Chapter 169: The Breaking Point
Von raised his mace, channeling the shadows to intercept the attack. The tendrils lashed out, swallowing the magic whole, their movements more erratic and frenzied than before.
Von's body trembled under the strain, his breaths coming in ragged gasps as he continued to absorb the artifact's relentless barrage. The battlefield around him was a blur of light and shadow, the conflicting forces clashing in a spectacle of destruction. Each time he consumed a spell, the darkness within him grew stronger, its whispers louder and more insistent.
His vision blurred, the edges of his consciousness fraying as the hunger threatened to take over. But through the chaos, Von clung to a single thought: he was doing this to protect them. Lydia, Horizon, the others—they were counting on him. If he failed, they would all die.
The artifact unleashed its final strike—a massive wave of energy that dwarfed all the previous attacks combined. It was a culmination of its power, a last-ditch effort to obliterate its target. The ground quaked as the energy surged forward, its intensity so great that the air itself seemed to ignite.
Von let out a guttural roar, the sound echoing across the battlefield as he poured every ounce of his strength into his defense. The shadows around him surged, forming a towering barrier of darkness that met the incoming wave head-on. The collision was cataclysmic, the force of it shaking the very earth and sending shockwaves rippling outward.
For a moment, it seemed as though the darkness would hold. The wave of energy crashed against the barrier, its light dimming as the shadows consumed it. But the strain was too much. Cracks began to form in the barrier, faint at first but growing larger with each passing second.
Von's body screamed in protest, his muscles burning and his mind teetering on the edge of collapse. The darkness within him roared, demanding release, but he held firm. With one final push, he drew upon the last reserves of his strength, the shadows around him surging with renewed ferocity.
The barrier shattered.
The remnants of the energy wave surged forward, but it was no longer the devastating force it had been. Weakened and scattered, it struck Von with a fraction of its original power. He stumbled but remained standing, his breath ragged and his vision swimming.
The battlefield fell silent.
Von lowered his mace, the tendrils of shadow receding as he forced the darkness back into the depths of his being. His body was battered and bruised, his strength nearly spent, but he had survived. The artifact's energy was depleted, its light dim and flickering as its power faded.
He glanced back at Lydia, who stared at him with wide eyes, her expression a mixture of awe and concern. Von offered her a faint, weary smile before turning his gaze back to the battlefield. Find your next read on empire
The Kingdom of Stars had unleashed their most powerful weapon, and it hadn't been enough. But Von knew the cost of his victory. The darkness within him had grown stronger, its hunger more insistent. And he knew that only a bit more and he would have been consumed by it.
Aeloria and her team stood in stunned silence, disbelief etched across their faces. They had thrown everything they had at Nyx's Guild—every spell, every ounce of mana, and even two of their most powerful artifacts. Yet, it hadn't been enough. The opposing team still stood tall, unyielding and seemingly unstoppable.
"This . . . this isn't possible," Trisha stammered, her voice shaking as she stared at the battlefield.
The once-proud Kingdom of Stars had dominated every challenge until now. Victory had always been within reach, the outcome a foregone conclusion. But today, they were faltering. Today, they were losing—to a nameless guild, an obscure group of players who had risen from the shadows like specters, defying all expectations.
"This wasn't supposed to happen," Trisha muttered under her breath, her fists clenched. This was supposed to be her moment, the battle that would etch her name among the champions of the season. This would have elevated her status in the Kingdom of Stars. Yet now, everything was crumbling.
"What are we going to do, Aeloria?" she asked desperately, her voice rising as panic set in.
Aeloria didn't respond immediately. Her eyes remained locked on the battlefield, her expression unreadable. The tattered remnants of their strategy lay scattered before them.
Von and his allies stood unscathed, their defenses impossibly strong. Even now, Frigid was back on his feet, their earlier efforts rendered meaningless.
Theron's voice broke through the tense silence. "Aeloria, we need a plan. We're out of options. If we can't take their flag, it's over."
Liora shook her head, her voice filled with exasperation. "What now? Do we just throw more spells at them? We're running out of mana, and our weapons will break at any moment, and they're not even breaking a sweat!"
Then, suddenly, Aeloria laughed. It was a sharp, chilling sound that sent shivers down her teammates' spines.
"Ahahaha!"
The others turned to her in shock, confusion etched on their faces.
"Aeloria . . . ?" Trisha's voice trembled.
Aeloria slowly raised her gaze, her eyes alight with an unsettling glint. Her lips curled into a crazy smile. "The Kingdom of Stars . . . " she hissed, her voice laced with madness, ". . . doesn't lose."
Before anyone could react, Aeloria gripped her staff with both hands and snapped it in half.
A surge of mana erupted from the broken staff, engulfing her in a blinding, golden glow. The air around her crackled with raw energy, forcing her teammates to stumble back.
"Aeloria, what are you doing?!" Trisha screamed, her voice filled with fear.
Theron's face went pale, his words barely a whisper. "That . . . that's mana burst . . ."
"What?!" Liora's eyes widened in horror.
Mana Burst. A forbidden spell, reserved for only the most powerful mages. It was a final, desperate move—sacrificing the caster's life in exchange for a cataclysmic surge of magic capable of rivaling the might of ancient artifacts.
"Aeloria, stop!" Liora shouted, her voice breaking. "This isn't the answer! We can figure something else out!"
