Chapter 132: You Also Died Because of Underestimating the Enemy
"What's going on?"
"Did some idiot accidentally bump into the circuit breaker?"
"Could it be Hu Lang?"
"Impossible. He's been shot so many times, he's probably dead by now. But no matter what, we must find that item."
With a Bluetooth earpiece, Wang Lan listened to Xiao Ai's report on enemy distribution. By the time he reached this floor, Wang Lan no longer needed Xiao Ai's reports.
The sudden blackout was a blatantly abnormal situation. Truly elite warriors would have immediately sought cover. Not only did these men fail to do so, but they even felt like chatting?
To call them a ragtag bunch would be a compliment; they were a group of idiots who didn't even know how to spell 'death'.
In an instant, Wang Lan's figure transformed into a streak of light at the stairwell entrance.
"What was that?" A cry of surprise erupted instantly from the corridor opposite.
Star Martial Skills were all well and good, but there was one problem—their damn light effects couldn't be turned off. Wang Lan didn't understand the deal with these light effects. Unless one inherently possessed stealth, other Star Martial Skills, or talents for hiding, activating a Star Martial Skill would not only cause Spirit Power Fluctuations around the user but also generate light effects as distinct and dazzling as fireflies in the night.
When Wang Lan burst out of the stairwell, the others weren't blind; they all saw him. But seeing him was one thing; reacting in time was another.
Almost at the exact moment they managed to draw their guns, Wang Lan weaved through the four men before him as nimbly as a butterfly flitting through flowers.
One punch each, and the four of them didn't even manage to utter a complete sentence before Wang Lan knocked them out cold.
Wang Lan immediately deactivated the Star Martial Skill. His figure vanished like a Ghost, disappearing with several swift flashes.
These four intruders lacked experience, but I feel like I've also made a basic mistake. Was there a need to use the Star Moon Sword Dance Star Martial Skill against these ordinary people? Wouldn't it have been better to just knock them out under the cover of darkness?
Thinking this, Wang Lan rapidly adjusted his tactics. The voice in his earpiece reported more people making their way up the stairs, two floors below him.
Each of them carried a tactical flashlight.
Wang Lan tiptoed silently and swiftly down the stairs, then hid in a corner. In contrast, the three people below made noise intermittently as they climbed.
"Hiss—damn it, I kicked the handrail!"
"Can you shut the hell up? You scared the crap out of me."
"Damn it, don't shine that flashlight in my eyes! I can't see a thing in this pitch-black darkness! Where's the damn circuit breaker? How are we supposed to find anyone if we can't even find an exit in this mess?"
THUD! THUD! THUD!
Three dull thumps, and the world went silent.
From the seventh floor down to the underground parking garage, Wang Lan moved like a Ghost dancing in the night. Xiao Ai had reported thirty hostiles, and Wang Lan silently neutralized every one of them in the darkness. His descent was as swift as lightning and flowed seamlessly, taking less than half an hour.
Wang Lan commanded, "Lights on!"
CLICK!
All the lights in the underground parking garage flickered on.
Before Wang Lan lay five or six men, scattered about. Each had been knocked into a deep unconsciousness by a single punch. Their flashlights lay strewn across the ground.
DING!
The elevator doors suddenly slid open on the second basement level of the parking garage. Seven or eight men, cursing loudly, rushed out.
"Damn, that scared me to death! Why did the power suddenly go out? We almost got trapped in there..."
THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!
One by one, as they emerged, Wang Lan struck them down. In under three seconds, all seven or eight men were unconscious at the elevator entrance.
CLAP. CLAP. CLAP.
Just as Wang Lan was deciding his next move, crisp applause echoed through the garage.
Wang Lan's expression changed drastically. He swiftly turned around, warily staring at a middle-aged man who, despite the cold winter, wore only a short, traditional-style jacket over his bare upper body, his muscular arms exposed.
The man's face bore a cross-shaped scar, and his hair, the color of fire, spiked upwards. His brawny arms were covered in blue tattoos.
The man looked at Wang Lan mockingly, stepping closer bit by bit. With each step, the intensely powerful aura of a Star Cloud Stage expert emanated from him.
This man is a master, definitely a superior opponent for me right now. Without activating my Phoenix Form, I might not be able to beat him. But I'm reluctant to use the Phoenix Form... Besides, I can't be sure if there's anyone else lurking in the building.
Xiao Ai hadn't warned Wang Lan about this man at all. While Wang Lan was still trying to figure out how to deal with this newcomer, the man spoke first.
"I never expected to accidentally bump into a Star Martial Warrior. You're quite young. Still a student, I presume? If you're a student, you should be focusing on your studies, 'studying hard and improving every day,' as they say. What are you doing playing hero so late at night? Think you're in some White Eagle Country action flick?"
A glint flashed in Wang Lan's eyes. This guy clearly didn't expect me. He probably had no idea I was here before entering the Xinyu Building. That explains why those thugs I took down seemed so fearless and brazen when they entered the building.
"Your words don't make sense. A bunch of unidentified people broke into my home. What, you expect me to pretend I didn't see?"
"Your home?" The man looked at Wang Lan with doubt.
"The Xinyu Building is mine. You barge into my property and act like you're in the right?"
"My apologies for this. We were chasing an enemy, and he fled in here. We pursued without much thought. Little brother, perhaps you could help us? If you hand him over, we'll pretend tonight never happened. How about it?"
"Pretend it never happened? I can't just pretend it never happened. What happened today is clearly your fault. Even if I slaughtered all these Muggles, it would be considered self-defense, wouldn't it?"
Wang Lan instantly shifted his demeanor, adopting the persona of someone who didn't want trouble but had been innocently dragged into a messy situation.
"How do you want to settle this?"
"You trespassed on my property and caused considerable damage to the Xinyu Building. Demanding a few million in compensation isn't unreasonable, is it?"
"Never mind a few million; I'd give you ten million. But you have to hand over the person we're looking for."
"I have no idea who entered my home. I was just doing my homework when your intrusion triggered the alarm system. What does the person you're looking for look like? I don't want to get involved in your business. You pay the money, take the person, and it'll be like you were never here."
"His appearance? I have a photo right here." Saying this, the man reached into his pocket.
But in that instant, Wang Lan's figure became a streak of light, charging at him. He activated Butterfly Passing Through Flowers, instantly lunging forward. The ten-meter distance was covered in less than half a second.
The man was still in the process of pulling out the photo, completely unprepared for Wang Lan's sudden assault. By the time he realized what was happening, Wang Lan was already striking at his face.
The man proved himself to be a battle-hardened expert, immediately countering even in such a dire situation.
A concrete wall erupted before him, enclosing him like two halves of a 'Kinder Egg'. Normally, such a response to a surprise attack would be flawless and unassailable.
Unfortunately for him, he was facing Wang Lan—someone who defied all common sense.
Almost instantly, Wang Lan switched Star Martial Skills. A Flame Sword materialized from his hands. He crossed his palms, and a vertical Flame Sword formed before him.
Like a streak of light, Wang Lan's figure skimmed past the 'Kinder Egg' shell, his Flame Sword etching a perfectly straight, narrow gash upon the ground.
As the Flame Sword extinguished, a sharp CRACK echoed from the 'Kinder Egg' construct behind Wang Lan. It then began to crumble, like a shattered eggshell.
Inside the remains of the earthen shell, the man's lower body was already sinking into the ground. Unfortunately for him, his attempt to escape underground was too slow. He had never anticipated Wang Lan would unleash a vertical Flame Sword so instantaneously.
Thus, as the Flame Sword swept past, it cleanly bisected his upper body.
Wang Lan's shift from feigned negotiation to sudden attack was utterly without warning. The man had utterly failed to anticipate Wang Lan's combat tactics. The swift kill was a result of Wang Lan's decisiveness, a touch of luck, and, crucially, the man's underestimation of his opponent.
He would never have dreamed that a seemingly ordinary high school student possessed not only the strength of the Star Shine Stage but had also mastered two incredibly lethal A-rank Star Martial Skills.
What's more, he couldn't have imagined that both Star Martial Skills had been cultivated to such a profound level.
Thus, this early-stage Star Cloud Stage Earth Attribute Star Martial Warrior lost pitifully and died a miserable death.
Even as he was bisected, an expression of utter disbelief and shock was etched on the man's face. Why the hell use a vertical Flame Sword? Wouldn't a horizontal one have worked?
System Notification: Cross-level kill completed. Reward: 1,000 Experience Points, 20 Skill Points.
BANG!
The notification in his mind chimed almost simultaneously with the sharp crack of a nearby gunshot.
Wang Lan's body jerked violently. He looked down in shock as a bullet hole blossomed on his chest, right over his heart. Blood gushed out.
Clutching his chest, Wang Lan collapsed, a bewildered expression on his face.
Blood flowed through his fingers in torrents.
Firearms could still inflict fatal harm upon Star Martial Warriors. At least before one reached the Galaxy Stage, a rifle's lethality was comparable to a B-rank pure-attack Star Martial Skill.
Wang Lan hadn't anticipated another hidden assassin. This one had successfully evaded Xiao Ai's camera surveillance and fired a deadly shot when Wang Lan was completely defenseless.
From behind a load-bearing pillar in the garage, a young man dressed in black slowly emerged. He seemed to defy gravity, walking on the ceiling as if it were solid ground.
The distinct sound of footsteps echoed from the ceiling. Reaching a point directly above Wang Lan, the young man dropped down, landing before the corpse of the middle-aged Star Martial Warrior Wang Lan had killed—the one whose lower body was still embedded in the earth.
The young man slowly removed his hat, his low voice drifting out.
"I always knew your arrogance would be your undoing; I just didn't expect it to be this soon. But don't worry, I've avenged you. We were supposed to leave together after this last job... Looks like we're both leaving, just not together anymore."
Suddenly, the young man in black felt the ground beneath him give way, his body lurching downwards as if he'd stepped off an unseen ledge.
Astonishment flickered across the young man's face.
There wasn't a pit here before, was there? How did I suddenly fall into one?
Then, in an instant, he realized it wasn't a pit. His legs had been cleanly severed at the thighs.
While astonishment still painted his features, another streak of flame flashed before his eyes. His arms flew off, like discarded toys, landing some distance away.
Only then did the searing pain from his severed limbs register in the young man's brain. His face twisted into a grotesque, terrifying grimace.
"AAAAARGH—!"
A Shadow fell over the young man's face. Wang Lan, who he'd thought dead, now stood before him, completely unscathed. The young man's gaze instinctively darted to where the gunshot wound on Wang Lan's chest should have been.
What the actual f*ck... Not even a scratch? Then what was all that blood gushing like a fountain just moments ago?
At that moment, a single, eloquent thought dominated the young man's mind: FML.
"Looks like you'll be dying from underestimation too," Wang Lan's low voice rumbled, laced with thick killing intent. "And it seems you will be 'leaving together' after all."
