Chapter 366: Lillian's Mana?
Lillian heard the captain's question and found herself rooted to the ground. In the game, if you were to ask about the man's eye, you would be able to find out your current mana level.
Usually, if your mana was subpar, he would just explain what his eye would do before swiftly leaving. However, if the player were to build up their character and achieve a high amount of mana, they would be provided with both more attention and information about the world's inner workings.
This information wouldn't be given out by the academy, since the teachers would expect you to know it to a degree, even if it was a basic level.
It was, after all, an academy made for nobles. And those types of individuals were most likely tutored at a young age.
At the chance to relive a game scene, there was no way Lillian wouldn't take the chance. Lillian would also be able to renew her memory on the topic, which was always a bonus.
"I have a degree of knowledge about it." Lillian turned to Millis.
Millis looked back and into the eyes of the girl, finding them to be glinting at her for something. At first, she raised an eyebrow, but then, her lips widened into a small 'o'.
"Ah... Well, uh. I'm not that smart on the subject. Could ya tell us about it, sir?"
"Hm..."
The captain glanced between the two, rubbing his chin as he pondered their words. Once formatting his words a little, he opened his mouth and spoke:
"Commonly, you may know that we humans are different from monsters in various ways. And with that, it brings about how we store mana differently compared to them.
"Unlike them, we can restore our mana after usage, one of the many advantages we have over them. However, everyone's rate of restoration is different depending on certain factors.
"It could be a biological factor, a flaw factor, or even a talent or potential factor. These examples can also affect how much mana we can store at the beginning."
Zeke reached into his pocket and pulled out a fancy silver lighter.
Click.
Once he flicked open the lid, he held his thumb on a button placed on the side of the lighter, causing it to erupt into a narrow but sharp flame.
The flame reached about a metre tall, causing it to look more like a translucent hot stick with a handle rather than just a flame.
He then moved a separate finger over a scroller on the side of the lighter, causing the flame to shorten slowly.
"Mana appears in the form of a blue-purplish flame wrapped around an entity's body. And it is the size of this flame that reveals how much a person can store.
"The average first-tier mage would have mana only 20-30 centimetres wrapped around their body. Talents and prodigies reaching a few metres. Once you reach the next tier, your volume of mana would undoubtedly double at most."
Flipping up his eyepatch again, he scrutinised the size of Lillian's "flame" and couldn't help but sigh with envy, "And you're beyond that..."
The flame of the lighter shot back to its starting height.
"The mana currently wrapped around you is currently around 10 metres in height, roughly... If we were to compare, yours is at least five times as much as mine. I can't fathom how lucky your circumstances were."
Lillian gave a satisfied hum at this, internally grinning broadly inside her heart. She deserved to have that much. Although it was through the help of... drugs... She did have to suffer through that experience.
Lillian watched as Zeke slowly turned her face back to Millis, who gave a casual wave back. The captain's face slowly paled over time, darkening as he lowered his eyepatch in a calm but shaky manner.
He put away his lighter and stated:
"Your ladies truly have exceptional potential in this field... I truly am envious. And I assume both of you two are at the first tier?"
Lillian glanced at Millis, who glanced back at her. They smiled wryly as they looked back and answered:
"Well, we're actually in the second tier."
"Ye, what she said."
"..." Zeke stared at the two silently, his face calm and taciturn—unchanging. However, his eyes were expressing something different as the centre of his pupils gaped at what he had just heard.
The captain raised a fist to his mouth and coughed into it.
"I-... I see... I'm glad to know there are other Disciple Tier mages in this town." Zeke then held a hand towards the now-arriving elevator, "The elevator had now arrived. I'll be sure to let the manager know about your deeds in good words."
After hearing that they could leave, Lillian and Millis quickly caught a ride back to the surface. But once arriving back up, they were met with a group of miners.
Familiar ones.
They were the ones who were working inside the cavern. But apart from them were the miners; both Lillian and Millis worked for a couple of hours.
To the side, a gruff miner dropped his tool and pushed past his colleague, stomping his way over to them in a scolding manner as he hissed:
"I thought I told you two not to go down any deeper? Didn't you two listen to what the boss said as well?"
Putting on her usual innocent smile, Lillian raised his hands with a tilt of her head and spoke in a cutesy and carefree voice:
"I quit. Ehe~"
Lillian strolled past the gruff man before respectfully pushing herself through the group of miners.
Watching this, Millis quickly came up with an excuse, "I, uh... Women, am I right?" She grinned awkwardly before stepping past the man and blowing a whistle.
Once Lillian had exited the mines and put back her uniform and helmet, she gave back her entry permit to the manager, who was still ignorant of what had gone on in the cavern.
"Are you coming back tomorrow?"
"Eh... It's just not for me, I guess..."
The manager nodded to her words, finding them reasonable. "That's fine. This isn't everyone's thing, after all. Especially, when this line of work is more of a desperate way to bring in income."
After leaving the site, Lillian waited for Millis outside, who strolled right up to her.
"Don't wanna work in the mines anymore?"
"Eh... Nah. Too dirty."
Lillian shook her head, getting a sighing nod from the Heroine, who pulled out her phone.
Once Millis turned on her screen, she found a notification received only just a minute ago. And as the Heroine read it, she couldn't help but snicker loudly enough that even Lillian got curious.
"Cat videos again?"
"H-huh?"
Millis raised her eyes to Lillian, making eye contact with the girl. The Heroine thought for a moment before stating, "Sounds like ya judgin' meh for that. But anyway, nah, but I guess she is a cat in ya eyes, though."
