I, The Son of Zeus

Chapter 3: Chapter One - Rebirth Part III

*Narration*

[Change of view to third person]

Dante walked across the lawn, his sword was still a bit heavy but he knew how to handle it so that its weight would hit his opponent and not him.

Today was a moonless night, which left him in the dark if it weren't for his lantern, he was a young man with preparation after all.

Walking through the grass instead of the road where people usually came to run when the weather was good.

But that didn't matter to him, he was hunting monsters after all, and being on the trail would only make him an easy target instead of being the hunter.

Time then passed, seconds became minutes, until an hour since his entrance had already passed.

But not without results, after a detailed check he noticed that one of the trees had a claw cut.

Looking closer he could see a green moss growing on the tree several white bubbles were growing there.

'A monster spawn?' Dante thought he should destroy them to reduce the monster population but that would also make it harder to achieve the goal of coming here to fight monsters after all.

Walking a little closer to the lake which was quite large, he saw a group of creatures no taller than a meter and a half.

There were six of them, all grotesque in appearance, with gray skin, incredibly thin limbs, and bald heads. Their eyes and teeth gave the appearance of a sick smile.

Their necks were fat and fleshy and most of them carried rusty knives.

The largest of them carried a spear with several human skulls, he wore a cape making it difficult for Dante to see him.

'Tsk... six no archers, without much protection, I can kill the first one from here but I'll have to be quick, but that biggest one could be a problem... if there is magic and monsters can do it, it's better to be prepared for anything'

With his strategy already in mind, the demigod looked at the larger trees that hid him.

It was good that his eyes had already gotten used to the darkness, that would give him an advantage, it had been a good idea to dim the flashlight to the minimum.

But now it was time to turn it off and begin the massacre that awaited him, a smile adorned his lips for a second it was strange he thought.

Never in his old life would he have expected to be reincarnated in another world, especially in a fictional world.

But here he was a grown man with the body of a child of no less than ten years old and preparing to fight monsters.

'Life is crazy' He thought advancing with practicality.

He summoned his spear but not with lightning, instead took a deep breath and then threw the spear towards the first pale monster.

The spear lodged in its skull and it soon turned to dust.

The other monsters were now alert but for them, it was too late.

The son of Zeus ran towards him like a freight train. Two of the monsters tried to attack but a bolt of lightning slipped from Dante's fingers and one was electrocuted to complete muscular paralysis.

His ally didn't even notice when a golden sword pierced his body and he was turned to dust.

"One... two... three...." The demigod counted as he stabbed the paralyzed monster who also turned to dust.

There were three left and now the surprise had already been removed. With that, he would have to fight three monsters head-on, one of whom was dressed like a wizard or shaman.

"I have to be faster" The demigod grumbled and dodged one of the creatures that attacked, strangely fast for such thin limbs.

He soon had to block a blow of the rusty knife that was coming towards him.

A flash of light was seen as his eyes widened seeing a fireball the size of a basketball coming towards him.

"Son of a bitch!" Grabbing the monster by the head, Dante quickly threw the monster into the fire, leaving it to be consumed by the flames.

With practiced instincts, he savagely kicked the fast monster that tried to close in behind him.

He threw his sword at the creature, sticking it to the ground before turning around.

Without a weapon and alone against the monster with a staff, they both looked at each other for a second before another fireball came towards them.

Dante rolled to the side, seeing that his spear was still far from him and so was his sword.

The creature gave a grunt that Dante soon realized was a laugh.

'Interesting that you think I'm cornered.' Dante smiled at the monster before electricity surged in his right arm, thesensation of his body vibrating was something pleasant.

He waited for the creature to fire another but it didn't. The monster roared and attacked head-on with what looked like a bone blade or something you would see Egyptian or Mayan priests use in sacrifices.

"Shit...."

He dodged the first blow and used his lightning hand to give a strong punch to the monster's stomach, which vomited green blood.

"Tsk..... disgusting"

Dante continued with a knee right in the stomach where he had hit with a punch, the monster grunted in pain, making the demigod smile sadistically.

There was something fun about someone kneeling before him, Dante wondered if it wasn't because of Zeus' blood or if it wasn't just a nature he never explored in his old life, but either way, it didn't matter.

With both hands pointed, Dante shot electric bolts from his fingers, the creature screamed in pain before turning to dust.

And with that, Dante sighed with a little sweat running down his face, it was a little tiring to use so much power but he was learning, maybe one day he could summon a real lightning bolt from the heavens but until then only contained and compressed electricity was what he could do.

Grabbing his weapons, Dante had a slight grimace on his face, it was clear that there was a difficulty that he realized.

He threw his weapons too much and this could be a problem at some point so either he stopped doing something like that or found a faster way to get his weapons back.

*sigh*

"Living and learning....."

Gathering his spear and sword, which soon turned back into just rings on his fingers, he returned to the hunt. As mortals say, the night is young and he was a child thirsty for battle.

Two hours later.

Analyzing the footprints on the ground, Dante could tell that at least three or more hellhounds were around there. The question was how to fight them. After all, three of them were a rare occurrence, usually one or two. But Dante knew that the more dogs there were, the more they worked as a group, and that was a greater danger than the eggs he found in those trees.

He still needed to research what those things were.

But back to the present, Dante began to walk slowly but steadily. He ventured into the furthest area of the park.

Luckily, he had a compass with him, which helped him orient himself and not get lost in that part of the park where there were more trees and fewer people.

Dante could even feel the denser fog in that part of the world, meaning that monsters with strong hands were probably in that area.

He still hadn't found one. Cyclops is not even a hill giant but he wouldn't be surprised if he found one tonight.

It was on this silent walk that he noticed bushes moving too much for his liking, growling could be heard in several directions.

His demigod instincts screamed "danger".

It was then that a medium-sized hellhound emerged from the forest. It was young, not yet an adult but it was already the size of a full-grown lion. Dante imagined what real adults would be like if he saw one, perhaps almost as big as an elephant or less. This thought sent a shiver down his spine that he, unfortunately, couldn't tell if it was out of fear or excitement at facing such a monster.

The hellhound then growled at him, Dante wasted no time in grabbing his spear.

Lightning crackled on it from the power of the demigod who wielded it. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed two other hellhounds but to the sides, one of them was silently walking backward blocking his only exit.

Dante began to count how many there were, not wanting to be surprised by any other monster that might appear.

"One.... two... three... four... hm interesting this was definitely not something I expected tonight" There was a small touch of emotion coming from fear but Dante continued to keep a serious and at the same time calm look, not wanting to show weakness in front of these four monsters who wanted a piece of him.

The first thing he had to do was to avoid getting hurt too much, say that he fought at school every time one of the orphanage caretakers was becoming irritating to him.

"Rahhh!"

Taking the initiative, he attacked with his spear shining in blue rays. The first one was the one approaching from the right side. He jumped on top of the creature with the spear in his hands, only to be pushed away when another of his pack jumped on top of him.

As a demigod, Dante had a lot of strength, but he was no Hercules and had to use some small laws of gravity to help him, as well as his powers.

The first one he attacked with an electric shock, knocking the monster off him. The monster cried out in pain, but that wasn't all. Dante was quick to kick the monster.

Rolling to the left, escaping another one, then grabbing his sword, he let his instincts take care of him when one of the dogs jumped behind him, ready to grab his neck or shoulder.

"Die!" His sword stuck in the dog's mouth, which didn't even have time to groan when it turned to dust, dropping something that Dante didn't have time to know about, as he was already avoiding another hellhound.

He picked up the spear that had fallen from the ground, his weapons were a bit heavy but he could still manage it.

With a firm thrust of one hand, he electrocuted one of the smaller dogs, as soon as it fell Dante went on the attack but in this attack, he left himself unprotected when one of the dogs managed to scratch his back with its huge black claws.

"Damn..!" Blood stained the ground, unbalanced but still alive Dante struck the ground with his spear, sticking it into the ground, and used it as a catalyst to fire an intense amount of lightning that made a great glow in the darkness of the park.

The dogs fell but they were not dead, Dante was sore and a little tired but that was natural, a few hours of sleep and a week without hunting and he would be ready for another.

With a quick jump, he guided his sword toward the eye of one of the smaller hellhounds killing it instantly.

With a quick roll to the right, he escaped another attack only to be bitten in the leg by one of the other monsters.

There were only two but it was still a difficult fight both were injured, gritting his teeth Dante pointed his golden sword and used it as a catalyst just like his spear but this time he did not fire a lightning bolt but instead used the energy in the blade to increase its sharpness for a short period useful enough to cut off the head of another of the dogs.

After the death of another of his brothers the last hellhound was standing there, fear was present when he took steps back.

Dante smiled despite the trickle of blood that ran from his lips. "Bastard... you think I'm going to let you escape... hehe... you thought... wrong"

Pointing his last strength Dante pointed his sword at the monster, the fear of the hellhound and his primitive instincts had made him. Jumping to attack the demigod.

But that was what Dante expected from Wild Dogs, with the blade shining with blue rays Dante fired his last ray of the night.

This was very concentrated and went straight to the monster's mouth, burning organs and entrails and soon turning it into nothing more than dust.

With a triumphant smile, Dante knelt on the ground, his clothes were torn more than ever but nothing that a little bit of stitching couldn't fix. There was also the fact that his back now had three claw marks on his body, and his leg was injured but fortunately, the bone was not damaged. He would be able to walk normally again after a solid week of rest and light training without involving his legs.

With his assessment complete he looked at the battlefield, the dust was already being blown by the icy night wind. Lucky for him he had brought his jacket, even luckier that the last time he came to the park Dante had left some medical supplies in some strategic areas.

He looked at the ground seeing the dark fur of the hellhound, enough to make a new coat and another that could serve as a rug. Luckily he'll learn to sew and weave clothes to help with the orphanage chores. That also meant some of his siblings would get some new blankets.

He thought a little happily as he gathered his spoils only to find a bronze dagger among the golden dust. It was simple but could still be useful one of these days so, with a happy smile for his spoils, Dante continued his looting as he headed back home after a good night of hunting.

For a second as he walked until he was out of the forest region he stopped looking back a tingling in his neck told him something was wrong but he didn't see anything. Neither monster nor animal but the light of the full moon.

"Damn, I must be getting paranoid" He turned and walked away limping a little and carrying his spoils on his shoulders.

But unfortunately, he didn't see but someone had been watching him closely...

(Zoe Nightshade)

My sisters and I had set up camp near New York.

We had begun our patrols, as always I had already set up my mistress' tent, and we were ordered to check on a small clan of wild cyclopes that had made a base inside Central Park. Nothing too difficult and nothing like a common occurrence in these last centuries, there had been no clusters of monsters since the war of independence.

A facade, I must say, just so that the idiot children of the Gods fail their war. But that was over a hundred years ago, and I was still a little furious that I, and the rest of the hunt, had not been allowed to stop a conflict. Typical of Lord Zeus to do nothing or choose the stupidest thing.

Anyway, that was no longer important now, ten of my sisters were chosen by me to participate. Our mistress was away performing her duties as Goddess of the Moon and our orders were given by her through Lord Hermes, who as much as I hate to say, is not as annoying as Lord Apollo.

"Sisters, form pairs and see what the place is, as soon as we start the attack, be quick and precise!" With that said, I returned to my post on top of the tree our mission then began.

The cyclopes left their camp as soon as they smelled our scent which we did not disguise ourselves on purpose. They had lewd and vile smiles on their grotesque and toothy faces. There was a difference between the wild cyclope children of Gaia and her offspring, and those of Lord Poseidon.

They were cleaner and less grotesque. Most were more gentle if I had to be honest.

"Prepare to shoot!"

As soon as our mission began, not even five minutes later it was over. They were few and less organized, without even decent armor besides the disgusting human skin they wore as clothes.

After finishing, we gathered our arrows and burned the camp as well as the bodies of the innocent souls that were killed. Two men and three women. Only the Gods must know what horrors these women went through.

They were buried, and despite my sisters' discontent, they also buried the men, burning the remains that were scattered around. The wild cyclopes were never exactly clean when they killed their prey.

"Great job. Let's go back to camp. Today, our lady will provide good food for everyone." They smiled while some were wondering if they would have roast chicken. I rolled my eyes since mortals invented this type of delicacy. Many went, but they became addicted to it. Well, you can't say it's not good food, especially with roasted potatoes.

"What was that noise?" With my musings interrupted, I looked at where the sound was coming from. It was a static noise and from the smell, I could tell there was a lot of ozone in the air.

"Let's investigate. There might be a woman in danger." With that, we jumped between the trees and headed towards the sound and the smell that gave way to the smell of iron, the smell of blood.

"What do you think it could be?" One of my younger sisters wondered I thought for a moment.

"Probably a battle, maybe some demigod had the bad luck to encounter some monster, especially on a full moon night"

One of them had a frown on her face. "I hope it's not Lycaon and his pack"

My eyes became a little cold at the memory of the progenitor of the Werewolves, that damn monster was and still is the greatest enemy of the hunters, it was he and his pack who killed many of us, but received the price in blood for each sister taken from us.

"Let's hope you're not another monster, but be aware that you don't know it will be there"

One of my sisters laughed a little and I raised an eyebrow.

"Our lieutenant still needs more English lessons when we get to our camp"

The others continued laughing while my once serious face blushed a little in embarrassment.

I was finally starting to learn English, after so many decades of refusal but from time to time I still spoke a little 'archaic'. But what can I do? I am a woman with over 2000 years of life, of all the languages I have learned, I have never seen a language change so much in just a few decades at every moment.

Sighing, I resigned myself to my small humiliation.

//////

The hunters hid among the trees as they watched a scene that was not seen often, a demigod still quite young facing four hellhounds without any help other than his skills.

Zoe Nightshade had seen many things throughout her long life. She had already seen a scene similar to this, but that was in the times of the Roman Empire and how they cruelly threw women and children to be killed in the arena.

Incredibly, this was not a lost fight to the boy, because his techniques with a sword or a spear were not refined, and even though he was so powerful, he was still strong and quick to strike and dodge the hellhounds.

"My lieutenant, should we do something?"

Zoe took a moment to think but then shook her head in denial. "The boy is doing well, let's see how far he goes, if his life is in danger we'll save him."

She wasn't interested in helping a boy, especially a son of Zeus, from what she could tell when he fired a really powerful lightning bolt at one of the monsters. This was getting more and more interesting to watch, she would say it was almost fun watching the boy dodge every claw or tooth of the hellhounds.

She could take out twenty of them herself on a good day so it wasn't a big deal to her. But he was a mortal, without many years of training or experience which said a lot about his capabilities.

"I'll bet you three days of washing clothes that he can't kill two more hellhounds." One of her sisters started to start the bets, and the others followed suit. Zoe wondered if he could do it.

There if you count the one who was still paralyzed by the lightning, but who would be getting up in less than a few minutes.

She analyzed the boy, as a hunter of Artemis she could see in the dark as if it were day. She analyzed him like a predator would analyze its prey.

He was a little tall for his age, by the aura and smell he couldn't be less than ten years old. His skin was already getting quite a tan and he had bright blue eyes when he used his powers too much. The cut on his back was certainly hindering his movements and that bite on his leg was already unbalancing him too much. A trained demigod could defeat him now if he was careful with electricity.

With a dazzling smile, she spoke in a still low voice so he wouldn't hear her, although, with the growls and the adrenaline running through his veins, she doubted he would hear anything else. "I bet you five favors that he will defeat the four dogs"

The silence was a little heavy, favors between hunters could be anything, from doing tasks for the other or demanding something more "hot", so to speak.

"That's a bet that I can't lose, I accept" One of her sisters murmured, whose name was Ylia, if Zoe wasn't mistaken, and by the look she was giving her, it was clear that if her lieutenant lost the bet, it wouldn't be a favor regarding the camp chores.

The others followed suit and soon everyone was rooting for Dante to lose his fight. But unfortunately, he didn't lose. In the next twenty-five minutes of pure fighting and survival, the young demigod didn't lose. He could have fallen a few times, but he got up and struck harder than usual. In the end, he won when he fired a lightning bolt using his sword as a catalyst and killed another monster.

After that, everyone waited for him to fall to the ground, but he simply knelt, took a deep breath, and analyzed the former battlefield.

It was at that time that Zoe smiled triumphantly, discreetly throwing a simple dagger made by Hephaestus, towards where there was more dust.

If he found it, he could stay. It was her gift to someone who managed to entertain her a little that night and now she had her temporary companies for a good while.

Yes, for sure today was a good night.

Six Months Later

Six months have passed and I have continued my nightly hunts, I rarely encountered a wild cyclops or a hill giant now.

The monsters seemed to become more common each month forcing me to fight and think even more outside the box, ever since I saw a pack of twelve hellhounds making a round near the orphanage. I had a wave of panic and fear swell up in me when it happened, maybe, just maybe, I will survive an attack like that but the point is that many children here will die if a fight like that occurs.

I could not live well with myself if I allowed a battle of that scale to happen. Don't get me wrong I am not a good person, I could care less about morality ever since I died and was reborn into this world. But I am not the type to sacrifice innocents when allowed to save them. This orphanage has been a good place to live and a more than happy place if I had to think.

Since the little unwelcome visit from the pack, I was slowly but steadily looking for a new home. I wasn't going to be adopted, that was just a complication, demigods weren't born to live with mortals, that was an undeniable truth. The question then was how would a child of about eleven years old manage to get out of there and start living on his own.

The chronological time of events hadn't changed yet, and if I wanted to get involved, I'd enroll in the same school as Percy. Well, that was a monumental headache, but it had to be done anyway.

So here I was lying down thinking about life until I remembered the letters my mother received, most of them were a little romantic, they even gave me some ideas for pick-up lines that might work, and others were a gold necklace with a shiny stone.

Knowing that Zeus was a God, I was sure that would be worth a fortune, and it would be useful to me, I needed to buy a new house, far from the crowd.

Lucky for me, there were still newspapers in this world, I was able to see some listings of houses for sale and there was one a little far from the orphanage where I could live. It had a good piece of land with several trees and a solid and well-organized house from the photos.

It would be a great place and if I could see the property I could see if it was a good place to put a strong base, there was also the issue that there were many trees where it was possible to create some traps here and there. Best of all, it was well away from the crowds of New York, but it would be good training for me to get stronger since it was almost ten kilometers from where Percy studied, from what I remember.

It was during this time that I spent an entire day without training just reading the letters my mother received, considered too dramatic for my taste, an irritating unnecessary sentimentality. It was clear that my 'father' was just playing with her, a shame but nothing that I cared about.

But at the end, there was a letter that interested me a check for half a million dollars.

"Fuck yes! That's what I need, money" I felt an intense urge to dance like an idiot and I was already smiling like an idiot.

Thank heavens it was the weekend and the orphanage security was very stupid after saying I was going to see a friend from school they left me with a two-hour return date.

I had a copy of my documents since I was considered wise and responsible to have them in my hand. It was incredibly lucky that no one had done a review of what was in my mother's keepsake box or I would have been robbed badly.

I went straight to the nearest bank with a big smile on my face.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Four hours later I returned to the orphanage getting scolded by the caretakers but I told them to take me to the director and my serious face must have made them see that I was serious.

I entered his office and looked at the man I only saw a few times a day.

He was old, almost 75 years old, with white skin and light eyes. The man gave me a kind smile and I sat down in the chair with the same smile. "So what does one of my older children want to talk to me about?"

I could see the man's intelligence and he was certainly smart so he needed to make sure everything would work out.

"I came with a business proposal for you, sir," I said when I saw a gleam of surprise in his eyes, but when I took out a check the look of greed shone. "I think this small amount should be enough for our business"
