Chapter 195: Mysterious Formation

Kael, who was flying south at this time, had no idea what was happening in Orthanc Tower.

He flew over the Gap of Rohan and could see the continuous White Mountains in the south from afar.

The White Mountains ran east-west, located between Gondor and Rohan, with Rohan to the north and Gondor to the south.

Kael's destination for this journey, the Paths of the Dead, was at Dwimorberg Mountain in the White Mountains, which was the entrance to the Paths of the Dead.

He first flew to the top of a cliff at the southern end of Dunharrow Valley, located on the northern side of the mountain range.

From the bottom of the cliff to the top was a treacherous path, mainly carved out of the cliff face, spiraling upward.

At every turn in the road stood ancient human-shaped statues. These stone carvings were clumsy and massive, all depicted sitting cross-legged with arms folded. Their features had been worn away by the passage of time, leaving only hollow eye sockets that emanated an inexplicably eerie aura.

At the top of the cliff was a grassland with an ancient road in the center and shapeless standing stones on both sides.

This was a natural place of worship, with the grassland at the cliff top serving as an open-air altar. Apart from the standing stones and statues along the roadside, there were almost no other obvious artificial religious structures.

This was the Dunharrow, the gateway to the Paths of the Dead.

The establishment of Dunharrow was beyond historical verification, but it was known to predate the arrival of the Númenóreans to Middle-earth, possibly even dating back to the time of Morgoth.

There was no accurate account of who was worshipped there either.

However, Elrond had once shared his speculation with Kael that Dunharrow might well have been a place of worship built for Morgoth by conquered natives when he nearly ruled the entire continent.

Only after Morgoth's defeat and banishment to the Void beyond was this place gradually abandoned.

Kael landed at Dunharrow on the cliff top.

He wanted to see if he could complete a check-in here as well.

[Hogwarts Check-in System: Located at White Mountains - Dunharrow, check in?]

The system responded immediately as Kael landed.

Without hesitation, Kael answered. "Check in."

[Check-in successful. Congratulations on obtaining "Those Ancient Sacrificial Magics"!]

Kael looked at the magic book before him, its cover depicting a naked man hanging on a cross, and couldn't help but feel surprised and curious.

The cover was so distinctive that if he wasn't certain this was a magic book, he might have thought it was some church book from his previous life.

He curiously opened the book and began reading.

His expression grew increasingly astonished.

The sacrificial magic spells inside greatly shocked him.

Among them was the magic Voldemort had used for resurrection: bone of the father, flesh of the servant, and blood of the enemy, to complete the sacrificial ritual of resurrection.

Besides this, there were other bloody sacrificial magics, such as killing livestock as sacrifice to heal the sick or injured, or the more gruesome use of human sacrifice to gain wealth, fortune, or power.

Kael even found a love sacrifice magic: where one person voluntarily gives up their life and soul in exchange for powerful protection for their beloved.

This love sacrifice magic reminded Kael of Harry Potter's mother, Lily Evans.

She had sacrificed her own life, leaving powerful protection on Harry Potter that successfully reflected Voldemort's Killing Curse back at him, causing Voldemort to lose his body and retreat weakened to the Albanian forests.

This led to Harry Potter's reputation as the Boy Who Lived and his future repeated defeats of Voldemort, ultimately leading to the Dark Lord's death.

With the Crown of Wisdom's enhancement, it didn't take Kael long to read and memorize all the contents of the book.

After finishing, he put the magic book away directly.

Though the sacrificial magic within had its unique aspects, it was too bloody and extreme, often involving the sacrifice of life, soul, or magical power, even more evil than "Secrets of the Darkest Art."

He truly didn't know how Lily Evans had found this magic book and learned that sacrificial magic from it.

Although he found it bloody and costly, Kael didn't avoid it entirely. He thought that if he had time, he might capture some orcs or wargs to test the sacrificial magic and see if it worked.

After all, the benefits gained after sacrifice were somewhat tempting.

Having completed the check-in, Kael mounted his flying broomstick, preparing to leave.

But as he reached midair and casually looked down, Kael was stunned, his flying motion freezing.

He discovered that the standing stones and statues below were arranged very regularly, seemingly positioned in some kind of formation pattern, similar to a certain sacrificial formation he'd just read about in the book.

Only the lack of any magical fluctuations made him uncertain.

Curious, Kael landed again and approached one of the statues, carefully examining it with his wand, but still got no response.

"Did I guess wrong?" Kael wondered with some confusion.

But he didn't give up. Looking at the lower half of the statue buried in soil, he waved his wand to expose the entire statue.

Under magic's effect, the ground constantly churned outward, and Kael's expression grew increasingly surprised.

The part of the statue visible above ground was only a small section. Below ground, besides the statue's body, there was a stone base connected to it.

He had to dig nearly three meters deep before the complete statue was exposed.

But what caught Kael's attention wasn't the statue itself. He discovered that at the bottom of the deep pit were hard black stone slabs.

Moreover, the black stone slabs had grooved channels with mysterious patterns.

Seeing this, Kael grew even more curious.

He took out his staff and struck the ground heavily with a spell.

The ground was like a water surface hit by a huge stone, instantly raising waves in all directions. Thick grassland soil pushed outward like a landslide, with meters-thick earth sliding toward the cliff and falling to the bottom.

The cliff top's ground level was forcibly lowered by several meters. The original grassland disappeared, exposing a huge carved black stone surface.

Apparently, countless ages of accumulated dust had covered Dunharrow, preventing people from discovering its true appearance.

Kael cast spells to raise fierce winds, sweeping away dust and grime from the ground surface.

The black stone surface was carved with complex, mysterious narrow grooves that looked like connected small channels, forming patterns resembling human body meridians.

The standing stones and statues were like individual nodes and hubs.

Due to time's ravages, these meridians inevitably showed some damage.

"Reparo!"

Under the Repair Charm's effect, the damaged ground patterns quickly restored.

When the complete pattern appeared, Kael finally confirmed this was a formation.

Looking at this ancient formation, Kael wasn't clear about its purpose, but remembering Elrond's mention that Dunharrow might be related to Morgoth, he cautiously refrained from trying to activate the formation.

Though Morgoth had been defeated and banished to the Void beyond the world of Arda, as the once most powerful Vala, Kael dared not risk any connection with him.

So he simply used parchment to record this formation's pattern, planning to have Elrond examine it when he returned.

But just as he finished drawing the pattern and prepared to destroy this formation, a raven suddenly dove down, crashing dead onto the ground in a tragic state.

Kael was somewhat slow to react.

The next second, a flock of ravens' cries came from the distant sky.

Then, to Kael's amazement, they seemed to go mad, accelerating toward the ground and quickly staining it red with blood.

The ravens' blood flowed into the stone slabs' grooves, spreading rapidly as if with its own will, trying to fill all the channels.

The previously motionless formation suddenly began emitting magical fluctuations. An evil aura started spreading through the formation, and even the statues seemed about to come alive, their hollow eye sockets appearing to gain cold gazes.

This sudden change made Kael very uneasy.

Without hesitation, he cast a highly destructive spell, trying to destroy the formation.

"Confringo!"

A dazzling spell shot toward the formation, carrying tremendous explosive destructive power, striking the black stone surface and statues.

But unexpectedly, the spell that should have blown this place to smithereens instead had no effect when it hit the formation. It was absorbed by the formation instead.

The formation instantly gained tremendous supplementation, accelerating its activation.

The sky above Dunharrow, influenced by the formation, became overcast with dark clouds, as if a storm was approaching!

Kael's expression changed drastically. He dared not cast more magical attacks, but seeing this dangerous formation about to awaken, he made a split-second decision and shouted. "Flammifer!"

Flammifer instantly appeared in his hand.

He grabbed the sword and charged directly at the formation, forcefully stabbing it into the ground.

The stone slabs cracked, and Flammifer released scorching flames that burned the ground. The basilisk venom power, Eärendil's Light, and Air-ring power contained in the blade all corroded the formation.

The formation seemed like gears getting stuck, suddenly stopping.

Flammifer and the formation's power opposed each other, falling into a brief stalemate.

Seeing this, Kael immediately pulled the divine spear Aeglos from his space bag and forcefully stabbed it into the ground.

The divine spear was sharp, instantly piercing the hard black stone and then erupting with tremendous destructive power.

Crack crack crack! Starting from where the spear penetrated, the ground rapidly split into cracks spreading in all directions, growing larger and larger.

Finally, the stone slabs shattered into pieces, the formation's patterns breaking.

The formation's power could no longer continue and instantly dissipated.

The dark clouds in the sky gradually dispersed, letting sunlight through again.

Kael breathed a heavy sigh of relief.

Fortunately, he had successfully interrupted the formation's activation. Otherwise, who knew what terrible things might have emerged?

He pulled the divine spear and Flammifer from the ground, then looked at the formation patterns on the surface and began directly destroying them.

After completely erasing all the pattern grooves and destroying the standing stones and statues, only after ensuring no one could restore them did Kael feel relieved, remounting his flying broomstick and heading toward the Paths of the Dead.
