Chapter 168 They're Just Corpses
"Assisting the Chief of Police in dismantling a criminal organization: reward five thousand experience points and three hundred skill points." A notification chimed in Wang Lan's mind, and a smile touched his lips. Three hundred skill points isn't bad at all.
"Officer, I really don't know anything..."
Just as he returned to find Hu Qing, he heard an extremely aggrieved complaint from inside the car.
"Officer, those six bastards robbing the bank had nothing to do with me! I make more than five million a month from my Phoenix Building alone; why would I need to rob a bank? I haven't seen them since yesterday. Moreover, they've grown wings now and hardly listen to me anymore. Ever since Crow died, they've all gotten arrogant, wanting to snatch Crow's territory. It has nothing to do with me."
"Whether it has anything to do with you or not, you can explain it slowly when we get back to the police station. Right now, your problem isn't just the bank robbery."
"I..." Hei's face fell, and he silently lowered his head.
"Is Lanzi here? What about that Star Martial Warrior?"
"Take him back to the police station first. Later, call the Tianjian Bureau to pick him up. A Star Martial Warrior involved in drug trafficking... this won't end well."
"Sigh. He's a real embarrassment."
"There's nothing to be embarrassed about. A big forest harbors all kinds of birds. There are always a few bad apples among Star Martial Warriors."
"That..." A plaintive voice rose from the back seat.
"Shut up! Save it for the police station. You don't get to speak now."
"I just want to say one thing..." Hei's face was comically aggrieved.
"Officer, if I said... if I said this was my first time, and I hadn't even succeeded yet, would you believe me?"
"Ask the public if they believe that."
"But I really am... Ah, it was that guy called Stone who approached me. He said the business in Suzhou City is still untapped territory. He's from Jin City and plans to open up the Suzhou City market. He didn't ask for any money from me; I just had to sell for him, and we'd split the profits seven-three, his favor. An opportunity for profit without any capital investment came knocking. How could I resist such temptation? He was interested in my KTVs and bars, and I admired his strength. We had just struck a deal when you guys showed up... I swear on my life, that's the truth."
"Is your head still yours to swear on?" Wang Lan asked, glancing at the rearview mirror with a cold smile.
Hei shut his mouth.
Just as they reached the police station, people from the Tianjian Bureau arrived. It was the Zhang Yeqiu sisters, whom Wang Lan knew.
"You two? Why didn't Xu come?"
"Is our presence not good enough for you?" Zhang Xiaoxue retorted indifferently.
"Of course, it's fine. Such a minor issue hardly requires two red-robed Captains to come in person; the Bureau is taking this too seriously. Really, I should have delivered him myself," Wang Lan immediately conceded. Zhang Xiaoxue and Zhang Yeqiu were twins, but probably the least alike twins in the world. Though they shared identical faces, they presented completely different countenances to everyone.
"Don't mention Xu Shiyun," Zhang Yeqiu said. "That guy got promoted to Captain and is insufferably smug now. He's dragging the men through training and drills every day. Xiaoxue and I were free, so they sent us. Come on, let's go see that piece of trash."
Wang Lan led Zhang Yeqiu and her sister to the detention room. Though Stone's wounds had been stitched up, his limbs were essentially ruined.
Wang Lan had been ruthless this time. He hadn't merely injured Stone's limbs but had also seared the meridians within. Unless a Medical Attribute Star Martial Warrior treated him, he was definitely crippled. As for treating him... that was out of the question. Not executing trash like him on the spot was already merciful.
The door to the interrogation room opened. Stone slightly raised his head. When he saw the military-clad Zhang Yeqiu sisters, his pupils shrank sharply, a fleeting fear flickering in his eyes.
"It seems you recognize this uniform I'm wearing. That makes things easier. What's your name?"
"Ye Feng!"
"Hah! Still so defiant? You think you're Nie Feng, is that it?" Zhang Yeqiu's finger twitched, and a ripple emanated from Stone's position. Suddenly, with a series of creaks and groans, the chair beneath Ye Feng slowly deformed and then collapsed.
This display immediately surprised Wang Lan. The Zhang Yeqiu sisters were only twenty, four years older than him, but this demonstration of power gave Wang Lan a sense of their unfathomable depth. This was the Earth Attribute's Gravity Law, which Wang Lan had seen Hu Qing use before. But Hu Qing's manifestation had been immense and dramatic, while Zhang Yeqiu controlled the gravity around Ye Feng with precision, using just a flick of her finger. Standing right next to Zhang Yeqiu, Wang Lan felt nothing out of the ordinary.
The gravity intensified. Ye Feng's stitched wounds burst open again, and even the air around him seemed to distort under the immense pressure.
"I... I really am Ye Feng..."
"Still talking tough?"
"Sis, he says his name is Ye Feng, not that celebrity Nie Feng."
"Oh—" Zhang Yeqiu lifted her finger, and the gravity vanished.
"Where are you from? Your Star Martial Badge?"
"In my... in my clothes pocket." With a flick of Zhang Yeqiu's finger, a Star Martial Badge appeared in her hand.
She pulled out her phone to scan the code. BEEP.
"Your name really is Ye Feng, huh? Your parents gave you such a good name, just so you could traffic drugs? Linhai Military Region? Dismissed two years ago for insubordination. What happened after that? Tell me everything you did, honestly."
Ye Feng lay on the ground, gasping for breath. Hearing Zhang Yeqiu's questions, his breathing grew even heavier.
"You shouldn't be hoping for any luck now that you're in our hands, right? Keep gasping. Believe it or not, I can make you stop breathing altogether in a moment." As she spoke, Zhang Yeqiu's fingers lifted again.
"I'll talk! I'll confess! I'll confess everything!" Fear was evident on Ye Feng's face as he hurriedly spoke.
"Not long after I was dismissed, my former squad leader found me... He said... he said that we Star Martial Warriors make such great contributions to humanity, so why should we live like dogs? The military has its discipline, and we accept that. But when we're out pioneering, we eat pig slop, sleep in caves, and constantly worry if we'll even open our eyes the next morning. Honor, faith, responsibility—what are they? In the name of honor, faith, and responsibility, we end up living worse than animals, worse than the neighbor's dog! This world runs on money, not on Star Martial Warriors. So what if we give up being a Star Martial Warrior? Isn't it better to live comfortably with money?"
"And you believed him?"
"I started to hang out with him."
"Are you an idiot?" Zhang Yeqiu looked at Ye Feng with contempt. "Your records show your parents are healthy, and you have a younger brother and a younger sister. They are proud of you.
"You're a Star Martial Warrior. Your parents are entitled to free medical care and receive a monthly pension subsidy. If you had a wife, the state would arrange a job for her. Your children could attend school without paying a penny, and all their expenses from birth to adulthood would be covered by the state.
"Isn't that enough? The state has addressed all conceivable worries for Star Martial Warriors. What more could you be dissatisfied with? The state has arranged everything for Pioneers, hoping you will guard the Different Dimensional Space for the country. What more could you ask for?
"Living worse than a dog? Who feeds a dog when it's sick or hungry? Living worse than ordinary people? Do you know how much it costs an ordinary person to buy a house in Suzhou City, compared to a Pioneer? You're ungrateful when receiving benefits but full of complaints when it's time to fulfill your duties..."
"Sis, why bother wasting words on trash like this? Just kill him. This piece of garbage doesn't deserve to live."
"Talk. Who was your squad leader? Who else is behind you?"
Wang Lan folded his arms, looking amused at the Star Martial Warrior before him. He might be the most spineless Star Martial Warrior I've ever seen, Wang Lan thought. Interrogating him took no effort at all; he spilled everything like beans from a bursting pod.
His gang consisted of seven people, all Star Martial Warriors dismissed from the military. In the army, such individuals were referred to as 'rust.' They were trash, unable to be forged into steel, and their presence in the military would only corrupt others.
The other three had gone to Xu City, Chang City, and Tong City. Of those remaining, two were at the headquarters in Jin City, and one was in Nankun, responsible for drug importation. In short, they were a bunch of unreflective societal malcontents who, on a whim, decided to dabble in an extremely high-risk industry where one misstep meant death.
Wang Lan was confident that their operation hadn't even truly begun. Even if it had, it would be uprooted within a year.
Zhang Yeqiu finished the interrogation and drove the man back to the Tianjian Bureau. Hei's case, however, was a matter for the Major Crimes Unit.
Zhang Yeqiu's interrogation progressed rapidly, but things were stalled with Hei.
No matter how Hu Qing pressed him, Hei refused to admit any involvement in the Flower Snake Six's bank robbery, insisting he knew nothing.
"Zhao Laohei, I'm trying to be reasonable here, so don't push it! We have ways to make you wish you were dead without leaving a single mark. Don't force my hand."
"Officer, I'm telling the truth! Why would I bother? I lost control of those six guys long ago. Besides, each of them makes millions a year—why would *they* bother? Robbing a bank with submachine guns? Are they filming a movie?"
Hu Qing frowned, a seed of doubt planted in his mind. Zhao Laohei's explanation did have some merit. The entire bank robbery, from start to finish, seemed like an elaborate prank; stealing money didn't appear to be the primary goal. Yet, they had indeed stolen several million and killed over a dozen people.
Wang Lan returned after seeing off Zhang Yeqiu and Zhang Xiaoxue and happened to overhear this part of the conversation.
"Have the autopsy reports for those six people come out yet?"
"Not yet. What about it?"
"His words made me realize something was off too," Wang Lan said. "I shot an arrow and killed one of them in the car. Normally, the driver should have panicked. But he was very calm and just slammed on the accelerator, trying to ram me. Then, after I shot out a tire, the vehicle overturned. But... the strange thing is, both people in that vehicle died. An armored truck should have some shock-absorption features, shouldn't it?"
"Report! The autopsy reports are in! The members of the Flower Snake Six gang have been dead for over twenty-four hours!"
"What kind of joke is this?" Hu Qing exploded. "They were robbing a bank and killing people twelve hours ago, and now you're telling me they've been dead for over twenty-four hours? Were the robbers corpses?"
Wang Lan looked up at the female forensic medical examiner. "Are you sure it's been over twenty-four hours?"
"Positive!"
"Hu Qing, let's transfer this case to the Tianjian Bureau," Wang Lan said. "I'm sure... there's something very wrong here."
