Chapter 199 The Fish Has Come
"It's already the fourth day."
In the solitary ward, He MingXue spoke faintly while laying out a three of a kind.
"What's the rush?" Wang Qianfeng said. "We're fishing; the most important thing is patience. Pair of fives!"
"Pair of tens," Wang Lan silently played his cards.
"Pair of aces!" He MingXue was still somewhat annoyed. "I'm not being impatient, but as we fish for the mole, we're also expending internal trust. Many of our brothers have risked their lives for the Bureau, and we all know in our hearts that they can be trusted. Yet we're still guarding against them like they're thieves, which is disheartening for them."
"Pass!" Wang Qianfeng declared. "When the safety of the nation is at stake, if they can't even tolerate this minor grievance, are they still the elite of the Tianjian Bureau? The interests of the nation come above all else, as does its safety."
Just as He MingXue was about to continue playing, a hurried series of footsteps approached from the doorway. All three men paused abruptly as the door was knocked. "Report, the brothers outside the hospital have discovered some activity."
"What kind of activity?" He MingXue asked.
"Near the small building, there have been some patients who seem to be passing by, intentionally or unintentionally. There were none in the past few days, and these patients haven't been seen before."
"It seems... the fish has taken the bait," He MingXue said, closing his cards, his face alight with excitement.
"The Demon Clan's target is definitely Duan Ziqi," Wang Qianfeng stated. "We'll keep it relaxed on the outside but tight on the inside and observe for a while longer. The primary tactic is to lure them into a trap, and we'll adapt to other changes as they occur."
"Got it! I'll go make the arrangements." He MingXue smiled, stood up, and left the room.
"It seems the mole isn't foolish either..." Wang Lan murmured with a bitter smile. "Director Wang is indeed wise, guessing that even if the Demon Clan were to strike, it would most likely be through a Demon spy."
"For a mole to have remained hidden within the Tianjian Bureau for so long proves they're a highly skilled agent," Wang Qianfeng said. "The traps you've set are necessary but also raise suspicion. For example, placing Duan Ziqi in the hospital. According to the safest measures, Duan Ziqi should be protected within the Tianjian Bureau. Keeping him in the hospital clearly weakens his protection. Additionally, you've had our men spread word of Duan Ziqi's condition and let everyone know about the recent arrests of human traitors.
"It's somewhat too deliberate. Yet, since any one of our men might be a Demon spy hidden among us, it's necessary to keep everyone informed about Duan Ziqi's status. The mole must realize that you are trying to draw him out, especially with him in the shadows and you in the light. But your tactic is an open conspiracy. As long as the Demon Clan cannot be sure that Duan Ziqi is truly dead, or that the human traitors we've caught recently didn't provide information extracted from Duan Ziqi's mind, the mole only has two options: act recklessly or withdraw. If he withdraws, we will know who the mole is. If he acts recklessly, we will also know. The only way for him to avoid exposure is to use Demon spies."
"Even so," Wang Lan interjected, "all we need to do is annihilate any intruding Demon spies. As long as they can't confirm Duan Ziqi's fate, sending any more is futile."
"That may be," Wang Qianfeng replied, "but we mustn't underestimate the Demon Clan. For us, it's a matter of how many come and how many die. But for the Demon Clan, if they don't even get the chance to break into the ward and see the truth for themselves, can they still call themselves Demon elites? No matter how we defend, they will find a way. This is a game of strategy. The greatest respect for an opponent is to prepare for the worst. Never underestimate your adversary, and don't think your plans are foolproof. When you make a plan, always ask yourself: what would you do if the enemy sees through all your schemes and turns them against you? Don't count victories before they happen; first, consider the possibility of defeat."
"So... what do we do now?" Wang Lan asked. "Should we move Duan Ziqi? That way, even if they break in, they won't see the truth."
"If this were a competition with the Demon Clan, he would be the trophy we're fighting for," Wang Qianfeng said. "The trophy is in our hands now. The only way to ensure it's completely secure is to keep it firmly grasped. We must swallow any meat that has made it to our mouths. Since the Demon Clan has sent another spy team, let's make sure none of them return."
BOOM—
Almost the instant Wang Qianfeng finished speaking, a violent explosion suddenly sounded from outside. The explosion was abrupt.
"They've made their move!" Wang Lan exclaimed, standing up.
"Since we've detected them, they will definitely act quickly," Wang Qianfeng said calmly. "Let's remain seated and keep our cool."
Outside the small building, a dozen or so Demons disguised as patients suddenly transformed, viciously charging toward the isolated inpatient building.
The Demon Clan possesses immense power compared to humans. With Soul Beads, their Star Power endurance and recovery abilities are far beyond what humans can match. If not for humanity's significant advantage in skill, Star Martial Warriors would be nearly helpless against Demons.
A beetle-like Demon flew into the sky. Its six abdominal legs clasped together, instantly forming a lightning orb over three meters in diameter.
"Super Thunderstorm!"
The lightning orb, like a cannonball fired from a cannon, blasted down toward the Tianjian Bureau's position. An orb of this size could kill at least five or six people if it hit its target.
"Wind Dragon Roar!"
Within the defensive position, Zhang Xiaoxue looked up at the orb. Star Power surged around her as a huge Star Power array materialized before her. From the array, a wind dragon burst forth and fiercely collided with the speeding lightning orb.
In terms of Star Power consumption, creating such a large lightning orb would require ten times the energy of the wind dragon. But because wind counters lightning, and Zhang Xiaoxue's control over Star Power was extremely masterful, the seemingly weaker attack prevailed. The meteor-like lightning orb, just as it was about to crash, was shattered midair by the wind dragon's impact.
"What?" the beetle-like Demon in the sky cried out in surprise.
"Xiaoxue!" Zhang Yeqiu suddenly called out from her side.
They acted almost simultaneously, a red and a cyan Star Power array materializing in front of each of them respectively.
"Fire Dragon Flame Bomb!"
"Wind Dragon Roar!"
A fire dragon burst forth from Zhang Yeqiu, and at the same time, Zhang Xiaoxue's wind dragon roared out of her Star Power formation. But the next moment, the sisters' maneuver left all the Tianjian Bureau members staring, wide-eyed in disbelief.
They suddenly slammed their respective Star Power formations together. Instantly, the formations merged into a green-and-red Tai Chi fish.
The wind dragon and the fire dragon intertwined in mid-air.
"Scorching Flame Dragon!"
A golden dragon made of golden flames charged into the sky. The heavily armored, beetle-like Demon stared, its eyes wide, frantically flapping its wings to ascend. However, its bulky body was not agile. Faced with the golden dragon's speed, the beetle-like Demon could only watch helplessly as the fire dragon struck it, disintegrating it into ashes in a fierce blaze.
"Good!"
"These humans can actually perform combined Star Martial Skills? Damn it!" Hidden in the shadows, a Demon sneered, no longer concealing its presence. It stepped out from the undergrowth, took three light steps, and completed its transformation.
The transformed Demon had an inverted triangular head, like a mantis, a slender and tall frame, and a pair of scabbard-like shells on its back. Its body was green, covered in black spots. Cold, gleaming spines protruded from every mobile joint, and from its elbows grew two terrifying, curved blades.
The Demon's body was enveloped in a green light that burned like flames. The moment it appeared, a terrifying pressure, like a landslide, swept toward the Tianjian Bureau's position.
"A high-level Demon!" Wang Qianfeng exclaimed from his hospital room, his head snapping up in shock. "Is the Demon Clan really intending to launch an all-out attack?"
"Should we go support them?" Wang Lan asked quickly.
"He MingXue can handle it. Let's wait a bit longer," Wang Qianfeng replied.
Step by step, the high-level Demon approached, its aura howling. The terrifying pressure swept past, causing many of the Tianjian Bureau guards to collapse under the strain. Even Zhang Xiaoxue and Zhang Yeqiu unconsciously retreated a step.
"Hmph!"
In an instant, the Demon blurred into a shadow, seeming to leap across time to appear right in front of the Zhang sisters. A blade imbued with Speedy Wind slashed through the air, aimed at Zhang Yeqiu's head.
ZZZT—
A streak of purple light flared, like lightning splitting the sky. A figure materialized in front of Zhang Yeqiu instantly. Their silhouettes eerily interwove and then separated in the blink of an eye.
He MingXue's body flickered with lightning. He stared expressionlessly at the Demon, whose aura seethed. The purple Flame Sword in his hands danced like will-o'-the-wisps at his fingertips.
The Demon stood motionless, its eyes fixated on the broken curved blade at its elbow. The eyes on its triangular head flickered like indicator lights.
Instantly, the shattered blade reformed. The two figures tangled together once again. The Demon's wind-like speed clashed with He MingXue's lightning-quick movements. For a moment, the shockwaves from their fight seemed to stir the very heavens and earth.
Wang Qianfeng stood quietly at the window, hands behind his back, staring into the distance at the crackling lightning and feeling the harsh howl of the wind.
At that moment, a Demon's face appeared on the hospital room wall, as if it were a relief sculpture.
Almost the instant it appeared, Wang Lan sharply raised his head, his eyes locking with the Demon's. In that instant, an indescribable terror gripped Wang Lan's heart.
"Illusion Technique!"
In a heartbeat, Wang Lan's heart leaped to his throat. He activated his Phoenix form.
A crest surfaced on Wang Lan's forehead, and in that moment, the terrible feeling vanished. The Demon on the wall passed through it like a ghost from the underworld entering the Human World, transforming into a ribbon that surged toward Duan Ziqi on the hospital bed.
In his Phoenix form, Wang Lan instantly activated his dynamic vision. His Flame Sword became a streak of light, slashing fiercely at the Demon's head.
BOOM—
The wall shattered, and the ceiling above shot skyward like a firework. In that instant, the world turned eerily overcast, and an aura of death materialized into a fierce gale.
The newly appeared Demon dripped green blood. Its eyes were fixed on Wang Lan, who had slashed it, then it looked at Duan Ziqi on the nearby hospital bed.
"As I suspected, Poison Sting was already dead. This was just your strategy to lure us into your trap. I must say, you were successful. You've won... But your victory ends here!"
BUZZZZ—
Suddenly, an ear-piercing hum emanated from the Demon's body.
"Not good! Demonic language fluctuation!" Wang Lan shouted, his figure flashing as he slashed toward the Demon. At the same time, Wang Qianfeng, moving like the wind, also struck. The two Galaxy Stage masters attacked in concert. The Demon wore a relieved, bitter smile as its Star Power surged.
SWISH—
A blade grazed past its head.
A palm plunged into its chest.
Under the combined attack of the two Galaxy Stage masters, the Demon didn't even have a chance to self-destruct.
