Chapter 10
Old Nielsen’s Request
[Since it’s possible that they are pirates, why are you still helping them?] Roger was puzzled.
In theory, the islanders should avoid pirates, so why does Lina have such a casual attitude?
Lina explained to Roger upon hearing his question.
It turns out that the five major seas are all under the jurisdiction of a unified maritime country called the Thousand Islands Kingdom.
Within the five major seas, pirates who cause trouble and plunder the islanders will be wanted and pursued by the kingdom’s naval fleet. Therefore, ordinary pirates generally do not randomly plunder the islands, at most, they just rest on the islands.
Of course, there are also some extremely wicked pirates who are fearless of the kingdom’s naval fleet, but their probability is relatively small.
From this perspective, the five major seas are relatively peaceful.
Indeed, it’s like a beginner’s village. Roger pondered.
[However, if you leave the five major seas in the future, you should be careful at all times. Pirates outside the five major seas do not have as many scruples.] Lina reminded Roger after she finished bandaging him.
Roger nodded. After chatting with Lina for a while, he left the clinic.
Before leaving, Roger deliberately changed his perspective and took a look at Lina.
She had a bright blue, silky short hair, an intellectual and sweet face, and slender legs that couldn’t be hidden even under the white coat.
This only strengthened Roger’s determination.
My bed…no, my ship needs a ship doctor!
Roger thought.
After taking care of his wound, Roger went to Felix’s shipyard to continue learning skills.
…
After one night, the sun rose as usual in the Gentle Breeze Sea, shining brightly and the sea breeze was gentle.
By the dock, Roger was about to prepare for his voyage when Old Nielsen called out to him.
[Roger, how long can you hold your breath underwater?]
Roger was a little surprised by the sudden question and scratched his head, wondering why Old Nielsen was asking about this.
After thinking for a moment, he gave a conservative number.
[About five minutes, I guess.]
Old Nielsen fell silent for a moment, looked at Roger for a while, and then said in a deep voice.
[Can you do me a favor?]
[Sure.]
Roger replied without asking what Old Nielsen needed him to do, simply nodding his head.
Old Nielsen had helped him a lot, so wherever he could help, Roger would do his best to fulfill it.
Seeing Roger readily agreeing, Old Nielsen didn’t say anything, patted his shoulder, and then boarded his small boat, picking up the oars.
[Let’s go.]
Roger thought for a moment, carried Orange from the boat and wanted to leave it in the small wooden house.
But to his surprise, as soon as Roger closed the door, Orange squeezed out from the gap in the window and came to Roger’s feet.
“Meow~”
Orange meowed angrily, as if saying, “You think you can fly solo now that you’ve grown wings?”
Then it jumped back onto the small boat and found a comfortable spot to curl up and sleep peacefully.
Roger was speechless, but he didn’t insist on keeping Orange and also boarded the small boat.
Old Nielsen saw this situation and smoked, not knowing what he was thinking.
Before long, an old man, a young man, and a cat drifted in a small boat in one direction.
[Aren’t you curious about what I’m asking you to help with?]
Old Nielsen turned his back to Roger and exhaled smoke.
[Of course, I’m curious. I’m waiting for you to say it.]
Roger replied sincerely.
Old Nielsen remained silent for a moment, but didn’t say much, and slowly spoke.
“In fact, Sea Serpent Island is guarded by two people.”
“One is me, and the other is Holly, an old lady who likes to court death. She’s also my wife…”
Then, Old Nielsen began to tell a story from the past.
He and Holly grew up together since childhood, like childhood sweethearts.
Holly had a carefree and cheerful personality, loved adventure, while Old Nielsen was shy and kind.
They worked as sailors together, sailed the seas, fought pirates, and searched for treasure.
In the end, they returned to this native island to guard the pier, watching young people like Roger set sail towards the rising sun…
Seemingly because of mentioning his wife, Old Nielsen, who was usually concise, became talkative, occasionally mentioning his own opinions.
“This wife of mine loves to drink and always makes the house smell of alcohol. She’s also untidy, careless, and always manages to lose money…”
“But I’ve always known that she just spends all the money on drinks or loses it in the tavern…”
“She also loves flowers, especially sunflowers. I once planted a few for her, but she kept pouring alcohol into the flower bed, and the sunflowers withered…”
“And this old lady especially likes to do dangerous things, like fishing for sea serpents with her bare hands,” Old Nielsen laughed.
Although his face showed disdain and helplessness when talking about Holly, he couldn’t hide the sadness and love.
After a long time, Old Nielsen fell silent for a moment.
“But, on a certain day five years ago, she excitedly told me that she had discovered a cave near a small island and wanted to explore it.”
“At that time, I was busy taking care of Lina and didn’t pay much attention to her words.”
“But the next morning, she left a letter and set off alone with her equipment.”
“Since then, I haven’t seen her again…”
“A year later, I found her bottle on a small island, but I didn’t find the cave on the island.”
At this point, Old Nielsen lowered his head and gazed at the waves churning beneath the small boat.
Hearing this, Roger understood.
No wonder Old Nielsen asked him how long he could hold his breath.
The purpose was to find the location of the cave mentioned by Holly.
Meanwhile, in Roger’s field of vision, a small island slowly appeared.
This island was indeed quite small, with a diameter of at most a dozen meters. However, it had several exposed, sturdy gray rocks, with some algae at the bottom, and a few pebbles buried on the outer beach.
The two of them moored the small boat on the shore of the island and tidied up their belongings.
“Roger, you’re a good kid. Although I really want to find Holly, your safety is more important.”
“If we can’t find her, get ashore quickly, understand?” Old Nielsen’s expression was serious.
Roger didn’t say much in response, just nodded.
Then he took a deep breath and plunged into the sea. After entering the water, Roger retrieved an octopus from his inventory and took control of it, splitting up to search in the sea.
Soon, Roger had a rough view of the entire underwater layout of this island.
In reality, calling it an island was not entirely accurate. To be precise, it was a stone mountain in the sea. As he delved deeper into the sea, Roger saw steep, exposed gray rocks and, in one direction, an abyss-like underwater cliff, dark and icy cold, seemingly bottomless.
Roger believed the cave was likely beneath this abyss. However, he didn’t rush to enter it and instead explored around the island.
Before long, one of the octopus avatars discovered a highly concealed, pitch-black cave entrance amid a dense bed of seaweed.
Found it!
