Chapter 76: The Final Battle (3)
The intense magical energy emanating from the center of the academy seemed to have drawn in every demonic creature in the vicinity.
Goblins, orcs, wild wolves, horned boars, and even slimes.
All sorts of miscellaneous demons gathered without distinguishing between strong and weak. They quickly began to converge on the center of the Academy, ready to destroy it at a moment’s notice.
Indeed, this last great invasion has destroyed the Academy beyond repair.
At this rate, we would surely meet the same disastrous end as in my previous life.
Moreover, it wasn’t just the demons that roamed the darkened academy.
“Garrrr….”
“Keeeeeeek! Keeeeek!”
“Keruk! Keruk!”
The further I went into the center of the magic power, the more hideous demons began to appear, each with a different form than the others.
I had felt this when I first encountered them in my previous life.
They were clearly created by dark magic, so their appearance and personalities were strong and ferocious.
“Keeeeee!”
“KEEEEK!!!”
The four or five hell imps that had been slashed by the holy sword turned into dark magic upon death and scattered.
I have experience dealing with these creatures in my previous life, and I have a holy sword that is effective against hell demons, so I should be able to kill them without too much trouble.
I wonder how long an ordinary student would last against a Hell Imp or Hell Watchdog.
Certainly, from my memories of my previous life, they didn’t last long.
One by one, they’d be knocked down by the creatures as they fled, or their clumsy attempts at strength would be counterattacked and they’d die.
The fact that they hadn’t gone home yet, even on the last day of school at the academy, must have meant that they were that passionate about their studies.
Even such students could not easily deal with the hell demons I faced in my previous life.
…Perhaps I can’t expect the same effect in this lifetime.
The only things I changed when I returned to the past were the characters centered on me and Ariana. The effects on the other students would have been far less significant.
The only thing that will save the most lives is defeating the resurrected Demon King.
With that thought in mind, I advanced, slashing at the demons that stood in my way.
A familiar voice that I had heard many times in my previous life suddenly reached my ears.
“Row 1, Wind Blade against the demon on the left! Row 2, Arcane Blast against the one on the right! Rows 3 through 6, deploy Flame Citadel to the left and right of your comrades!”
“””Yes!”””
The familiar voice of the Marquise barked out precise instructions to the other students.
With short replies from dozens of students, a thick citadel of flames rose in all directions from the voice.
This fire shield was not made of one or two people, but of five or six, and it had the power to kill any number of demons in one fell swoop.
Even the two most threatening infernal beasts were struck by the concentrated fire and scattered as they became enchanted.
“Miss Natalia….”
Ariana’s mouth spoke the name of the person I’d been visualizing in my head.
Marquise Natalia Frisseria, the second daughter of the Marquise of Frisseria and the most charismatic member of Sierra’s entourage.
Come to think of it, her presence was probably the only thing that prevented me from striking her down in my previous life.
Whenever loyalists would file a petition against Sierra for manipulating me like a puppet, Natalia would always take the role of mediating the negative public opinion.
Each time, she would be the one who would be the center of attention.
In the end, her presence kept Sierra by my side until the very end.
For better or for worse, she was a force to be reckoned with, a crocodile to Sierra.
In this lifetime, I’ve heard rumors that she switched sides with Ariana shortly before Sierra’s downfall.
There were times when I wondered if my fiancé might be adversely affected by her.
“First and second squads are resting, third and fourth squads are ready for magic!”
“””Yes!!!”””
From the looks of it, it wasn’t Ariana who was affected, but rather Natalia.
In such a short amount of time, she’s gathered most of the remaining students in the academy, forming a proper formation and showing that she’s not going to be pushed back even against a strong demon.
Perhaps in this lifetime, we can expect far fewer sacrifices.
I’m walking quickly past the student troop commanded by Natalia.
-BANG.
A small explosion sounded, and I could feel the ground around me tremble slightly.
“Could it be that a high-level demon has already appeared?”
“…I’m guessing, but it’s probably not a demon.”
Just when I wasn’t sure what Ariana’s words meant. There was a second explosion, and once again a huge fireball burst forth.
This time, the explosion came from a fairly close range, and it was immediately clear who it was.
“…….”
A quick glance in the direction of the sound revealed a lone Young Lady on the scene, channeling magic towards a group of demons.
Wearing the Academy’s robes, she must be a student.
When I thought back to the academy, I couldn’t think of anyone who could use fire magic of that power.
Although her magic may not have been as powerful as a Great Magic, it was still quite powerful among the higher magic.
If she was that good, there was no way she wouldn’t be rumored within the academy.
As I fixed my gaze on her, a huge fireball formed in an instant from her hand and flew at high speed towards the group of demons.
With a deafening sound, another huge crack was created in the ranks of the demonic horde.
…The magic that Young Lady used just now, was it a fireball?
Judging from the speed of its deployment, the way it was triggered, and the flow of magic power, it didn’t look like a high-level Fire Meteor or Giant Fireball. Rather, the thought flashed through my mind that it was an enhanced version of a lower-level fireball.
The question was whether it was theoretically possible.
It was possible for me and Kael to reduce the amount of magic consumed by stronger magic and use it as a substitute for weaker magic.
On the other hand, pouring more energy into a weaker magic to increase its power was something I’d never even heard of, except for Ariana.
“…….”
As I watched her for a moment, wondering what kind of secret she was hiding, the bag she was carrying opened and a vial was pulled out of it.
Without hesitation, the mysterious young lady drank the vial’s contents, and immediately struck a devastating blow to the demon army with her next spell.
…I think it has something to do with that drug.
“Alex, does Miss Sophia have any business with you?”
“…Lady Sophia, that’s her?”
As I stood on the edge, watching the mysterious young lady use her magic, a rather unexpected name came out of Ariana’s mouth.
Viscountess Sophia Kylie.
Though I had never met her in my previous life, I had heard rumors of her.
One of Sierra’s closest confidants, the Viscountess doubled as a hostess for her tea parties, embezzling club dues to enrich herself.
I heard that she got addicted to the fictitious science of alchemy, but in the end, she didn’t get any results and was caught embezzling money.
This led to her disgraceful expulsion from the Academy, just one semester away from graduation.
Her expulsion was the final nail in the coffin of the Kylie family’s already troubled business but judging by the power of Lady Sophia magic now, it seems that she’s done her alchemy right.
Like Natalia, I knew Sophia as someone who had switched to Ariana’s side.
The two were nothing more than a thief and an embezzler when they were by Sierra’s side, but as soon as they became Ariana’s people, they transformed into a commander and an alchemist.
It was one of those moments that convinced me that the old saying that swords and pens are only as good as their user was not wrong.
“I can vouch for the effectiveness of her potions, I’ve used them myself, and they definitely work.”
“…Seeing as how Lady Sophia has changed so much, you must’ve had something to do with it.”
“It must have been her talent, not mine, because I only gave her the slightest nudge to allow it to blossom.”
That little bit of help, that little bit of talent, would be Ariana’s greatest gift.
“I think Miss Sophia can probably hold this place on her own, so we should move quickly, Alex.”
“Yeah, we better hurry.”
After witnessing another future altered by her in a place I didn’t recognize, I hurried to the Demon King, which was not far away.
It was time to do what only I could do, what no one else could do.
