to knock him unconscious, but it was more than enough that when he finally got his bearings together, when he opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was the blade of my spear hovering just before his nose.
His eyes were trembling with rage as he realized that the outcome of the battle had been decided.
I retracted my spear and extended my hand to help him up. I thought it was a fun battle, and I had no bad blood here, but the mermaid man did not agree and slapped my hand away.
That action alone almost caused a real battle to start here in this private arena. Every single one of my Infernals stood up while my guards were already in the arena, and Vrusha specifically already had a spear pressed into the neck of the mermaid man.
The opposing prince started blabbering about something regarding honor and what I dared to do and a whole bunch of other foolishness, but I paid him no mind. I simply told Vrusha to leave it alone before turning my back on the arena and all the annoying things happening and walking back to the stands.
After a moment, Vrusha, who now had a few mermaid people pointing weapons at him, lingered for a few moments longer before retracting his spear and following after me.
And to think I was the one who lacked manners.
