Chapter 435: Conflicting Aura
"Good morning, your Highness," a royal guard greeted as Jake entered the palace.
"Morning?" Jake raised an eyebrow. "Have you all adapted to the universal time format?"
"Yes, your Highness. The new format has been implemented across all institutions, including schools and academies. Surprisingly, the vampires are adapting faster than expected and rarely even use the old time system," the guard explained, his voice steady but his forehead drenched in sweat. The menacing aura Jake gave off by simply standing there was nearly suffocating.
"Ah, I see… thank you for explaining," Jake replied, placing a palm gently on the guard's shoulder.
He then continued walking—toward the empty throne. Standing beside it was a familiar figure.
"Ah, Arthur, you're here. Long time no see. Thanks for heeding my call," Jake said, stretching out his hand for a handshake. However, Arthur didn't accept it. Instead, he shook his head and bowed.
"I'm sorry, your Highness. I'm not worthy of shaking your hand. It's considered taboo for a knight," Arthur replied, his tone sincere.
"What's with all the formalities? I thought old man Duke said you only wanted to be my knight for the Dhampir King's visit," Jake muttered, surprised.
"You misunderstand, your Highness. I was chosen by the King and all the district lords to be your knight. Out of all the participants, I came out on top, and I'm here to replace the now-retired Sir Alphonso," Arthur clarified.
Jake's brows furrowed. "W-Wait… Alphonso retired? A new knight was selected? Then shouldn't you be by the King's side?"
"The King declared you as regent. He also told me some things I can't share. I hope you understand," Arthur said with another respectful bow.
Jake felt a pang in his chest. Someone he once called a friend was now his knight—practically a servant.
'I did ask for a guard… but I meant an inexperienced one I could train. Still, Arthur's perfect for the role. Besides, we only met during the tournament.'
"Alright then," Jake said, glancing at the throne before abruptly sitting on it for the first time.
'So this is what it feels like to sit on a throne. I can't imagine doing this all day… I'm glad I didn't accept being crowned. Yet I still wield a king's authority.'
Suddenly, Arthur pressed a finger to his ear, listening in on his micro-earpiece.
"Your Highness, the Dhampir King's spaceship has arrived," Arthur announced.
"So fast?" Jake asked, slightly startled. "Inform the royal chefs to prepare a banquet. Summon the top district lords and bring me a flying vehicle."
"B-But your Highness, who's going with you?" Arthur asked.
"She is," Jake replied, releasing a massive pool of Ki that blanketed the palace and seeped beyond its walls.
"This… I remember this energy," Arthur murmured, recalling the tournament.
"Mmmh, is Jake calling for me? I guess I have no choice then, hehe," Amber muttered with a twisted smile, releasing fifty percent of her Ki pool.
Woom!
The palace air grew warm and heavy—almost unbreathable.
"W-What is this?! Such a monstrous aura?!" Arthur stammered, overwhelmed. It was at least three times the strength of Jake's.
"Haha, you feel that too, huh? That's Amber. And that's not even her full power. By the way, I remember you can use Ki subconsciously—be nice towards her and she might teach you a few things. Maybe even better than Alphonso," Jake added, rising from the throne as Arthur stood frozen.
'Where did he meet this monster?! Jake himself has become a beast since the tournament—yet he's still stuck at the vampire lord stage? This makes no sense…' Arthur thought, sweat dripping down his face.
---
Jake stepped out of the palace. The moment he did, several suited bodyguards appeared and bowed.
Vampire tradition dictated that guards and soldiers kept themselves hidden unless commanded to show themselves.
Suddenly, three flying vehicles descended, landing before Jake. The center one was clearly meant for him—flanked by the others.
Jake looked up at Amber and gave her a signal. In a flash, she appeared beside him, startling the guards who instinctively reached for their weapons—until Jake raised a hand, halting them.
"Let's go welcome the Dhampir King," Jake said, entering the vehicle alongside Amber.
The convoy shot into the sky, moving at Mach 5. Within minutes, they reached a private airspace where a massive yellow spaceship hovered—yellow, the signature aura color of Dhampirs, in contrast to vampires' red.
Jake's vehicle landed. He and Amber stepped out, flanked by his guards. Soon after, the spaceship door slid open, revealing a burly figure clad in a beast-hide cape. His long hair was tied into a ponytail, and a flawless, thick mustache complemented his sharply trimmed eyebrows and hairline—like he was headed for a date.
"He must've spent hours at the barber," Amber commented, earning a lightning-fast nudge from Jake—too fast for normal eyes to catch. The man was none other than Galak, the Dhampir King. Standing close behind him was a familiar figure in a trench coat and glasses. Three powerful guards loomed behind them.
Both sides walked forward, stopping just shy of a meter apart.
"You don't look like the rumors, your Majesty," Galak said with a courteous bow, extending his hand.
"Oh, but you look exactly as the rumors and history describe, your Majesty," Jake replied, bowing as well and shaking his hand.
But then his expression shifted. The Dhampir aura in Galak's hand sent Jake's own aura into a frenzy—as if reacting to a natural enemy. Galak's eyes also widened as his aura spiked in return, running wildly.
'Monster!'
They both had the same thought as they quickly broke their handshake.
