Chapter 150: Strike on the Secret Base
"Director Wang?"
Wang Lan's soft call brought Wang Qianfeng back from his daze.
"Oh, I'll call the Director right away. You wait here for a moment."
Wang Qianfeng returned to his desk and picked up the red phone to dial.
It was supposed to be a brief conversation, but Wang Lan hadn't expected Wang Qianfeng and Lu Zhao to talk for so long. From their conversation, he vaguely heard the term "Shadow Guard Office."
Wang Lan feigned ignorance, while Xu Shiyun looked up, counting the patterns on the suspended ceiling.
"The Bureau has had a huge workload lately and is short-staffed. You'll have to wait a bit longer; the Director is arranging for more personnel," Wang Qianfeng said after hanging up the phone.
"Wang Lan, how likely do you think it is that place is a Demon Clan base?"
"Without more information, I can't make a judgment."
"Could it be the Central Command for the Demon Clan's spies in Suzhou City?"
Wang Lan's mouth twitched slightly. You dare to think that way? You really think the Demon Clan would be so foolish? To establish a Central Command for spying? What if they were exposed and all rounded up in one fell swoop?
KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK— The sound of knocking interrupted the room. He MingXue pushed the door open and barged in.
"He Lao'er, what are you doing?" Wang Qianfeng was about to open the door when it suddenly swung open, startling him. He scolded with a dark expression.
"Old Wang, has Wang Lan discovered traces of the Demon Clan again?"
"Are you snooping on the Intelligence Agency's secrets?"
"Scram! Who in the Bureau doesn't know about the important matter Wang Lan just reported? And who is Wang Lan? Director Zhang of Jin City personally picked him as the mascot. For the past six months, both your Intelligence Agency and the Action Department have been living off the fat of the land, all thanks to Wang Lan's repeated discoveries of Demon Clan traces.
"In the last few days, how many accolades have you earned? How many big fish have you caught? You should be content by now."
"Oh? Why should I be content with what's mine?" Wang Qianfeng replied indifferently, picking at a toothpick as he looked at He MingXue.
"Aren't we brothers anymore?"
"Even blood brothers keep clear accounts."
"What do you want?"
"I really like that pair of sisters under your command..."
"Impossible!" He MingXue exploded on the spot, like an enraged lion.
Wang Lan's face changed instantly. He quickly composed himself, observing silently and sighing inwardly. The lives of these bigwigs are indeed colorful. If I heard something I shouldn't have, might I be silenced?
"Remember, you're the one who said it!" Wang Qianfeng chuckled unconcernedly.
"This is the Director's intention. I'm here simply to look after our relationship."
"Oh? The Director's intention? Fine, I'll go ask the Director right now. I can understand sharing the Intelligence Agency's credit with the Action Department, but giving it to the Law Enforcement Department? What's the meaning of that? The Law Enforcement Department handles internal affairs, not external ones."
"Wait a minute!" He MingXue, seething with anger but unable to lash out, forced an ugly smile. "Let's discuss this. How about a different arrangement?"
"Those two sisters are perfectly in sync; together, they're as effective as a small squad. Sending them to your Law Enforcement Department would be casting pearls before swine. They deserve better opportunities for development. What can your department offer them? Interrogating prisoners? Lecturing and brainwashing the men?"
"The Tianjian Bureau is going to be restructured soon, and the Law Enforcement Department might become the Shadow Guard Office."
"Who knows when that will happen? You expect them to waste several years waiting for that?"
He MingXue winced, but finally clenched his teeth. "Fine! I'll hand them over to you. But let me make this clear: if you train them well, they're yours. If not, send them back to me."
"That's more like it!" Wang Qianfeng playfully patted He MingXue's shoulder. "I'm entrusting Wang Lan and Xu Shiyun to you. Don't let them get hurt; it would be like losing my own two arms."
"Get lost! Am I that kind of person?" He MingXue huffed and turned to leave. "Wang Lan, Xu Shiyun, assemble downstairs."
"Yes, sir!"
TAT-TAT-TAT—
"Reporting!"
"Come in!"
"Reporting, Director Wang, a confidential order from the Director." The person said, opening a file folder and placing the order in front of Wang Qianfeng.
"Old Wang, what's this confidential order from the Director?"
"Mind your discipline. A confidential order is confidential. Can I show it to you? Aren't you leaving yet? Don't let those Demon Clan brats get away."
"Understood." He MingXue flashed out of the room, with Wang Lan and Xu Shiyun quickly following.
When Wang Qianfeng was alone in the office, he suddenly grinned.
The Shadow Guard Office is preparing to launch. This operation is assigned to the Law Enforcement Department as a test. You are to secretly observe and assess the Law Enforcement Department's operational capabilities, then provide an evaluation.
He Lao'er, get ready for your exam...
Once again, seven or eight cars roared out of the Tianjian Bureau, getting green lights all the way as they sped onto the expressway.
Wang Lan and Xu Shiyun sat in the back, while a pair of twin sisters sat in the front.
Since they weren't familiar with each other, the atmosphere in the car was somewhat subdued. Although Wang Lan appeared to be looking out the window, he occasionally glanced at the female driver from the corner of his eye, and she, in turn, kept sizing him up through the rearview mirror.
Another female driver who doesn't pay attention to the road.
Wang Lan tightened his seatbelt and reached out to grip the handrail firmly.
"Let's get acquainted. I'm Zhang Yeqiu, and this is my younger sister, Zhang Xiaoxue. Our father's surname is Zhang, and our mother's maiden name is Ye. We were born on a day with light snow—Xiaoxue. You're Wang Lan, right? Your name has been coming up frequently at the Bureau lately. You and Lige are known as the 'Suzhou Bureau's Twin Elites'."
Zhang Yeqiu seemed very talkative. Her voice, crisp and sweet, was like a warm breeze instantly dispelling the somber atmosphere in the car.
Wang Lan asked with a bewildered expression, "What kind of ridiculous title is that? And why am I paired with Lige? If anyone's paired with him, shouldn't it be the guy next to me?"
"Xu Shiyun is practically an uncle! How could an uncle be our idol? Besides, he's not even handsome."
"I'm only thirty-two! How does that make me an uncle? And when it comes to women's aesthetic sense, there's serious disagreement. Ten women will have ten different standards of beauty. Mine is a mature handsomeness!"
"Thirty-two isn't an uncle? Little brother Wang Lan here is only seventeen."
"But... even so, why compare me with Lige? We haven't been shipped as a CP or anything, have we?"
"It was the girls at the Bureau who decided it! Before, Lige was the one shining solo, with tons of young fans. But Lige is the 'keep your distance' type, so after you made your mark, a lot of them switched to being your fans."
"Is that so? What an honor," Wang Lan said, his tone dripping with sarcasm. He hadn't even realized he had idol potential. Though, whenever he looked in the mirror, he did think he was quite handsome. Objectively speaking, however, Wang Lan merely had a somewhat scholarly air about him; he wasn't conventionally handsome.
"So, who do you two admire?" Xu Shiyun chimed in.
"Of course, it's Wang Lan! My family is quite pragmatic; supporting a mascot brings good luck. See? We only got back from our advanced training a month ago, and we already have a mission."
"By the way, how old are you? You don't look much older than me," Wang Lan asked curiously.
"Hmph! How rude! Asking a lady her age right after meeting her..." Zhang Yeqiu feigned annoyance.
"No, I'm just curious. How did you become Captains at such a young age? Aren't promotions in the Tianjian Bureau supposed to be difficult?"
"Heh... such an innocent little brother, aren't you? Blushing so easily? We've been with the Tianjian Bureau for five years. Becoming Captains in five years isn't that fast, you know."
"Five years? Alright, I get it." Wang Lan turned to look out the window.
"Hey, what's with that look? Are you implying we're old hags?"
"Not at all!"
"Your expression says otherwise! I'm not even twenty yet, okay?"
"You joined the Tianjian Bureau at fifteen? Didn't you go to school?"
"School? Of course, we did. Is there a problem with graduating from university at fourteen?"
Wang Lan's mouth twitched. Anyone who could ask that question was the problematic one.
But Wang Lan wasn't particularly shocked by this. If it weren't for that damned system quest, and if he hadn't known he would awaken as a Star Martial Warrior, with his abilities, skipping two or three grades would have been no problem for him. Passing the national college entrance exam at twelve and then getting a master's degree in another year or two wouldn't have been difficult.
The car was fast, but the driving was steady.
As they chatted and became more familiar with each other, Wang Lan's group arrived near their destination.
Zhang Yeqiu and Zhang Xiaoxue were both legendary prodigies, perhaps even more terrifyingly talented than Jiang Xinyu. Zhang Yeqiu possessed dual Fire and Earth attributes, while Zhang Xiaoxue, like Jiang Xinyu, had an Ice attribute.
With the sisters' natural talents, there was no need for them to rush their advancement by taking the Star Martial college entrance exam at thirteen. At that age, they were already at the Star Shine Stage, which was quite remarkable.
Had they progressed normally, reaching the Star Cloud Stage by seventeen wouldn't have been difficult. Graduating high school at the Star Cloud Stage would have greatly increased their chances of entering one of the four great Star Martial Academies. Yet, they chose a path incomprehensible to ordinary people.
They took the Star Martial college entrance exam at thirteen and were admitted to the Jin City Star Martial Academy. They graduated within a year and then joined the Tianjian Bureau. They rose to the rank of Captain in five years. Although they claimed it was reasonable, it was still fast compared to Xu Shiyun, who had also been a Captain in the Tianjian Bureau for six years. This showed that the sisters' promotion rate within the Tianjian Bureau was indeed considered rapid.
Once they arrived, the men from the Law Enforcement Department concealed their vehicles and then jumped out, pumped up as if they'd been injected with adrenaline, ready and awaiting orders.
"Scout!" He MingXue ordered in a deep voice.
"Total of twenty individuals. Five are on guard outside; the rest are inside, appearing to do office work. A sign on the second-floor entrance reads, 'Gold Star Network Technology Co., Ltd.'"
"Who would open a company in a place like this? Only twenty people? Infiltrate."
As soon as he finished speaking, the Law Enforcement Department members vanished into the earth one by one, disappearing as silently as Tierra Mice.
"Hey, isn't anyone going to take me?" Wang Lan exclaimed.
Xu Shiyun patted Wang Lan's shoulder. "I'm here."
With that, he grabbed Wang Lan's arm, and WHOOSH, they also disappeared.
The sensation of moving underground using Earth Attribute Star Martial Skills was strange. The solid earth around them seemed to flow like water, only a bit thicker.
Textbooks did describe the characteristics of various elemental Star Martial Skills. The smoothness of an Earth Attribute Star Martial Warrior's subterranean travel directly depended on their skill level. Highly skilled individuals felt no resistance when burrowing into the earth, moving through it as easily as running on the surface.
However, those with insufficient Cultivation Level felt like they were wading through thick mud, facing significant resistance and slow movement. It was like the one Wang Lan had killed previously; if that person had been faster moving through the earth, Wang Lan's vertical slicing attack wouldn't have hit him.
Wang Lan was led by Xu Shiyun, unsure how far they had traveled, when they quietly surfaced. By then, the men from the Law Enforcement Department were already engaged in combat with the enemy.
However, the scene of the battle was somewhat difficult for Wang Lan and Xu Shiyun to process.
It was completely one-sided!
They had expected to catch a big fish, but it turned out to be just a few small fry that had slipped through the net.
The exposed members of the Demon Clan did indeed fight back, but their strength was mediocre. The strongest among them was merely at the Star Cloud Stage, and the others were at the Star Shine Stage. The Law Enforcement Department had dispatched thirty men—more than a dozen at the Star Cloud Stage, plus one at the Galaxy Stage to oversee things. They had cast a wide net, only to catch these few small shrimp.
Watching his subordinates make short work of the Demon Clan, He MingXue didn't smile. Instead, he glanced with slight resentment at Wang Lan, who was slowly emerging from the ground.
