Chapter 51: Yangshan Town
"On this sunny day, our Yangshan Town welcomes its 1,420th visitor. Let's cheer for the guest's arrival!"
Amidst the excited and friendly cheers, Yun You and the other two instinctively opened their eyes.
After some time had settled, the previously glaring white light, washed by time, gradually softened, like a thick curtain being slowly pulled away.
When it slowly faded away, Yun You and the others saw the scene before them clearly.
"...!"
They were stunned.
For at this moment, what appeared before them was not the bloody altar they had imagined, filled with powerful boss monsters and mountains of corpses; nor was it a larger and deeper mine that compelled one to ceaselessly go underground.
Here, there was only a small town.
A small town bathed in bright sunlight… full of a peaceful atmosphere.
The first sight was a series of stone houses built from grey slate, mostly one or two stories tall, compact and sturdy, with only a few special facilities like "lighthouses" and "windmills" reaching over ten meters in height.
The generally low buildings allowed Yun You to clearly see the layout of the streets and houses.
The town was not very large, probably no bigger than a soccer field, with several neatly arranged streets, housing around two to three hundred stone homes, and a population unlikely to exceed 1,000 people.
The space surrounding the town was quite expansive; beyond a gravel path lay a green forest encircling the town, where the trees grew exceptionally tall, generally over twenty meters high, appearing like circles of brown-green giants encircling the whole town and completely isolating it from the outside world.
Though the overall environment felt a hint oppressive, the townspeople mostly maintained friendly smiles, whether greeting or working, displaying great politeness and conveying a comforting feel.
They wore simple clothes made of coarse linen, with straw sandals, holding old-fashioned rural tools like wooden hoes, black iron pitchforks, and small sickles, with goods carried in baskets and wooden boxes woven from branches.
There was not a trace of modern technology on these villagers—no phones, no electronic watches, and certainly no brain-implanted chips or common prosthetic body facial decorations.
This made the three in hazmat suits stand out like aliens, quite conspicuous and out of place.
However, Yun You didn't care about this.
After briefly observing, she immediately turned around, looking behind...
But there was no familiar mine there, only an endless forest.
"It's a teleportation..."
Yun You understood.
The previous steel gate was actually the entrance to a Death Domain space or a Death-like Domain space.
The Death Domain's ability to warp space and time, transporting people to other places, isn't too far-fetched.
Yet, Yun You couldn't quite grasp why the metal door teleported her here, and just where was this place?
Yun You took out her phone and glanced at it.
To her surprise, in that brief instant, she actually saw a single bar of signal.
Though the strength was low, with a bit of fiddling, she might be able to send some text messages out.
More importantly...
Having a signal proved this wasn't some Otherworld.
When they first entered the town, the voice in Yun You's ear mentioned this place as... a town from the New Calendar year 1899.
1899, that was nearly 200 years in the past.
Back then, Nest City No. 3 had just been established, and Yun You's great-grandparents weren't even born.
If the Death Domain did indeed transport the three back 200 years, it would be a bit out of control.
Fortunately, the emergence of the electronic signal dispelled Yun You's concern.
But just when the little girl planned to send a couple of messages to Old Jin, the signal inexplicably vanished.
From then on, Yun You could no longer connect to that single bar of signal, no matter if she tried fixing it with a chip or used the good old method of hitting it, she remained in a "no signal" state.
This insignificant signal just vanished into thin air, as if it had never existed.
"Strange... Could something be interfering with the signal source?"
Yun You slightly furrowed her brow, intending to have Frost Moon check for any electronic devices nearby...
"Good day to everyone!"
But just then, a kindly old man in a gray robe walked out from the town, directly approaching the three.
The old man's face was calm, with wave-like wrinkles between his brows, seemingly narrating the long years he had experienced, his green eyes deeply set in slightly closed sockets, exuding a soothing warmth.
Obviously, he didn't know Yun You and the others, yet he was friendly to them as a "host".
"The three of you are new here, and may not be very familiar with Yangshan Town?"
The old man introduced himself with a smile: "If you don't mind, let me guide you three."
"I will briefly introduce the history of Yangshan Town and provide you with accommodations."
"I am the mayor of Yangshan Town, my name is..."
"..."
For some reason, when mentioning his name, the old man suddenly stumbled, whether due to senility or some other reason.
In any case, after pausing for a few seconds, he came to his senses and continued: "My name is Kong Xian, you can just call me Mayor Kong."
"May I know how I should address you all?"
Mayor Kong's words had a hint of dialect flavor, and his phrasing wasn't typical of modern-day speech.
Fortunately, the dialect wasn't archaic, allowing the three to manage to understand it.
However, they didn't give a direct response.
"Chica, what do you think?"
To prevent outsiders from hearing, Jack deliberately lowered his voice and quietly asked using the intercom in his helmet: "What do you make of this mayor... Any signs of deception?"
"No..."
Yun You shook her head.
Neither the Apprentice Death God's perception in her mind nor the Analysis Chip could tell Yun You anything other than that the old man before her was just an ordinary human.
It should be said it wasn't only the old man; the other villagers were the same—genuine human beings, not monsters like vengeful corpses.
The only slightly odd thing was that from a facial perspective, Mayor Kong Xian and the majority of villagers were actually from the Western Hemisphere.
They had blonde hair, blue eyes, and more prominent features, appearing rougher and more open compared to the more delicate features typical of those from the Eastern Hemisphere.
Yet they had Eastern Hemisphere names and mannerisms.
Though Yun You and her chip both pointed this out, this small detail alone wasn't enough to reveal any issues.
"Let's follow along and see if we can glean any information from him."
The little girl instructed quietly, then gave a nod to Mayor Kong.
"We'll trouble the mayor then."
She imitated the greeting manner from those old wuxia movies, giving the old man a bow.
"Please introduce us to this town first."
"No problem."
Mayor Kong grinned, making a "please" gesture, with a somewhat standard motion.
"Then the three of you, follow me."
