Chapter 165: I Just Want a Single Ending [165]
"Happy Birthday!"
As they were celebrating, Seika Ijichi walked over, carefully carrying a large cake, and placed it on the table. Ms. PA followed closely behind, holding two birthday gifts in her hands.
Just as I thought.
Watching the scene unfold, Kamigawa Saku couldn't help but feel smug. He'd suspected all along that Seika, being the doting big sister she was, would have prepared something special for Nijika's birthday.
"Thank you."
Surrounded by her friends, Nijika's heart was overflowing with gratitude.
"Now, you might want to think about what you'll wish for when you blow out the candles."
As he placed candles on the cake, Kamigawa Saku gently reminded her.
"Actually, I already know what I'll wish for," she replied softly.
"I'll take care of photos and videos!" Ikuyo Kita could barely contain her excitement, snapping away at every moment. Celebrating a friend's birthday deserved every frame. Plus, she thought, these photos would be perfect to post on Instagram later!
"I'm starving."
Meanwhile, Ryo Yamada rubbed her stomach, eyeing the cake eagerly.
And in her usual style, Hitori Gotoh had subtly slipped to the back, trying her best not to ruin the group photos. Everyone else looked so photogenic—she didn't want to make things difficult for Ikuyo by adding herself in.
"Make sure you have the beauty filter on, and before you upload anything, please touch up my photos!" Anon Chihaya whispered, inching over to Ikuyo and directing her on filters and lighting.
"Relax, Ai! I'd already planned on it!" Ikuyo replied with a laugh, snapping photos with practiced finesse.
Ms. PA, keeping her distance, called out, "Just don't get me in any of those shots, alright? If I do show up, don't upload those online. Please delete them!"
As a virtual idol, she couldn't risk having her face revealed online—it would only invite a storm of problems.
"…"
Watching the lively chaos around her, Seika simply sighed. Though she'd planned to tell them to keep the noise down, she eventually let it go. After all, this was Nijika's day. If she was happy, a little extra energy was just fine.
---
Finally, the candles were lit, and everyone quieted down to sing a round of the birthday song.
"Happy birthday to you…"
I hope Kessoku Band can keep going strong, and that everyone stays healthy…
With her hands clasped close to her heart, Nijika made her wish, closed her eyes, and blew out the candles. After that came the all-important cake-cutting.
Tradition says the first slice goes to the most important person in the room, and Kamigawa Saku couldn't help but wonder who Nijika would choose.
To his satisfaction, Nijika sliced off the first piece and handed it to her sister without hesitation.
"This is too big; there's no way I can finish it."
Despite her complaint, Seika couldn't hide her delighted smile.
That's sweet.
Watching the two sisters share such a tender moment, Kamigawa Saku could only imagine how much better their bond would be after that planned day at the amusement park together.
After handing out the rest of the cake, the friends enjoyed the dessert while Ikuyo snapped even more photos. Ryo devoured her piece immediately, while Hitori savored each bite with wide-eyed wonder, convinced that the cake's sweetness was amplified by the love and friendship behind it.
Meanwhile, Ms. PA and Seika returned to the bar.
"Aren't you going to open your presents?" Kamigawa Saku asked as he took a seat beside Nijika.
"I think I'll save it for when I get home," she replied, casting a glance toward Ryo. Knowing her friend's typical nonchalance, she had a hunch that Ryo's gift wasn't quite…well, let's just say it was probably thrown together at the last minute.
Opening gifts here, in front of everyone, would only highlight that fact.
"Alright, then."
Kamigawa Saku flashed her a satisfied smile. Saving the gift for later was the perfect way to keep his plan intact.
---
Later that evening, after the festivities had ended and everyone had gone, Nijika finally brought her gifts upstairs to open.
"This one's from Kamigawai, right?"
She held up a light, neatly wrapped box with a puzzled expression.
It's so light. What could it be?
Curious, she carefully unwrapped it to reveal what lay inside.
Amusement park tickets?
Staring at the two tickets, Nijika glanced over at her sister, who was sprawled out on the couch watching TV with a stuffed toy hugged close.
"Hey, Seika, Kamigawa got me two amusement park tickets. Why don't we go together sometime?"
Had he given her four tickets, she could have easily invited the other Kessoku Band members, but with only two, she didn't want to invite just one band member and leave the others out. Inviting her sister, however, was a perfect solution.
"Amusement park?"
Seika's attention drifted away from the TV, her gaze landing on the tickets Nijika was holding up.
"Yeah!"
Nijika waved the tickets in front of her sister excitedly.
"No thanks. You should go with someone else," Seika replied without missing a beat, her eyes already back on the TV.
"Huh? Why? It's an amusement park!" Nijika huffed, feeling a little stung by the flat rejection.
If Seika refused, Nijika was at a loss—no matter who she invited from the band, it would seem unfair to the others.
"Adults have too much going on. Who has time to spend a whole day at an amusement park?"
Seika's voice was tinged with the unmistakable weariness of an adult's responsibilities.
