Chapter 42: Inosuke

When Sanemi saw Obanai's conflicted expression, he immediately assumed the man thought he was asking him to find Ren.

"What I mean is for you to go find Shinobu and ask her."

"After all, Ren belongs to Butterfly House now. You can ask her to find out."

Sanemi was visibly stunned upon hearing this. He seemed hesitant. Glancing suspiciously at Obanai, he asked, "Why did you come here to tell me this?"

Obanai froze, not expecting Sanemi to catch on so quickly. Still, he wouldn't reveal his real intentions.

Shrugging, he replied, "I just don't want you to lose to Ren. Is that so hard to understand?"

"Something's fishy." Sanemi stroked his chin and eyed Obanai with suspicion. "Why are you so enthusiastic? That's not like you!"

Obanai's face darkened. "Can't I care, just this once?"

At that moment, a crow swooped down hurriedly. It was Obanai's.

A small scroll of letter paper was tied to its feet.

Before it could land, it squawked, "It's Mitsuri—"

"Snake's Breath: Fifth Form—Serpent Coil!"

A gust of sword wind swept through the air.

By the time Sanemi realized what had happened, the crow was already nestled in Obanai's arms, its beak covered by his hand.

Obanai glanced at Sanemi one last time. "So, are you going to the Butterfly House to ask Shinobu?"

Sanemi stubbornly shook his head. "No way!"

"Really?"

"Absolutely not!"

"Suit yourself."

Obanai turned and walked away, holding the crow tightly. His pace quickened when Sanemi called after him, disappearing in the blink of an eye.

Though confused, Sanemi didn't think too much about it. He glanced at the broken panel in his hands and muttered, "I'm not going!"

---

The sky was clear, birds chirped, and flowers swayed in the gentle breeze.

Today, an important member of the Demon Slayer Corps returned to the Butterfly House.

Bare-chested with two serrated Nichirin Blades strapped to his waist, Inosuke, wearing his signature boar mask, looked as imposing as ever.

"Why isn't anyone coming out to greet me?" he wondered aloud, hands on his hips.

Since the battle at Natagumo Mountain, Inosuke had faced a crushing blow to his pride. But the time spent recovering at the Butterfly House had softened him somewhat.

He had grown fond of the place—considering it a second home.

However, his usual welcome was missing today.

"What's going on? I just got back from a mission! Why isn't Tanjiro or anyone else running out to greet me?"

Annoyed, Inosuke kicked open the door and leaped over the wall, landing in the front yard.

The sight of the crowded yard hurt his eyes, so he directed his attention to the quieter backyard.

There, he spotted a young man practicing with a wooden sword—Ren.

The figure of Kanoe was nowhere to be seen.

"That guy!" Inosuke's eyes widened as he crouched behind some tall grass, observing Ren's movements like a wild animal.

"What a strange sword technique," he murmured.

As a user of Beast Breathing himself, Inosuke had always been drawn to unorthodox fighting styles. Ren's movements captivated him.

He watched as Ren's fluid swordplay mimicked the predatory nature of insects.

It reminded him of hornets he had encountered in the mountains—small but deadly creatures whose stings he had barely survived thanks to his natural resistance to poison.

"This guy knows the secret of the hornet!"

Inosuke's excitement boiled over. The earlier frustrations faded from his mind.

In the courtyard, Ren alternated between lunging forward, sliding, and moving with rapid precision.

Taking a deep breath, Ren prepared to execute a new move from the Bee Breathing technique.

But before he could, Inosuke burst out of the grass.

Ren's body vibrated as he swung his wooden sword, channeling the technique's unique power.

"Bee's Breath: Eighth Form—Vampire's Bee Fang!"

A loud buzz filled the air as the tip of the wooden blade unleashed a series of sharp, vibrating strikes.

In an instant, the surrounding noises fell silent.

Ren opened his eyes—but there was no one in front of him.

"Was I imagining things?" he wondered.

From the front yard, Kanzaki Aoi's voice rang out, "Lady Shinobu has returned!"

Hearing this, Ren quickly set aside his practice and straightened himself before heading toward the front yard.

Little did he know, hidden in the grass nearby, a certain boar-headed swordsman had fallen fast asleep.

---

"Lady Shinobu, you're finally back!"

"We missed you so much, Shinobu-sama!"

"Shinobu-sama, can we have a hug?"

Shinobu Kocho entered the Butterfly House, greeted by the excited trio of Kiyo, Sumi, and Naho.

She gently patted their heads and looked around at the busy staff tending to the patients filling the beds.

"Goodness, it's busier than usual. Have you all been working extra hard while I was away?" she asked with a warm smile.

"Yes, Shinobu-sama!" the girls replied in unison.

Kanzaki Aoi approached cautiously. "Shinobu-sama, did you receive word about the funding this time?"

Snap!

"Oh dear!" Shinobu clapped her hands together with a sheepish grin. "I completely forgot! Let me figure something out next time, alright?"

She ushered Aoi away with a smile. Watching the bustling staff, Shinobu sighed.

"What I'm doing isn't enough. I'll have to find a solution soon."

Removing her shoes, the fatigue of her recent mission hit her all at once.

But she couldn't rest yet. There weas work to be done in the laboratory—and someone she wanted to avoid seeing for now.

Just as she stepped onto the floor barefoot, a familiar voice called out from behind her.

"Shinobu, you're back?"

It was Ren.
