I’m Playing as a Nun.

Chapter 3 - Giving fish to a cat. (3)

As expected, the village was not just a mess but completely devastated.
The fishy smell of blood wafting from everywhere viciously pricks the tip of my nose.

“……”

However, for some reason, the demons that should be rampaging throughout the village are not visible.
Far from the cries of demons, even their shadows can’t be seen, and only a strange silence ominously hangs over the place.

– Thump, thump

It was a tragic sight that made it possible to guess what had happened here, even at a glance.
This tragic scene tells how terrible and frightening it is to coexist with demons and monsters.

“Whew—.”

Originally, it should have been a greatly upsetting situation.
But I didn’t even bat an eye at this terrible sight for some reason.
Rather, I leisurely inhaled the fishy smell of blood wafting from all directions as if it were the scent of flowers, and I even enjoyed the current atmosphere with a much more excited feeling than usual.

“Ah.”

Long after I set foot in the village, I realized that fact.
I belatedly shuddered at the fact that I was so absorbed in it that I couldn’t even recognize it myself.
I didn’t even notice that the feeling was so natural that I could calmly accept and enjoy this sight.

“Come to think of it… The reason I came here seems to be roughly similar, too.”

My humanity seems to be naturally fading away like flowing water at some point.
At this moment, I clearly feel the fact that my race is a vampire.

“No matter how much I pretend to live like a human, I can’t help the characteristics of my race…”

While wandering around the eerily quiet village for a long time, I suddenly noticed a place by chance.
It was a narrow and dark alley nestled between buildings.
At the end of it, small and petty green fellows were hugging each other and trembling like aspen trees.

“Gyagyagyagyak—!!!”

“……”

It was goblins. They screamed in surprise as soon as they saw me.
They frantically scratch the blocked wall and scream out pitiful and pathetic cries at the top of their lungs.

“Gyagyagyagyak—!!!!”

“Gyagyak—!!”

It was very suspicious that the goblins were having seizures, even though I didn’t do anything in particular.
Why were the demons that succeeded in the attack hiding in a group in such a narrow and dirty alley?
Moreover, without a single “trophy.”

– Thump

As I slowly entered the alley, the goblins’ seizures intensified even more.
Goblins that now unhesitatingly reveal their savage madness, even causing internal strife.
Even though such a commotion was happening, thanks to the demons who still hadn’t shown themselves in the village, I was able to belatedly realize an important fact.

“… You’re afraid of me?”

After neatly sucking up every single drop of blood from the goblins gathered in front of my eyes,
I muttered quietly to myself with an enlightened expression.

The inner thoughts of the demons that I couldn’t realize until now because I was mainly doing surprise attacks in the forest.
It’s not necessary to know, but the fact that demons are afraid of me is quite useful information.

The reaction shown by the goblins may just be an instinctive fear.
But if their fear stemmed from the recognition of my existence, it means that my situation is quite advantageous, at least in this world.

“By the way… There’s really no one.”

Early dawn.
After returning to the church, I stayed up all night and calmly recalled what had happened in the village.

I wandered the village with a glimmer of hope, looking for anyone alive.
But the only thing I found was frightened demons.
No matter where I looked in the village, I couldn’t find any trace of a living person.

“……”

As I returned to the church with such complicated feelings,
The first thing that caught my eye was the three children huddled up and sleeping side by side on the bench.

A sigh of dismay automatically escaped as soon as I saw the children sleeping soundly without knowing anything.
For some reason, it heavily weighed down my whole body.

“…Amen.”

Muttering that word softly, I slowly got up from my seat.
Then, picking up the old nun’s habit that I had roughly put on the front bench, I unhesitatingly took off the equipment I was wearing in the game.

Although it was a dirty cloth that was torn here and there and had a lot of dust on it,
I thought there was no outfit that suited me better than this right now.

Because this place is not the world inside the game.

“Mmm, mmm… Sister…?”

Ellie, who woke up from sleep first at the sound I made.
She is rubbing one eye with a half-asleep face.

“Where have you been…?”

“It seems I moved too noisily. It’s okay to sleep some more.”

Ellie slowly shook her head.

“Yesterday, Aizen said to leave early in the morning, so don’t oversleep.”

“Hmm, where exactly is your destination?”

“No… He just said it’s a place across the river…”

“I see.”

The children seem to have exchanged many stories while I was away.
Led by Aizen, who is only 10 years old, they somehow dealt with the situation with an unexpected extraordinary drive.

“By the way, you really were a nun… That outfit suits you much better than the one you wore yesterday.”

Ellie, who belatedly came to her senses, slowly began to sparkle her eyes, looking at me in a nun’s habit.

“Was the outfit I wore yesterday strange?”

“Oh, no… Rather than strange, it was an unfamiliar outfit, so it was a bit…”

“Well, I’m only going to wear this from now on, so it won’t happen anymore.”

“…But we have to leave this church today…”

“That’s right. That was your plan.”

– Clap—!!!

With those words, I vigorously clapped my hands together.
It echoed in the silent church, forcing Aizen and Iris, who were sleeping soundly, to wake up.

“Wh-what?!”

“Huh, huh…?”

Aizen and Iris, who almost woke up startled, began to hastily look around with half-asleep faces.
Eyelids that are still half-closed.
They looked puzzled and confused, as if a bomb had fallen nearby.

“Now, everyone. I heard everything. You said you’re going to leave this church today and head to the village across the river?”

“Yes…?”

“It’s a very brave and admirable idea, but I’m not sure if that’s really the best choice.”

“Wh-what do you suddenly…”

“Putting aside the danger, even if you luckily ask for help, it might already be too late, or the situation might get worse.”

I couldn’t bring myself to say that all the villagers had been massacred.
Considering the shock that fact would cause the children, it felt like even bringing it up would be an unforgivable act.

I could only quietly inhale and speak to the children in the most roundabout way possible.

“So, how about staying here until you grow up to some extent?”

I couldn’t ignore the children trying to embark on a dangerous journey with an unknown outcome.
I thought I should be responsible for their safety until these children can fully think for themselves.

Although I am a vampire, that cannot be a reason to neglect these children.

“Sister… Did you perhaps visit the village while we were asleep…?”

However, despite going this far, Aizen seemed to understand the meaning of my words right away.
The trembling of anxiety was evident in his voice, and despair began to settle in his flashing eyes.

“…Yes.”

“Then… our village is already…”

An awkward silence fills the quiet church.
As the uncomfortable silence continued, Aizen heavily sat down and slowly began to frown.

“M-mom… dad…”

“Hic…”

The sad crying sounds of Ellie and Iris that follow.
It was a situation where even I had no choice but to soften my heart, but nevertheless, I had to ignore my current feelings.

“Aizen, lift your head now.”

“……”

At my resolute words, Aizen hesitated for a moment, then laboriously raised his head.
Aizen’s eyes were still filled with despair and confusion, and that gaze weighed down my heart even more.

“To those who call my name, I will always be with them.”

A verse from the Bible that I muttered quietly in the heavy atmosphere.
This was the only thing that came to mind right away.
There were more fancy words later, but with just a brief look yesterday, I couldn’t recall the content written after that at all.
I had to somehow manage the rest with improvisation.

“I must have told you. The fact that we met like this is probably thanks to the guidance of the goddess.”

“S-sister…”

“I can’t turn a blind eye to the young lambs guided by Goddess Pael… Paellia…”

The words may seem light, but they contain my determination.
I wanted to give hope to the children who fell into despair, and I hoped that the words of the goddess’s guidance would relieve them a little.

“My name is Levinia Fallen Grace. As the only nun in this church, I will follow the goddess’s will and protect these children no matter what happens.”

It’s true that it started from compassion.
I have no intention of denying that.
I have never experienced anything like this, and I don’t know the sorrow of losing my parents at all.

However, even though my body was a vampire, my mind was that of a complete human, so I could understand the sorrow these children experienced to some extent.
Because my existence itself was not corrupt.

“Heuuk…!”

“Waahh…”

“Hic, hic…”

“It’s okay, everyone. Cry your heart out in my arms…”

Just as I was about to hold the crying children in my arms and slowly calm the situation,
Suddenly, three transparent windows appeared one after another in front of my eyes.
