Chapter 200: Reinforcements Arrive
"Expelliarmus!"
Kael Apparated behind Saruman and cast the spell, successfully hitting Saruman's staff.
The staff that belonged to Kael flew from Saruman's hand and landed back in Kael's grasp.
Without hesitation, Kael Apparated away before Saruman could retaliate.
Saruman's expression grew cold and ugly. He hadn't expected, as the great White Wizard, to be outmaneuvered by this young upstart.
Lifting his remaining staff, Saruman began chanting resonant Quenya incantations, his low voice echoing over the wilderness.
In an instant, the sky filled with black clouds.
Kael sensed danger. The air suddenly felt dense, and his hair stood on end.
The next moment, lightning struck directly at him.
Kael Apparated again to evade, but as soon as he reappeared elsewhere, lightning instantly crashed down again.
It was as if he had a tracking device: lightning always found him wherever he landed.
As Kael and Saruman continued their struggle, suddenly a Patronus in the form of an owl flew in from afar, landed swiftly on Kael's shoulder, and then merged into his body as if delivering a message.
Kael's face lit up with joy.
"They're finally here!"
Saruman instinctively felt uneasy at Kael's smile.
"What are you smiling at?"
"I'm smiling because you fell into our trap," Kael replied with mockery.
Soon, a figure appeared, flying in from the sky.
"Kael, I hope I'm not too late?"
It was Gandalf, riding a broom.
"If you'd been any later, you'd have needed to rescue me from Orthanc!" Kael joked with mock complaint, scanning around. "Where are Lady Galadriel and Lord Elrond? Haven't they arrived yet?"
Gandalf smiled apologetically. "As soon as I got the message, I rushed here from Edoras. As for Lady Galadriel and Lord Elrond, they, along with the Ents, have already attacked Isengard and will be here soon."
Saruman, listening from below, turned pale and enraged.
"Gandalf, what is the meaning of this? Why are Lady Galadriel and the others invading my territory? Are you declaring war on me?"
Gandalf landed beside Kael, looking at Saruman with heavy disappointment.
"Saruman, you were once the leader among our five wizards who came voluntarily to Middle-earth to oppose evil. But now, you've fallen, aligning yourself with Sauron. Do you still remember your original duty?"
Saruman's expression changed, and he denied it heatedly.
"Gandalf, don't slander me! For centuries, I've fought evil without rest. You can't defame my achievements! I know you've always coveted my place. In the White Council, you, Galadriel, and Elrond have your secret clique, and with the Three Elven Rings among you, you treat me as nothing!"
His outrage and hurt filled his words. He accused Gandalf of ambition, of currying favor to claim leadership and power.
Gandalf only shook his head with a sigh.
"Saruman, you've been blinded by pride and ambition. I've never sought to replace you or rule the world. My role has always been to aid Middle-earth's free peoples against evil."
For a moment Saruman seemed moved, but then his eyes hardened.
"Don't think you can fool me!" he sneered. "Even Radagast has his own secrets. You can't possibly be as selfless as you claim."
Gandalf was about to answer when Kael cut in, tired of the conversation.
"Gandalf, don't waste words. He was seduced by Sauron long ago. Now's our chance to end this. Let's finish it!"
"Kael is right. He has gone too far. He cannot be brought back," came Elrond's voice from afar.
Elrond stood atop the Great Eagle Thorondor, elven sword in hand, expression cold.
Behind him, the dragon Smaug swooped down, carrying Lady Galadriel on his back.
The two elves, one dragon, and one eagle surrounded Saruman.
"Lady Galadriel, Lord Elrond. You're here!" Kael greeted happily.
With four against one plus a dragon and eagle, the odds were overwhelmingly in their favor.
Lady Galadriel smiled gently at Kael.
"Thanks for holding on so long," she said.
Elrond also looked at him with approval.
Kael waved it off modestly. "Apart from a few twists, it wasn't too dangerous. I hope I didn't let you down."
Gandalf asked Elrond for a report.
Elrond nodded with a smile.
"All went smoothly. The Ents have overtaken Isengard, purging Saruman's warg and orc experiments. With help from Smaug and Thorondor, Lady Galadriel and I entered Orthanc and sealed it, with the Ents now standing guard."
He then looked sternly at Saruman, producing a palantír emanating evil energy.
"Saruman, do you recognize this? We found it in your secret chamber, along with evidence of your warg, orc, and Ring of Power experiments. Do you have anything to say?"
Saruman saw all was lost. His face darkened, but he was deeply wary of those around him.
"When did you discover my betrayal?"
"Kael foresaw it as soon as you allied with Sauron. We just lacked proof and still hoped for your return," Lady Galadriel said from dragonback, her eyes sad and disappointed.
"So you've known all along, searching for proof behind my back?" Saruman muttered, glaring with anger and complicated emotion at Kael. "I really underestimated you... You ruined my plans again and again!"
"So today was your plan? Using the boy as bait to draw me from Orthanc and cut off my retreat?"
"Pity, it wasn't planned. But I won't tell you how. After all, 'the villain dies from talking too much!'" Kael quipped.
On cue, Kael shouted. "Smaug, go for him!"
He also fired off a Killing Curse.
After the close calls he'd had with Saruman, Kael could finally let off steam.
Unsaid was that Kael, passing Isengard, had felt he was being watched. That prying feeling, at first, he'd assumed was Sauron, but soon realized it was Saruman using a palantír.
Already wary, he knew Saruman meant no good when the wizard tried to spy on him.
When Saruman tried to kill him with lightning, Kael knew he was outmatched and immediately used his Patronus to call Gandalf and Elrond for help.
Now Smaug unleashed a torrent of dragonfire at Saruman, who had to defend with his staff while fending off attacks from all sides.
With no will to fight, Saruman only wanted to escape.
The others sighed and joined the battle.
Elrond, wielding his sword at close range, displayed immense skill, blocking magic and shattering fireballs with one swing.
"Saruman, surrender!" Gandalf called with a thunderous voice, launching a magical impact with his staff. "Lay down your weapon and we won't harm you."
"Surrender? Dream on!" Saruman snarled, still resisting.
He summoned tremendous magic, his staff's gem sending a beam skyward.
Reciting ancient incantations, he darkened the sky.
Massive thunderclouds boiled above, then lightning rained from the heavens, striking at all of them.
Kael paled. Saruman's power exceeded his expectations.
Even Elrond and Gandalf grew grave.
Thorondor and Smaug trembled in fear, knowing just one strike could mean death or severe injury.
At this moment, Lady Galadriel stepped forward.
Raising her right hand, the Ring of Water, Nenya, shimmered as it formed a vast transparent shield over them, Smaug, and Thorondor.
Countless bolts crashed onto the shield, unleashing terrifying explosive force.
