Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Yukino Is Losing It
"I am not joking Hikari-kun. You don't really believe me, right? I can show you my powers again if you like."
Hikari grabbed Yukino's raised wrist, gently stopping her from summoning another flurry of snowflakes.
Then, smiling he said, "I never said you were joking. I believe it, Miss Yukino—you really are the legendary yuki-onna."
"But," he added with a teasing grin, "that doesn't mean I can't also think you're stunningly beautiful. Honestly, you're more like a celestial maiden than a snow maiden."
Mifuyu's eyes widened in surprise. "Really?"
Revealing her true identity as a yuki-onna hadn't seemed to faze Hikari at all. She found it hard to believe—it almost felt like a dream to her.
Hikari nodded confidently. "Of course. Think back to the first time we met."
Mifuyu's mind raced back to their initial encounter, when Takahashi had come by to collect rent. She remembered opening the door, and the very first thing Hikari had said to her was...
"'Snow Maiden'—those were your first words!" Mifuyu chuckled. "So that's why. I thought you'd figured out my true identity back then. I was terrified."
Hikari laughed. "And did you consider silencing me for good?"
Shaking her head, Mifuyu answered sincerely, "Of course not. I'm not some bloodthirsty monster. I've never hurt anyone in my life."
Suddenly, her expression turned serious. She stared into Hikari's eyes and asked hesitantly, "But... Hikari, do you mind? That I'm not human? That I'm a yuki-onna, a monster?"
Hikari shook his head with a warm smile. "Not at all."
"Miss Yukino, aside from having incredible powers that most people can only dream of, you're no different from any human. You laugh, you cry, you get hungry and eat, thirsty and drink. Isn't that right?"
Hearing this, Mifuyu fell silent for a moment.
Hikari then asked gently, "Living as a yuki-onna in human society... that must be hard, isn't it?"
Mifuyu hesitated, then nodded vigorously, tears welling in her eyes. "It is!"
"As a yuki-onna, as a monster, there are so many inconveniences in human society. Before I met you, Hikari, I'd lost all hope. It had been so long since I'd felt even a shred of happiness."
"It was you, Hikari. You brought me joy I never dared to dream of, hope I never thought I'd find."
A faint, fragrant breeze wafted toward Hikari.
Before he realized it, Mifuyu had leaned into his shoulder. Her cool yet slightly warm body pressed gently against him. Looking down, Hikari saw her silver hair cascading over his chest.
She tilted her delicate face up to him, her beauty highlighted by a faint blush. Her sapphire-blue eyes shimmered with unshed tears, full of vulnerability and longing.
Hikari sensed her silent plea for warmth. Without hesitation, he wrapped an arm around her and pulled her close. Gently patting her back, he whispered, "It's okay, Miss Yukino. I'll be here to help you from now on."
At those words, Mifuyu buried her face in his chest and broke into sobs.
"Hikari-kun, *sob* *sob* thank you... thank you so much. You're the k-kindest person I've ever met. Truly, thank you. And also..."
"I love you, Hikari!"
"I can't keep these feelings inside anymore "
"Hikari, I love you so much."
As she confessed, Hikari felt his shirt dampen with tears. He smiled wryly, 'Man, snow maidens really do cry a lot.
[Ding~ Yukino's affection for the Host has reached a critical threshold. She has confessed. The barrier between human and monster can no longer stand in your way. Such actions perfectly embody the ideals of the Pure Love System, championing its values to the fullest]
[Ding~ Congratulations, Host. You've been rewarded with 'Pure Love Points +1000]
'Wait, 1000 points? Seriously?'
Though thrilled, Hikari ignored the system's untimely interruption. Instead, he continued soothing Mifuyu, patting her back and speaking softly.
"I understand, Miss Yukino. You don't have to cry anymore. It's okay."
Gradually, Mifuyu's tears subsided. Then, blushing deeply, she asked, "Hikari, are you... in a relationship with Miss Shinomiya?"
Hikari paused for a moment, then answered honestly, "Not officially. We're... close friends, I guess."
At that, a glimmer of hope flashed in Mifuyu's eyes.
'Maybe he wouldn't mind having a yuki-onna as his wife.' [T/N: I don't mind, why don't I have one? 😭]
She almost blurted it out but hesitated, too shy and inexperienced in matters of the heart she decided to take a more indirect approach. She looked around and remarked, "Miss Shinomiya's house is a bit messy, isn't it?"
"By the way, Hikari, have you eaten yet?"
He shook his head. "Not yet."
Mifuyu gasped. "What? How could Miss Shinomiya invite you over and not prepare food in advance?"
"Hikari, you must be starving. Why don't you come to my place instead? It's right next door. I'll cook for you, and you can even take a bath. Honestly, Miss Shinomiya's bath might take ages—us girls take forever in there."
If Shinomiya were here, she'd be fuming.
'This sly woman is trying to one-up me, isn't she?'
But Hikari, oblivious to Mifuyu's intentions, could only sense a vague unease. Still, when she clasped her hands in a pleading gesture, he couldn't say no.
"Alright, lead the way," he said.
Together, they left Shinomiya's house and entered Mifuyu's home.
Not long after they left, Shinomiya emerged from the bathroom, wrapped in a towel. "Hikari, I'm done. You can shower no—huh? Where is he?"
She stared at the empty living room in disbelief, 'Did he leave with Mifuyu? Already?'
Shionomiya was furious. "That cunning widow. No honor at all."
'I just took a bath, and she swooped in to steal my man?'
Gritting her teeth, Shinomiya dressed and stormed over to Mifuyu's door.
But unlike her own home, Mifuyu's was locked tight. She raised her hand to knock but hesitated, eventually retreating with a defeated sigh.
Back in her living room, she sat down, only to hear faint sounds from next door.
Her face went blank as the noises grew more... familiar.
"I just went to take a bath... and I've been completely outmaneuvered?"
———
Meanwhile, at Mifuyu's house, Hikari noticed something odd—a shattered remote by the sofa. His eye twitched.
When he offered to help prepare dinner, he discovered a broken cutting board, shattered plates, and crushed vegetables.
"Miss Yukino, are you... okay?" he asked cautiously.
Blushing, Mifuyu shoved him out of the kitchen. "It's fine. I'll handle everything. You just relax and take a bath."
Hikari left with a nervous smile, 'I really hope she doesn't lose it...'
———
In the bath, Hikari marveled at the scalding water temperature but shrugged it off as a quirk of her being a yuki-onna.
That's when the door creaked open, and Mifuyu entered with a bottle of body wash in hand.
"Hikari, I thought you might need this," she said softly, her eyes flicking over his toned chest, 'Oh my god...'
