Chapter 184: Evil Spirit Parasitism
The werewolf's sudden outburst greatly surprised Kael. But this didn't affect his continued pursuit.
"Thorondor, catch up to it!"
Great eagle Thorondor let out a clear cry, flapped his wings, and became a blur chasing the werewolf.
No matter how fast the werewolf was, how could it compare to a great eagle's aerial advantage?
Thorondor quickly caught up to the fleeing werewolf, extending sharp talons to grab it directly.
The werewolf seemed to have eyes in its back, instantly dodging sideways to avoid the eagle's claws.
"Avada Kedavra!"
But Kael on the eagle's back was clearly not idle, attacking with seeming prescience.
The green-glowing Killing Curse instantly collided with the werewolf.
The werewolf let out a wail as several evil spirits were stripped from its body and instantly dissipated.
The werewolf paused for a moment, then continued running with full vigor.
"It didn't die from that?" Kael's eyes widened in great surprise.
He'd been very confident in this attack, never expecting it to fail.
But he quickly understood. The werewolf had swallowed hundreds of evil spirits and now possessed countless souls within its body.
The Killing Curse's attack was essentially soul stripping, causing bodily death. So his earlier curse only stripped away a few evil spirits, while the main possessing demon remained unharmed, naturally causing no damage.
Since the Killing Curse was useless, Kael wouldn't waste magical power.
Seeing Kael and the eagle catch up again, the werewolf suddenly howled toward the distance.
The next second, over a dozen wolf howls responded from the North Downs forests.
"More werewolves?" Kael looked toward where the howls came from, frowning.
Soon, over a dozen bull-sized werewolves rapidly converged. These werewolves clearly followed werewolf Scuul as their leader, obeying its commands.
Kael didn't give them a chance to gather, slashing his Flammifer at the nearest werewolf.
The scorching air blade instantly struck one werewolf. The werewolf was split in two at the waist and quickly burst into flames. Along with the werewolf's screams came a sharp, ghostly shriek from within its body.
Then the evil spirit inhabiting the werewolf lost its host and emerged as black smoke.
The werewolf's body, having lost its evil spirit, rapidly decayed as if time-accelerated, turning to ash in the flames.
The disembodied evil spirit seemed unable to survive independently and was constantly dissipating.
But the next second, Wolf King Scuul charged directly at the spirit and swallowed it whole.
Its aura immediately became more powerful, even its body size rapidly swelling.
Kael frowned, his expression darkening.
He'd killed one werewolf but let this creature benefit, making it the biggest winner.
Now with two evil spirits in its body, it was even harder to deal with.
For a moment, Kael hesitated to attack the other werewolves. Killing them would only make Wolf King Scuul stronger.
But not killing them while being entangled was more troublesome.
Kael felt somewhat constrained.
However, Kael soon noticed that though the wolf king had grown stronger by devouring spirits, its reaction speed had slowed considerably. Its movements seemed uncoordinated.
The wolf king's spirit-devouring behavior wasn't without drawbacks.
A werewolf's body should only host one evil spirit to maintain perfect coordination. Even when wolf king Scuul had previously swallowed hundreds of evil spirits, those spirits couldn't compare to its main spirit, so it could suppress them from causing trouble.
But now the wolf king had devoured another equal-quality spirit. Two spirits coexisting instinctively competed for bodily control. However, since the devoured spirit was relatively weaker, it was temporarily suppressed by the main spirit.
Kael quickly understood the situation in a short time.
He immediately had a strategy.
He sneered inwardly. "Want to devour more spirits? Then I'll help you!"
He stopped holding back, wielding wand and Flammifer.
His wand created various obstacles to slow the werewolves while his other hand swung Flammifer, releasing flames and air blades.
Great eagle Thorondor wasn't to be outdone, swiftly diving to grab werewolves, steel talons piercing through them while his sharp beak cracked their skulls, ending their lives.
With their cooperation, werewolves fell one by one, hosted spirits emerging as black smoke with sharp, piercing ghostly wails.
Wolf King Scuul, as Kael expected, perhaps because the two spirits in its body had short-circuited its brain, recklessly devoured other spirits.
As it consumed more spirits, its aura grew more terrifying, the surrounding evil power becoming as thick as black ink with an aura of fear and dread.
Even the weather was affected and changed, becoming overcast.
However, correspondingly, Wolf King Scuul's previously cunning, shrewd eyes now showed struggling, mad, fractured expressions.
Its body now contained over a dozen evil spirits and hundreds of evil souls, all trying to seize bodily control. Utter chaos.
When there were only a few spirits, Scuul's main spirit could suppress them with home advantage, but now its bodily control was precarious.
"All of you be quiet! If you don't obey me, we'll all die!" Wolf king Scuul roared with a ferocious expression.
Perhaps the Wolf King's threat worked. The internal spirits quieted somewhat.
But Kael wouldn't give them a chance to unite, quickly casting. "Imperio!"
The Wolf King couldn't dodge the spell and was instantly hit.
With the Imperius Curse falling, the spirits that had just calmed immediately rioted.
The spirits frantically fought for bodily control, even the lowest-level evil souls causing chaos.
The Wolf King's body was divided and controlled by countless consciousnesses. Eyes moving independently, limbs serving different masters, and even individual muscle control belonging to different entities.
The Wolf King stood frozen in place, as if immobilized, consciousness falling into chaotic madness.
"Now!"
Kael leaped from the great eagle's back, grasping Flammifer and driving it deep into the wolf king's head, channeling magical power.
Flammifer released scorching flames. The basilisk venom, Fiendfyre, Eärendil's Light, and Air-ring power all erupted within the wolf king.
The Wolf King instantly died, flames in its eyes quickly extinguishing. Simultaneously, over a dozen unwilling, piercing shrieks rang from within.
Like many ghosts wailing together, penetrating the soul and causing great discomfort.
Kael acted quickly, pulling out Flammifer and immediately rolling off the wolf's body, retreating rapidly.
Indeed, the next second, over a dozen streams of black smoke burst from the wolf king, lingering unwillingly while seeking another host.
But Kael didn't give them the chance. His Patronus formed a huge barrier, trapping all spirits and evil souls within.
Kael took out a crystal vial to release Eärendil's Light. The holy starlight made spirits and evil souls melt like snow under sunlight, rapidly dissipating.
When the last evil soul reluctantly vanished completely, Kael painfully put away the crystal vial.
Eärendil's Light wasn't unlimited. Using it meant less remained. If not to avoid complications, he wouldn't have used it.
Looking back at the wolf king's corpse, it had turned to ash in the flames.
Despite victory, Kael showed little joy.
This battle wasn't easy. Both evil spirits and demon-possessed werewolves differed from past enemies. Regular spell attacks were useless, and physical attacks were ineffective. Truly troublesome.
This made him more cautious about his upcoming journey to the Paths of the Dead seeking Sulfur of the Soul.
After all, he'd face an army of ghosts there, and he lacked Aragorn's identity as Isildur's heir to gain their mercy.
Ghosts weren't afraid of Killing Curses and other spells since they were already dead. Ordinary attacks couldn't harm them.
They also weren't dark creatures like evil spirits or demons that could be dealt with using the same methods.
Kael shook his head, temporarily setting aside these thoughts. He'd improvise when the time came.
He mounted the great eagle and returned toward the goblin caves.
After all this trouble, besides checking in to obtain Dark Mark magic, he had no other gains. Instead, he encountered evil spirits, goblins, and werewolves.
Kael felt this first stop was very unlucky.
The goblin caves were winding and interconnected. With all goblins burned to ash by Fiendfyre, they seemed empty and silent.
Kael searched the caves and finally found the goblins' treasury.
But seeing a pile of broken armor and weapons, plus several chests of copper and silver coins and small amounts of gold and jewels, he could only curse his luck.
"Real paupers. This trip was for nothing!"
Kael grumbled as he stored the treasure chests in his space bag and left the goblin caves.
As for the werewolf's lair, aside from piles of bones, there was nothing else.
Kael could only leave the North Downs disappointedly, flying west.
His next stop would be Annúminas for check-in, then southwest to the Grey Havens.
Annúminas was the former capital of the northern kingdom of Arnor, but as Arnor split into Cardolan, Arthedain, and Rhudaur, Annúminas gradually lost its central position and was eventually abandoned.
Only when Aragorn became king of the reunited kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor would this city be rebuilt.
The distance from Annúminas to North Downs Fornost was roughly equal to Weathertop to Fornost.
Great eagle Thorondor carried Kael for half a day before he saw a huge lake in a distant valley.
That was Lake Evendim beside Annúminas, also called Lake Nenuial.
It was also the source of the Brandywine River at the Shire's border.
