Chapter 24: Chapter 24: A Mind Willing but a Memory Insufficient
After clicking on the title, lines of game code filled the screen.
As Feng Qi scrolled down endlessly, the smile on his face gradually stiffened.
Looking at the dense maze of game code on the screen, he felt that his dream of becoming the world's richest man was drifting further and further away.
"Can a carbon-based lifeform even memorize all of this?"
[Careless as always. Next time, remember to bring a portable hard drive.]
The narrator's voice came in with a timely jab.
If he could bring a hard drive from the real world into the future dream realm, the problem would indeed be easy to solve—all he'd need to do is copy the files. The issue, however, was that he couldn't bring anything from reality into the dream realm.
The artistic side of things wasn't much of a problem. He could think of ways to hire a real-world studio to handle the modeling and animations.
But without the ability to bring the game code out, creating The Savior was utterly impossible.
The code contained the trajectory data and operational logic for tens of thousands of magical arts—it was the crux of the entire game.
After a long silence, Feng Qi let out a regretful sigh.
[Realizing that your brain is incapable of storing such an enormous amount of code, you wonder if there's a prefix title that could grant you unlimited memory.]
The narrator's remark reignited Feng Qi's spirits.
"Does such a prefix title really exist? If I get it, can I have perfect recall? Also, what kind of domain creature do I need to kill to get this title?"
But as he fired off a series of questions, the narrator suddenly went silent.
Gritting his teeth in frustration, Feng Qi felt thoroughly vexed. The narrator always seemed to vanish at the most crucial moments, as if it existed solely to torment him mentally.
Closing the code page, Feng Qi felt a twinge of regret but also a surge of anticipation.
As annoying as the narrator was, its hints had always pointed him in the right direction when it mattered.
If the narrator mentioned such a prefix title, then it must exist. After all, there was no shortage of strange and unique domain creatures. A creature with a perfect memory trait wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility.
Still, for now, he couldn't expect to create The Savior. The plan would have to be postponed.
Glancing at the clock, Feng Qi noted that there were only 28 minutes left until Little Black would arrive.
To play it safe, he decided to leave early and continue exploring the outside world. He'd return to the database in a few days for another attempt.
The new requirement of expending energy points to enter the future dream realm meant that he couldn't afford to die recklessly anymore.
After all, every life he had in the dream realm now came at a cost of over a million yuan.
The expenses were too great—his bank account wouldn't be able to keep up.
So he needed to maximize the time he spent in the dream realm each visit.
In the past, he would have faced Little Black with a "fight to the death, even if I lose" mentality, determined not to lose his spirit.
But now, his mindset had shifted:
"If I can't win, can't I just run?"
It was like playing an arcade game with limited coins. If you wanted more playtime, you had to avoid wasting lives.
Feng Qi walked out of the Star City Underground Shelter, following the metallic corridor.
The world outside greeted him with howling winds and a dim, yellowish sky. Drizzling blood rain fell relentlessly, and massive black shadows occasionally flitted through the thick layer of clouds above.
This desolate world had not changed much despite Feng Qi's relentless efforts.
Long accustomed to the bleak scenery, Feng Qi grabbed a stray leg bone as he exited the metal corridor and continued eastward.
Along the way, he entered full-on killing mode once more. Every zombie and worm he encountered fell to his hand, becoming nutrients for his evolution.
After defeating a one-armed zombie, he felt a significant shift within his body.
A surge of warmth coursed through him, and the pink, fleshy tissue on his body transformed into clearly defined muscle fibers. Though his internal organs remained decayed and shriveled, the foul stench emanating from him was noticeably reduced.
"One step closer to being human again," Feng Qi muttered, clenching his fist in exhilaration.
Summoning his attribute panel, he saw that his stats had indeed changed.
[Resilience (Level 2) • Strong Zombie: Feng Qi]
Strength Level: Unranked
Prefix Titles:
Strong (Body strength +20%, enhanced self-healing capabilities)
Resilience Level 2 (Muscle Resilience +2%)
Bloodline: Human (Basic)
Bloodline Evolution Points: 113/1000
Prefix Title Milestones:
[Strong (Upgradeable)]: Milestone Progress – 0%
[Resilience Level 2 (Upgradeable)]: Milestone Progress – 2%
The "Normal" prefix had been upgraded to "Strong," and Feng Qi could clearly feel the improvements in his physical capabilities. With a slight squeeze, the bone in his hand cracked under the force of his grip.
"Stronger again!" Feng Qi exclaimed with a satisfied grin.
[One step closer to becoming a grotesque, muscle-bound monstrosity. Keep it up!]
"Shut up!"
[You got it!]
Following the narrator's guidance, Feng Qi continued heading east. After hours of travel, he finally left the zombie-infested wasteland of skeletons behind.
In its place stood a field of crumbling buildings: overturned billboards with dangling wires, dilapidated office towers missing large sections, dust-covered storefronts, and collapsed skyscrapers that lay sprawled across the road.
Walking through the ruins, Feng Qi felt as if he had stepped into a post-apocalyptic movie.
Driven by curiosity about this dreamlike future world, he climbed a decrepit eighteen-story building. From the rooftop, he gazed into the distance.
Everywhere he looked was barren. The only movement came from zombies and strange, grotesque creatures aimlessly roaming the desolation.
In that moment, a pang of sorrow washed over him.
"If I can't return to reality… if this world is left with only me… how long could I endure it?"
[I have no idea if you could, but I definitely wouldn't last. This place is too damn lonely. No people, no fun, nothing but zombies and monsters. What kind of carbon-based lifeform could survive here long-term?]
Feng Qi: …
[Oh, right. Forgot to mention—while I couldn't handle it, I think you totally can!]
Feng Qi: …
The narrator's unfiltered commentary, always popping up at the most unexpected moments, left him both exasperated and bemused.
After a brief silence, he asked aloud, "Narrator, what exactly are you? Are you some kind of tutorial system like in a game?"
[Since you've asked so sincerely, I'll mercifully tell you… (dramatic pause, background music intensifies) My dear child, I'm your father!]
"Alright, come out of my head if you dare, and I'll beat you to death," Feng Qi growled, veins bulging on his forehead as a surge of anger overtook him.
Despite the narrator's mockery, its antics managed to dispel the sense of loneliness that had crept into Feng Qi's heart.
Taking a deep breath, he began climbing back down the way he had come.
He still wasn't sure if Little Black had left the underground shelter, so his plan was to continue exploring this devastated world for now.
As he descended along the exterior wall, his feet had just touched the ground when he suddenly froze.
Turning sharply to his right, he saw a floating, blood-red eye silently hovering beside him, its eerie presence unnoticed until now.
