chapter 21
The Three Little Pigs (2)
The pack of wolves walked towards us. Not just any wolves, but ones in spotless suits without a speck of dust. The wolf from the Three Little Pigs was depicted as being driven by appetite, but the wolves in front of me felt intelligent.
One of the wolves, who seemed to be the leader, was even wearing glasses.
The wolf with glasses tilted his head as if puzzled while looking at us.
“Strange. There are three of you. And humans at that. The boss wanted a plump pig lady, so what’s going on?”
Alice pointed her mace at the wolf with glasses and said,
“What are you babbling about, you beast? I thought it was strange that there was a strong smell of blood since earlier. You’ve been hiding like a pervert, haven’t you?”
“What, what’s going on?”
In response to my question, Alice grinned, showing her teeth.
“What do you mean, we’ve been properly backstabbed. Can’t you tell just by looking?”
[It seems like they were planning to sell us out to the wolves]
Sell us out? Sure, they looked like intelligent wolves in suits, but that didn’t make the atmosphere any friendlier. The air of the scene still felt threatening and tense, sending chills down my spine.
It was like looking at gangsters in suits.
The wolf with glasses lifted his glasses with a sharp claw and said,
“Such foul-mouthed humans. Is any of you the pig’s mother?”
“Mom? Hahaha! Did you hear what that guy just said? He called us the pig’s mom!”
[What nonsense. Do we look like moms?]
The wolf muttered with its arms crossed.
“Hmm, well, it doesn’t matter. Sometimes it’s okay to eat humans as a delicacy.”
Something about their words was chilling. I glanced at the excited Alice and the wary Ariel, then looked back at the pack of wolves. Since we could communicate, maybe we could resolve this through conversation? I cautiously gathered my courage.
“Excuse me, may I ask who you are and why you have come here?”
“Well, it’s not a difficult question, so I’ll tell you. We are employees of Wolf Company. We came here to collect a product from the pig.”
“Is that product us, by any chance?”
The wolf stroked its chin.
“That’s right. Originally, we agreed on the pig’s mother, but it seems the pig didn’t want to sell his mother. Instead, he prepared you as the product.”
“Um, but we are not products.”
“No, you are products.”
The bespectacled wolf bared its teeth, capable of tearing my tender flesh in an instant, and drooled.
“A delicacy product at that! Guys, we’ll taste one and take the other two!”
“Yes, boss!”
Is this for real? So we were tricked by the pig and are about to be trafficked. Damn that pig! Selling us out to the wolves!
I growled lowly as I watched the wolves approach us with light movements.
Sharp claws like blades, a body and muscles much larger than an adult man. And agile movements to boot.
Wolves with superior physical abilities compared to humans. Could humans really win against multiple wolves, not just one? Here, the only weapon we had was the mace Alice held. No, if you count the sickle I could barely wield, we had two.
If we had ranged weapons like guns or bows, it might be different. But facing a pack of over twenty wolves with close combat weapons was not easy. No matter how strong Alice was, I couldn’t imagine us winning against them.
The threat posed by the wolf pack felt deadly.
Elise looked at my face and burst into laughter as if she found it amusing.
“Kya ha ha ha ha! Honey, are you scared? You don’t look so good. Don’t worry. This big sister will cook them up deliciously. Have you ever tried wolf meat? It’s surprisingly flavorful.”
[What nonsense! I can handle this alone! Prince, I will protect you!]
Ariel gestured in the air, and droplets of water gathered to form a trident made of water. Ariel grasped the water trident as if it were solid, not liquid, and aimed it at the wolves.
“Hmm, do you think you can catch a wolf with that?”
[I will catch more than you, so stay out of my way.]
“Heh~ Shall we bet on it? Who catches more?”
[Fine. I’ll make you regret it!]
Ariel charged forward and threw the trident at the leading wolf. The trident flew through the air like a bullet and hit the wolf’s chest.
“Yelp!”
The wolf, making a sound like a hurt puppy, fell backward and twitched slightly before going limp.
As one wolf was taken down in an instant, the faces of the wolves that had been moving actively showed confusion. And a huge shadow loomed over one of them.
A heavy, massive mace.
“Huh?”
Crunch. Elise swung the mace, crushing the wolf’s head, and the large body slammed into the ground.
“Kya ha ha ha ha! This feels amazing!”
Elise burst into a maniacal laugh and repeatedly struck the wolf’s corpse with the mace. The faces of the wolves, who witnessed their comrade being brutally killed, showed fear.
Hmm, it was an unnecessary worry.
“What are you all doing! The opponents are just three weak humans! Finish them off quickly!”
Unable to bear it any longer, the bespectacled wolf’s sharp rebuke snapped the wolves back to their senses, and they bared their teeth once more. But fear had already been imprinted in their hearts.
As Elise hummed a tune and approached, the wolves flinched and hesitated, and in that fleeting moment, the pot shattered, spilling its contents. With her red eyes gleaming, Elise searched for her next prey, causing the wolves to break out in a cold sweat.
“Arghhh!”
On the other side, Ariel was wielding a trident made of water like a sorcerer, skewering the wolves.
“Monsters! They’re not ordinary humans!”
“Ahhh! Spare me! Please don’t smash my head!”
“Now~ stay still. Otherwise, it’ll hurt~”
Now, the wolves seemed pitiable. In the midst of the ruthless slaughter, I stood alone, doing nothing. Well, not exactly nothing. I had my scythe out just in case, but no one bothered me.
“Look at that giant scythe!”
“That guy must be a monster too! If we get close, we’ll be sliced in half!”
I was just a weak boy with a scythe, but fortunately, they were mistaken.
Before long, the number of wolves had dwindled to less than half. The remaining wolves were fleeing for their lives. If I were a wolf, I’d rather die cleanly by Ariel’s hand than be turned into minced meat by Elise’s mace.
“Wait!!!!”
At that moment, a booming voice erupted from the bespectacled wolf’s mouth. The fleeing wolves and the slaughtering Elise and Ariel all stopped in their tracks.
The bespectacled wolf strode towards us.
“Bro, are you finally going to show us? The berserker transformation when you take off your glasses!”
“Show them, bro! Show those monsters what a real wolf is!”
The wolves cheered fervently for the bespectacled wolf. He approached silently, and Elise and Ariel stood ready to face him.
“Heh~ you’re bigger than the others. This is going to be fun. I can’t wait!”
[Even that guy is a one-hit kill for me. Bring it on!]
The bespectacled wolf puffed out his chest and exhaled a rough breath. It was a tense, explosive situation. The subordinate wolves and I watched with pounding hearts, like spectators.
The wolf’s paw twitched. Alice’s mace and Ariel’s trident reacted instantly. As the weapons aimed for the wolf’s head and chest, the wolf’s massive figure suddenly disappeared. No, to be precise, it was below.
“I’m sorry!!!”
“Huh?”
The wolf knelt down and bowed his head in apology. The audience, who had been expecting a fierce battle, and our faces all had the same question mark.
“We apologize for recklessly threatening you!”
“B-boss!?”
“What are you doing! If you want to live, bow your heads immediately!”
“Y-yes, sir!”
The remaining subordinates followed the bespectacled wolf and bowed their heads immediately. They had charged in arrogantly, but now they were lowering their tails, something we never expected. I couldn’t tell if they were smart or just cowardly.
“We, the lowly ones, dared to act against the great warriors. Please, show mercy with your generous hearts!”
At the bespectacled wolf’s apology, Alice, with a disappointed face, placed her foot on the back of his head.
“Oh~ This is boring. Huh? Come on, fight back a little.”
[Pathetic cowards. But their judgment was good. If they hadn’t surrendered, they would all be dead. What should we do, Prince?]
Alice put her arm around my shoulder and smiled.
“These guys are so annoying. Let’s pull out all their claws and teeth as punishment so they can never act up again. And let’s cut off one of their hind legs and roast it. How about it? Doesn’t that sound fun?”
