Chapter 10: the tournament(3)

Commentator: "Alright, ladies and gentlemen, up next we have a highly anticipated match: Liam Hayes vs. Jack Davies! Two of our most promising first-years are about to show us what they're made of!"

The crowd roared in excitement, with students from both sides chanting support.

Random person: "Let's go, Jack! Show him who's boss!"

Another random person: "Come on, Liam! We believe in you! Beat that Jack guy!"

Mako, the guild leader of the top-ranked guild in the USA, the Red Thieves, sat with keen interest, observing the fight below. He murmured to himself, "These first-year students are truly something. They have raw talent and potential… each one of them could be a force to be reckoned with in the future." He leaned forward. "This match should be very interesting."

Liam and Jack walked up to the fighting stage, and as soon as their eyes met, an intense rivalry sparked between them, each determined to prove their superiority.

Liam: "Ready to get defeated, bitch?"

Jack scoffed, unfazed by Liam's taunt.

Jack: "You really think you can beat me? Don't make me laugh."

Liam: "Oh, I don't think—I know. I've been training harder than ever these past two months just for this."

Jack narrowed his eyes.

Jack: "Talk is cheap. Let's see if your training was worth anything."

Commentator: "Fighters, take your positions… and BEGIN!"

In an instant, both Liam and Jack charged at each other. Sparks flew as they summoned their weapons—Liam a lightning sword, Jack an electrified blade—and collided in a powerful clash that made the entire arena tremble. They broke apart, each assessing the other.

Jack immediately launched a Lightning Strike at Liam, who sidestepped with ease and countered with his own Lightning Strike. Jack blocked it with precision, his eyes narrowing as he realized Liam's skill had indeed increased.

Jack smirked. "Not bad. Looks like you've improved. But you're still nowhere near my level."

Without warning, Jack activated Lightning Boost, his body enveloped in crackling energy that enhanced his speed and power. In the blink of an eye, he closed the gap and threw a punch at Liam. Liam barely managed to block, his feet sliding back from the force.

But Liam wasn't deterred. He launched himself into the air and activated Lightning Rain, conjuring a storm of lightning bolts that poured down on Jack like a violent rainstorm. Jack hastily formed a lightning shield to deflect the onslaught, gritting his teeth.

Jack: Alright, this guy's better than I expected. I'm going to have to get serious.

When the lightning rain ended, Jack appeared right in front of Liam and delivered a hard punch to his face, sending him flying. Before Liam could recover, Jack followed up, dashing behind him, then in front, landing a relentless series of punches. For a full minute, Jack pummeled Liam without pause.

As he finally stopped, Jack stood over his opponent, breathing heavily.

Jack: "How's that, bitch? Do you understand the difference in our strength now?"

But to Jack's surprise, Liam began laughing, wiping a trickle of blood from his lip.

Jack: "What's so funny? You think this is a joke?"

Liam: "No, I'm laughing because you actually think your strength is going to make me give up. Trust me, I've fought people way stronger than you and didn't back down. So why would I start now?"

Jack clenched his jaw, his frustration mounting.

Jack: "Fine, then. If you're so confident, bring it on. Show me what you've got."

Jack's expression shifted as he transformed his lightning sword into a lightning spear, revealing his true weapon.

Liam grinned. "So, you're finally getting serious, huh?"

[Note: Jack is a spear user, and he only brings out his spear when he's ready to go all out.]

Jack: "You wanted a fight? Let's do this."

Jack lunged at Liam, unleashing a series of quick, deadly thrusts with his spear, but Liam dodged each attack with agile movements. Seizing an opening, Liam extended his sword and swung it toward Jack's head. Jack ducked just in time, his eyes widening as he realized how close he'd come to getting hit.

Jack: "Damn, man! You nearly took my head off!"

Liam: "Relax. There are plenty of healers here if you get hurt."

With a snarl, Jack countered with a fierce spear slash, but Liam sidestepped, retaliating with a hard kick to Jack's stomach. Jack doubled over, spitting out saliva as he was thrown back against the barrier.

Jack: "Ugh… damn it… that hurt."

But he quickly stood back up, determination burning in his eyes.

Jack: "You're not going to defeat me that easily."

Liam: "Yeah, I know."

Once again, they clashed, their weapons sparking as they collided.

Jack: "Do you actually believe you're going to win?"

Liam: "Yes, I do."

Jack sneered. "Why? What makes you so confident?"

Liam smirked. "Because I created a new technique just to take you down."

Jack's eyes widened slightly, intrigued.

Jack: "A new technique, huh? And you think I can't dodge or counter it?"

Liam: "That's exactly what I think."

Jack: "Then show me. Let's see what this technique of yours is."

The clash ended, and they both jumped back, watching each other carefully. But instead of using his new technique, Liam activated Lightning Rain once again.

Jack frowned. Why's he using Lightning Rain again instead of his new technique? Is he just trying to mess with me?

Jack dodged the bolts of lightning with ease, but a sense of unease crept over him.

Jack: This is strange… I have a bad feeling he's up to something.

Jack shook his head, pushing the thought aside.

Jack: No, I'm just being paranoid.

When Lightning Rain finally ended, Jack looked up to see Liam standing perfectly still, just staring at him.

Jack: "What the hell are you doing, standing there like an idiot?"

Liam said nothing, his gaze intense.

Jack: "Fine, if you're just going to stand there, I'll—"

Before Jack could finish his sentence, Liam whispered, "Lightning Swift."

In an instant, Liam transformed into pure lightning, moving so fast that Jack could barely register it. By the time Jack realized what was happening, it was too late—Liam had already sliced through the air, cutting off Jack's hand in one swift motion.

Jack: "AHHHHH! What the hell just happened?! AHHH!"

Commentator: "Uh… I'm not entirely sure what we just witnessed, but it appears that Liam Hayes has won!"

The crowd erupted into cheers and applause, their excitement at a fever pitch.

Liam: "See? I told you there was no way you'd dodge or counter it."

Healers rushed in immediately, tending to Jack and beginning the process of regenerating his hand.

Liam: "Good fight, though, Jack. I'll admit, if I hadn't used that technique, I probably would've lost. Let's fight again in the future."

As Liam walked off the stage, he was greeted by his friends.

Henry: "Wow, Jack actually lost. That technique you used was insane!"

Luna: "Yeah, he even got his hand cut off!"

Amelia: "That was brutal."

Lucas: "That technique was incredible, Liam."

Ava: "And you were so fast! It was amazing."

Mia: "You looked so cool and strong out there, Liam!"

Liam chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. "Haha, thanks, everyone."

Dakota nodded with a grin. "See? I told you you'd win."

Liam smiled. "Yeah, I know. And thanks for all the training these past two months, Dakota."

Dakota: "No problem."

Liam looked at Dakota, an eager glint in his eye. "And Dakota, you know it's your turn to fight next, right?"

Dakota smirked. "Yeah, I know. I'll be going up against Henry. He may be more skilled, but I'm stronger. Let's see who wins: the author or his main character."

The crowd's cheers still echoed through the arena as the next round was about to begin.
