Chapter 12: The Valparian Roxy
Ignus stood before the bound Heretics, a mischievous glint in his eye and a smirk playing on his lips. "Now, my dear cultists," he began, his tone dripping with mock seriousness, "I'm going to need some answers. And trust me, you don't want to see me when I'm serious."
One of the Heretics scoffed, trying to appear brave despite the fear in his eyes. "You can't intimidate us, adventurer. We serve a higher power."
Ignus chuckled, stepping closer to the Heretics. "Oh, I'm not trying to intimidate you," he said, his voice low and menacing. "I'm just stating the facts. You see, I have a little trick up my sleeve." Ignus raised his hand, summoning a small flame that danced on his fingertips. "And if I don't get the answers I want, things might get... hot around here."
A'moi, who had been watching the scene unfold with amusement, burst into laughter. "Oh, come on, Ignus," he chuckled, wiping a tear from his eye. "You're not actually going to set them on fire, are you?"
Ignus winked at A'moi before turning his attention back to the Heretics. "Well, I suppose I could try a different approach," he mused, pacing back and forth in front of them. "Perhaps a bit of... psychological warfare?"
He stopped in front of one of the Heretics, leaning in close with a sly grin. "Tell me, my friend," he whispered, his voice laced with fake sympathy, "how do you feel about spiders? Big, hairy, venomous spiders crawling all over you, with no way to escape?"
The Heretic's eyes widened in terror, and Ignus could see the fear beginning to take hold. "Or maybe," Ignus continued, moving on to the next Heretic, "you'd prefer a nice, relaxing bath. In acid."
A'moi doubled over with laughter, clutching his stomach. "Oh, this is too good," he gasped between laughs. "I can't believe they're actually falling for it."
As Ignus continued his comedic threats, the Heretics' resolve began to crumble. One of them, unable to contain his fear any longer, burst into tears. "Please," he sobbed, "we'll tell you everything. Just please don't hurt us."
Ignus's expression softened, and he straightened up, his demeanor returning to its usual jovial self. "There, there," he said, patting the Heretic on the shoulder. "No need to cry. We just want to know why you were trying to summon that dark entity."
The Heretics, now more cooperative, began to reveal their motives and plans. Ignus and A'moi listened intently, knowing that their encounter with the Heretics had just taken an unexpected turn.
As they left the cave, the Heretics in tow, Ignus couldn't help but chuckle to himself. "Who knew interrogating cultists could be so entertaining?" he mused, earning a hearty laugh from A'moi.
Little did they know, their encounter with the Heretics was just the beginning of a series of adventures that would test their wit, courage, and friendship in ways they never imagined.
As Ignus and A'moi prepared to leave the city, they realized they needed to return to the Adventurers Guild to hand off the gem they had retrieved. Turning to the Valparian, Ignus smiled warmly.
"Would you like to come with us?" he asked. "We're heading back to the guild, and then we can help you with your village."
The Valparian nodded gratefully, her fox ears perking up. "Thank you," she said softly. "I would appreciate the company."
As they made their way back to the guild, Ignus couldn't help but admire the Valparian's graceful stride. She moved with a quiet elegance, her tail swishing gently behind her.
Upon arriving at the guild, Ignus and A'moi were greeted warmly by the guild master. Ignus handed over the gem, explaining how they had retrieved it from the Heretics. The guild master was impressed and thanked them for their efforts.
"Now, about your village," Ignus said, turning to the Valparian. "Lead the way."
The Valparian led Ignus and A'moi out of the city and towards her village. Along the way, they chatted and joked, lightening the mood despite the serious task ahead
