Chapter 6 - Welcoming a New Sister
Upon hearing the maid’s words, we rushed to the birthing room in a flurry of activity.
Inside, we witnessed a mother, who I was seeing for the first time since my reincarnation, twisting in pain as she lay on the bed.
She was an attractive woman, her slightly wavy chestnut hair framing a slim figure.
Despite the agony etched on her face, her features held a certain endearing charm.
“Stay strong, Lady Yuna! Just a bit longer, hold on!”
The wet nurse clutched her hand, urging her to endure.
Father and Baran stood frozen in distress, observing the scene.
The first to react were the maid and I, who had arrived earlier.
I gently lowered the basket of Cool Summer Herbs and asked the maid,
“Can these be used to make medicine?”
“Yes, certainly.”
And so, we began grinding the herbs in a mortar within the room.
Seeing that the basket beside the mortar was already empty, it seemed they had already used up the Cool Summer Herbs.
Another mortar was available, so I joined the maid in grinding herbs.
Once the maid finished grinding, she strained the mixture to extract the liquid.
She then combined this liquid with the blue fluid from a bottle to create the medicine.
…I understand now, making medicine is surprisingly straightforward.
With a surprisingly clear mind, I contemplated the process.
With the medicine prepared, the maid approached the mother, holding a cup.
“Can you drink this?”
Perhaps due to the difficulty of speaking, the mother simply nodded, her face contorted in pain.
She lifted her head slightly, allowing the liquid to be administered.
This seemed to ease her breathing somewhat and relaxed her expression a little.
Observing this, I followed the same procedure, crafting the medicine and approaching my mother.
“Mother, I’ll give you some more to drink. Hang in there.”
Despite her evident discomfort, my mother managed a slight smile.
Emulating the maid, I raised my head and administered the medicine.
The medicine took effect swiftly, calming her breathing and completely easing her expression.
I was relieved that the Cool Summer Herbs were of help.
Feeling a sense of relief, I sat down with a sigh.
At that moment, the wet nurse exclaimed,
“It’s coming!”
Father and Baran, now fully alert upon hearing her cry, looked around in a panic.
Yet, there was nothing further for us to do.
The rest depended solely on my mother’s determination.
And then…
The newborn was a girl.
A very precious little girl.
Witnessing the moment a new life entered the world was indeed quite moving.
My heart quivered with emotion.
As the wet nurse patted the baby’s back firmly, a cry filled the room.
It was a robust cry, as if capturing the essence of life.
I want to do my best for this child, my new sister.
I want to safeguard her smile.
Somewhere along the way, these sentiments had taken root within me.
My mother, likely due to exhaustion, closed her eyes and took slow, measured breaths.
I stood up, approached her, and held her hand.
Her eyes slowly opened as she felt my touch, and she gazed at me.
She didn’t say a word, but she bestowed a warm smile upon me.
My past life family seemed distant.
At least, that was my impression of them.
I didn’t approve of my parents’ insistence on kendo, and at times, I even harbored resentment.
Yet, as I am now, I comprehend.
I can’t help but feel affection for them.
I can’t resist these feelings.
Breaking the silence, the maid made a request.
“Lord Barbaria, Baran-san, could you prepare a bit more medicine?”
Upon her request, both Father and Baran immediately began grinding the herbs.
Afterward, Mother, appearing weary yet determined, spoke with clarity.
“Let Benno choose a name for this child. Is that alright with you?”
“Uh, yeah. That’s fine.”
They might have already had a name in mind.
Yet, for some reason, they granted me the honor of naming her.
A name, huh…
After pondering for a moment, I suggested,
“How about Sakura?”
This choice likely reflected my own preferences.
I was partial to Japanese-style names.
Upon hearing it, Mother smiled gently and nodded.
“Hehe, I think it’s a wonderful name. You think so too, right?”
“Yeah, I think so too.”
And thus, my younger sister – Sakura was born.
While I would attend school in the capital two years from now, meaning I wouldn’t be by her side for long, even during the brief two years we would share, I felt an undeniable bond forming between us.
