Chapter 207: The Shadow Lurker
Boom!
Instantly, all the vengeful spirits rushing from the cave inside the hill were pulverized.
They vanished without leaving any traces behind.
Seeing this, all the guards sucked in a cold breath. Those at the Peak of Core Refining Realm had a lot of anticipation in their eyes.
The chamber had promised that power, and they couldn't wait to have it.
Standing tens of meters from the attacking range, Mo Jian was stunned by Elder Bai Delan's attacking power.
As a Rune Master, he believed their prowess lay in their rune mastery, but he was wrong.
As a Golden Core expert, their power was not something a mere Core Refining Realm could comprehend.
With half of the vengeful spirits flattened out, the guards breathed a sigh of relief and rushed toward the cave.
They couldn't miss such an opportunity. As long as they occupied the cave entrance, the vengeful spirits wouldn't have the chance of spreading.
Mo Jian and Lonely Spear took the lead as they rushed toward the caves. From the caves, another batch of Restless Phantoms and Wailing Revenants were already pouring out.
Slash! Slash!
Mo Jian arrived just in time to cut the vengeful spirit into two. Behind him, the Lonely Spear was a tad bit late.
"Young Master, you win this round, but you won't win the next batch that easily," he glanced at Mo Jian.
"We'll see about that…" Mo Jian responded with a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
Looking ahead, the cave tunnel was darker than usual, and the biting cold wind would make anyone shiver.
Although Core Refining warriors would not have any problem seeing in the darkness, Mo Jian did not like it.
He took out a Moon Orb and switched it on.
Instantly, the narrow path was illuminated, and they could see the incoming batch of vengeful spirits.
Without waiting for Mo Jian, Lonely Spear rushed forward and swung his spear.
Quickly, the quiet tunnel was filled with the sound of battle. Behind him, Mo Jian rushed to join the battle.
With Mo Jian and Lonely Spear leading the charge, the guards felt a lot of burden off their shoulders.
Meanwhile, in the darkness, a spectral blended perfectly with the dark, and its hollow eyes watched the carnage unfolding on the ground.
It stared for a moment before it averted its gaze and looked at the two humans in the sky.
Whoosh!
It disappeared from its position without leaving any traces behind. In the sky, Elder Bai and Elder Zhao waited patiently.
For the plan to work, Elder Zhao stood a couple of meters from Elder Bai. They stood casually without any obvious vigilance.
After the first strike, they expected an attack from the Shadow Lurker, but they got none.
This was unlike the rumor.
The Shadow Lurker was a terrifying spirit that would attack anything that threatened its existence.
Still, they maintained their façade while waiting for it to appear. They would have called this off if not for the never-ending Wailing Revenants.
For such a large troop of Wailing Revenants, there was bound to be a commander, and that would be the Shadow Lurker.
Suddenly, Elder Bai felt all the hair on his body stand on edge. His instinct was screaming of impending danger.
Without thinking, his body acted instinctively.
Around his body, runes materialized out of thin air. The runes lit up, pulsating with energy.
The temperature surged at an alarming speed, and steam appeared in the sky.
Standing a couple of feet from Elder Bai was a horrifying humanoid spectral. Its hands resembled a wolf's claw brimming with evil energy.
The sudden rise in temperature caught it off guard. It was preparing to deliver a killing strike, rip out the soul of its target, but the heat disrupted its action.
Slash!
Elder Zhao acted swiftly and swung his sword. Immediately, a bone-chilling sharpness covered the sky, targeting the Shadow Lurker.
The Shadow Lurker reacted swiftly, preparing to disappear into the shadow.
For the shadow was its domain.
Unfortunately, it encountered Elder Bai Delan, a terrifying rune master. He was so terrifying that his Golden Core was made of runes.
Before the Shadow Lurker could melt into darkness, a series of runes lunged at it at a breathtaking speed.
Screech!
A guttural screech escaped from the Shadow Lurker when the runes attacked its body and its escape was pulsed.
Bang!
That momentary delay was enough for Elder Zhao's sword strike to arrive just in time.
Screech!
It screeched in pain, and its spectral form flickered. However, it wouldn't be the terrifying Shadow Lurker if a single strike could kill it.
It recovered almost immediately and vanished with the darkness.
So it thought.
"Where is it?" Elder Zhao arrived just in time beside Elder Bai Delan.
This was their only chance to kill such a terrifying spirit.
"Behind you," Elder Bai replied with a grave voice.
Elder Zhao did not hesitate. He turned and struck.
Bang!
Screech!
From the darkness, the Shadow Lurker appeared, its spectral light dimmed. Before it could hide once again…
Slash! Slash!
Two more terrifying strikes were already on it.
It raised its claws to defend against the attack, but it was futile. The strike sent it flying and weakened its power.
Whoosh!
It vanished, blending with the darkness.
This was its innate ability and what made it fearsome.
Unfortunately…
"Your right…"
Before Elder Zhao could ask where it was, Elder Bai had already responded.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Swiftly, a barrage of attacks landed on the Shadow Lurker, forcing it out of its shadow.
Its once bright, terrifying figure turned, losing its fearsome presence.
It tried to hide again, but its speed was not as fast as at the beginning.
Thus, its speed was a tad bit slow.
Bang!
Another strike hit its body, sending it skidding, and its light dimmed considerably. Its body flickered as if it was going to vanish forever.
As a spectral, it was made of a body of energy, and if the energy were to be exhausted, it would vanish into thin air.
However, no matter how it tried to escape, it was discovered by Elder Bai Delan.
Elder Bai Delan's hand turned into its nemesis.
After dozens of attacks, the Shadow Lurker was finally killed.
"Huh! It's finally dead," Elder Bai exhaled in relief.
"Indeed, it's dead." Elder Zhao nodded, staring at the last spot where the Shadow Lurker was before it dissolved into nothingness.
Turning to look at Elder Bai Delan, Elder Zhao couldn't help but ask, "Elder Bai, how did you manage to discover it every time it tried to escape?"
Elder Bai smiled and responded, "I placed a beacon on it the first time it tried to attack me."
Beacon!
Elder Zhao was stunned. How was that possible? Besides, who would be so daring enough to place a beacon on a Shadow Lurker?
Elder Zhao decided not to think about it any longer. Just thinking of it would drive him crazy.
Elder Bai watched as Elder Zhao sighed continuously and couldn't help but feel a swell of pride in his heart.
'Runes should be flexible.' These were Mo Jian's words.
Since he knew they were up against the Shadow Lurker, he had been thinking of ways for them to gain an upper hand against it.
Thus, he came up with runes that would serve as a beacon when attached to the Shadow Lurker.
And his approach worked more smoothly than he expected.
With the Shadow Lurker killed, they descended to the ground to provide protection where needed.
Meanwhile, inside the cave, Mo Jian and Lonely Spear were still on their killing rampage.
Mo Jian's Heavenly Thunder Slash had broken through from the initial stage to the Greater Success stage.
With the breakthrough, a single strike from him could kill three to four Wailing Revenants at the same time.
Lonely Spear, who was only a couple of feet from him throughout the battle, could not believe his eyes. Although Mo Jian was powerful, killing the vengeful spirits with ease…
This was on another level.
His attack contained the power of a Peak Core Refining Realm warrior while he was only an Intermediate Core Refining Warrior.
If he was not present, he wouldn't have believed someone could improve that much in a single battle.
Unknown to Lonely Spear's thoughts, Mo Jian continued to cut all the Restless Phantoms and Wailing Revenants on his path.
He had already lost count of how many Wailing Revenants he had killed. At the beginning, he was wary of the Wailing Revenants.
Their chains were difficult to handle.
But as the battle continued, all his wariness disappeared, combined with the competitive spirit of Lonely Spear.
He threw himself into the battle.
Every slash increased his comprehension of the Heavenly Thunder Slash. Before he knew it, his only thought was to improve his sword technique.
Bang!
His sword descended and cleaved the last Wailing Revenant, and the netherworld gateway appeared before them.
Taking a deep breath, he stared at the gateway that seemed like a pathway to the abyss and felt a cold shiver down his spine.
From the gateway, he could see another batch of vengeful spirits coming out.
He looked at Lonely Spear and said, "You will handle the vengeful spirits while I handle the ancient formation."
