I Only Tame Dragons

Chapter 164: The Curse Awakens

Behind him, Lydia, Silphie, and Frigid watched Von with a mixture of awe and fear. Until now, they hadn't realized the truth—that Von was a vampire, one of the cursed Nightcrawlers, creatures banished from every kingdom and countries across Eternia due to the dark power they carried.

The air around Von grew thick with an oppressive malice, enough to make their breath catch in their throats. It wasn't just fear of the unknown; it was an instinctual terror, as if their very souls recognized the ancient power before them.

This was no ordinary vampire. The energy radiating from him was cold, predatory, and overwhelming—something far more dangerous than any curse-bound creature they had ever imagined.

"V-Von?" Lydia muttered, her voice shaky as she gazed at the figure before her.

Silphie stood beside her, equally confused and shaken. She stared at the man before them, or what appeared to be Von, though something felt wrong—he was different, as if a shadow of the person they once knew.

"He's an elf, but . . . a vampire too? Is that even possible?"

Lydia couldn't tear her eyes away from him, her mind spinning as the pieces fell into place, even if it didn't make sense. "He's . . . cursed . . . ," she whispered, almost to herself, as if saying it aloud might make the horrific truth easier to digest.

A curse, something ancient and dark, something that twisted and changed people into something they weren't meant to be. A curse of this magnitude had the power to completely alter a creature's nature.

That's why they were so dangerous and unpredictable—at any moment, they could lose control, their minds consumed by darkness, and turn on anyone in their path, friend or foe alike. The sheer unpredictability made them terrifying, for once unleashed, their fury knew no boundaries.

Frigid, however, was less shaken than the others. He turned his gaze towards Von, his eyes narrowing as if he could pierce the layers of darkness that had shrouded him.

"It's still Von," he said firmly, his voice firm despite the malice that clung to Von like a second skin. "I can feel him. Despite everything . . . despite the change . . . he's still the man who saved us."

No matter what he had become—no matter if Von had crossed into the ranks of the cursed Nightcrawlers, the creatures of the dark meant to bring chaos to the world—Von was still Von. He had been their savior this time.

If it wasn't for Von, they would have all been dead by now.

Frigid's words held a truth that was undeniable, one that settled over them like a heavy fog. Lydia may not fully understand what had happened to him, or how the cursed powers had taken root within him, but the bond they shared—the bond forged until now—wasn't something easily erased by any curse.

Von had saved them from the Kingdom of Stars even it meant exposing his true nature or worse, loose his mind to darkness.

Despite the darkness that surrounded Von now, the man they had fought beside was still there, buried beneath the curse.

Von raised a hand, and dark energy crackled around it, forming into a sphere of concentrated mana. "While I still have my sanity," Von's voice shifted, the lighthearted tone of a charming tease suddenly darkened into something cold and dangerous. "I suggest you retreat . . . or better yet, surrender."

The change in his voice was jarring. The flirtatious ring of his words twisted into an eerie, almost hypnotic pitch, like the call of a beast that had been buried deep within him. It sent shivers down the spine of anyone who heard it, and there was no mistaking the menace that lurked beneath the surface of his calm demeanor.

"This is bad, right?" Theron whispered, his voice low and filled with concern. His eyes darted from Von to Aeloria, panic rising in his chest. "A dark creature like that . . . we can't defeat him."

Aeloria's gaze remained fixed on Von, her mind racing as she weighed their options. She clenched her fists, trying to suppress the growing fear in her own heart. "He still has his sanity," she said, her voice steady but with a trace of unease. "That means he's not willing to use the full power of the darkness or the curse. We still have a chance."

"That's cold comfort," Liora snapped, eyeing Von warily. Her hand instinctively reached for her staff, her knuckles white with tension. "You really think we can fight something like that? A Nightcrawler? Do you have any idea how dangerous they are?"

Aeloria didn't answer immediately. She knew that the Nightcrawlers were among the most feared creatures in Eternia, cursed beings who had been banished from every land for their uncontrollable power. Their presence alone had the ability to warp the very fabric of the world around them, driving even the strongest warriors to madness.

"Do we just . . . forfeit?" Trisha asked, her voice wavering slightly. She had been part of this team for a while, but even she wasn't foolish enough to throw her life away recklessly. The idea of facing a creature like Von, someone who radiated such malice and darkness, sent a chill through her.

"Not until Cedrick gives the signal," Aeloria replied firmly, her gaze never leaving Von. She was determined to stand her ground for as long as possible, but she knew that once the signal was given, their only option would be to retreat. There was no going back after that. They would lose the game.

"But . . ." Trisha hesitated, glancing between Aeloria and the others, her uncertainty clear. "What if we just . . . walk away?"

Aeloria's eyes narrowed, and she took a step forward. Her voice was harsh, carrying the weight of authority. "Don't you understand? If we forfeit now, we're finished. It's not just Cedrick's wrath we're facing. If we fail after using all of those artifacts, all those resources, we'll be punished by the Queen herself. And her punishment is not something you want to experience." Find exclusive stories on empire

A collective shiver ran through the group, and even Trisha, who was still new to this life, felt a sense of dread at the mention of the Queen's wrath.
