Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Shopping for Survival

The sound of an alarm pierced the oppressive silence, a mechanical wail echoing through the crumbling halls. Birkin's monstrous form froze mid-charge, his glowing eyes flickering toward the direction of the noise. He let out a guttural snarl, his primal instincts overtaking his rage. Like a predator chasing prey, he turned and barreled down the corridor toward the source of the sound.

"Who the hell set that off?" Leon asked, panting as he clutched his side, his voice hoarse from yelling and exertion.

"I don't care who it was," Azizah groaned, leaning heavily against a broken pillar, blood dripping from her arm. "It just bought us time."

"Not much," Ada replied coldly, her sharp eyes following Birkin's hulking figure as it disappeared into the distance. "He'll be back."

"Sherry!" Claire exclaimed, realizing they had a chance to regroup. She sprinted toward the hallway where Ben and Sherry had disappeared. "We have to get them and move now."

---

Ben pressed Sherry tighter against the corner as the echo of the alarm reached their hiding spot. His heart raced as he strained to listen, fearing the heavy footsteps of Birkin growing louder. But they didn't. Instead, they receded.

"What's happening?" Sherry whispered, her voice trembling.

"I think…" Ben hesitated, struggling to believe his luck. "I think he's gone. For now."

"Sherry!" Claire's voice called out as she rounded the corner, her flashlight sweeping the dark corridor. When she spotted them, relief flooded her face. "We need to move. Now."

Ben scowled, his defensive instincts kicking in. "Move where? The damn monster's going to kill us no matter where we go."

"Stop being an ass and get up!" Claire snapped, surprising him with her ferocity. "That alarm's not going to distract him forever. We stick together, or we die."

Ben glanced at Sherry, her tear-streaked face buried in his chest. Gritting his teeth, he rose to his feet, still clutching the pipe. "Fine, but don't expect me to play hero."

Claire rolled her eyes but didn't argue. She grabbed Sherry's hand, guiding them back toward the others.

As the group regrouped, Leon was already barking orders. "We need to get to the Sewers lower levels. There might be an escape route there."

"And what if there's not?" Ben retorted, his voice dripping with skepticism. "We're just running in circles."

"There is," Ada interjected, her tone icy but confident. "But it's a gamble. The alarm was likely triggered by someone trying to lure Birkin away—or it could be another trap."

"Either way, we don't have a choice," Azizah said, her voice strained but resolute. "We move now."

Leon looked at her, concern flashing in his eyes. "Can you even keep going?"

"I don't have a choice," she shot back, straightening despite the pain. "Let's go."

The group hurried through the sewer tunnels, the echo of their recent battle with William Birkin still fresh in their minds. Azizah led the way, her heightened reflexes alert to every sound and shadow. Behind her, Claire kept Sherry close, while Leon, Kevin, and Ada stayed on guard.

Azizah's mind, however, wasn't entirely on the present. The emergency challenge reward had been a game-changer. The system had chimed right after Birkin gone elsewhere, confirming her mission completed.

Azizah had nearly stumbled when she saw the notification. With 150 points, she finally had enough to browse the system shop properly. And considering their dwindling supplies, this was the perfect time to gear up.

---

A Temporary Breather

The group reached a small maintenance room tucked away in the sewers. It was cramped and smelled like mildew, but it was relatively safe for the moment. Kevin and Leon barricaded the door while Claire helped Sherry settle on a dusty bench.

"Everyone, take five," Azizah said, her voice calm but firm. "We need to regroup before moving on."

Ada leaned against a wall, her sharp eyes scanning the room. "What's the plan, Lockhart?"

Azizah hesitated. She didn't want to reveal the system to anyone, not even Ada. "Give me a minute," she said, brushing past the question. "I need to… check something."

She stepped into a corner, away from the others, and mentally activated the system.

Azizah felt a surge of satisfaction as the items materialized silently in front of her, neatly packed in a duffle bag. She hefted it over her shoulder and returned to the group.

Gear Distribution

"What's that?" Leon asked, his eyes widening as Azizah set the bag down on the bench.

"Supplies," Azizah replied smoothly, opening the bag. "I found a stash while we were clearing the tunnels."

Kevin let out a low whistle as she pulled out the combat shotgun. "That's a beauty. Where the hell did you find that?"

Azizah handed him the shotgun with a smirk. "Consider it yours. You're the best shot among us."

Kevin accepted the weapon with a nod of gratitude, already inspecting its design. Azizah then distributed the rest of the supplies: the advanced survival kit went to Claire, who looked relieved to have more food and medical supplies for Sherry. The medical station upgrade was discreetly integrated into their existing first-aid gear, making treatments faster and more effective. Leon took the ammo pack, redistributing bullets among the group.

"Looks like we're finally catching a break," Claire said, her voice tinged with hope as she sorted through the supplies.

Azizah nodded, though she knew better than to let her guard down. "Let's not waste it. We're moving out in ten."

---

A Moment with Ada

As the group prepared to leave, Ada approached Azizah, her gaze sharp and calculating. "You're full of surprises, Officer Lockhart."

Azizah met her eyes, her expression unreadable. "What do you mean?"

Ada gestured toward the duffle bag. "That stash. Convenient, don't you think? Almost too convenient."

Azizah shrugged, keeping her tone neutral. "Sometimes you get lucky."

Ada's lips curved into a faint smirk. "Luck, huh? Well, whatever your secret is, keep it up. We'll need all the help we can get."

Azizah didn't reply, but inside, she was grateful Ada didn't press further. The last thing she needed was for someone to start questioning her too closely.

---

With their new supplies and a renewed sense of purpose, the group pressed on. Azizah led the way, her mind racing as she tried to anticipate the challenges ahead. The lab was their destination, but she knew it wouldn't be easy. Umbrella's facility was a deathtrap filled with mutated horrors and deadly secrets.

As they moved through the tunnels, Sherry clung to Claire's hand, her small voice breaking the silence. "Do you think my daddy will be okay?"

Claire hesitated, glancing at Azizah for guidance. Azizah's heart ached for the little girl. She knelt down, her voice gentle. "Your dad… he's very sick right now. But we're going to do everything we can to help you, okay?"

Sherry nodded, her eyes filled with a mix of fear and trust. Azizah stood, her resolve hardening. She couldn't save everyone, but she'd be damned if she let Sherry fall victim to the nightmare her parents had created.
