Chapter 280: Squeal Like a Pig
Hearing the loud, nasal grunt, the other red pandas basking in the sun poked their heads out to look over!
Red Bean lay on a forked perch, her butt propped up by a branch, as she propped up her upper body with her arms and turned her head to watch intently.
And like a salted fish left out to dry, Lingling had all four limbs and tail dangling below, with her chin resting on the broad perch, her head tilted ever so slightly to clear the branches in front and get a better view.
Chestnut and Shuaishuai both stood up at the same time, flailing about with haphazard punches. Chestnut quickly tackled Shuaishuai to the ground, and the two red pandas began to scuffle on the edge of the bush, "huffing" and "puffing" with indignant grunts.
One moment Chestnut was on top, the next Shuaishuai was, rolling back and forth.
The pig-like grunts were quite intense!
"Watch me wash you! One slap will make your head disappear!"
"You make me so angry! I'll bite you!"
Soon the two furry balls had tumbled behind the bushes, only their thick, long tails flapping about wildly.
"Wow!"
The tourists found it quite amusing; they had never seen red pandas fight before!
It looked rather clumsy, like little kids fighting in kindergarten.
But some tourists expressed concern, "Won't there be trouble? Where's the animal keeper? Hurry up and go break it up."
Not only had the tourists never seen this spectacle, but the red pandas themselves had never seen such a scene either!
Lingling, who had been laying flat like a dried fish, was drawn by the skirmish between the two 'piglets' and climbed from the perch, running to the other end of it, leaning out over the bushes to get a focused bird's-eye view!
The two 'piglets' scuffled behind the bushes for three to four seconds before Shuaishuai quickly got up and, with his short legs, ran off, with Chestnut continuing the pursuit from behind.
Mingming lay on the flat, large stone, watching as the two red 'pigs' dragging their long tails ran across the grassland in front of her, her head following the action from left to right, and after a while, from right back to left!
At this moment, Guan Shan arrived at the exhibit, witnessing their chase and sternly scolded like a headteacher, "Hey, what are you doing? Why are you fighting? Chestnut, no chasing!"
The two red pandas, noticing the arrival of the animal keeper and being scolded so fiercely, and their names called, Chestnut finally stopped.
She lay down on the ground, her mouth still open, looking fierce.
She scratched her front limbs with her back paws, as if muttering to herself, "Hmph, with your pathetic skills, you're only good for scratching my itch! If it weren't for the apple feeder holding me back, I'd keep hitting you!"
Shuaishuai, seeing that Chestnut had stopped pursuing, kept moving and quickly scrambled up a tree, hiding among the dense leaves!
It appeared that in this battle, Chestnut had the upper hand!
The other red pandas paused for a moment, then continued to lie back down to bask in the sun.
After stopping the two red pandas, Guan Shan was also a bit worried; although red pandas are usually gentle, they can be fierce when they actually fight.
They'd always gotten along well, so why did they suddenly start fighting today?
After watching the red pandas for a while, making sure they didn't seem intent on fighting again, she exited through the staff passage.
The incident wasn't severe, so she didn't call Fang Ye but sent a message instead.
"Director, Chestnut and Shuaishuai just had a fight..."
In the office, Fang Ye frowned upon receiving the message and sat up straight to reply, "Did they get hurt?"
"They shouldn't have, it's their first fight. The two chased each other for a while, and the reason is still unclear."
"As long as it's nothing serious."
Fang Ye stroked his chin, pondering.
It wasn't the mating season for red pandas yet, so could it be a territorial dispute?
The space in the exhibit, though only three hundred square meters, was more than sufficient for five red pandas!
The space was large enough, had shelters, and the enrichment was varied; they shouldn't be fighting in theory.
However, animals are not like programs; they have their own social relationships and moods.
Perhaps Chestnut and Shuaishuai had always had a mediocre relationship, and today one of them got annoyed, leading to a scuffle, thus the fight.
It had to be said, his guess was quite accurate!
Lan Li asked curiously, "Director, what happened?"
Fang Ye replied, "Chestnut and Shuaishuai had a fight just now, but it should be no big deal."
An idea suddenly sprung to mind!
Could it be that red pandas find staying in one environment a bit dull?
What if I took them out to play, to see new scenery and relax a little?
In the panda breeding centers, red pandas are allowed to roam free!
Visitors can admire the red pandas up close, watch them walk by their feet, take photos, but they're not allowed to touch.
In some overseas zoos, there are even penguin parades that are very popular with visitors.
Animal keepers lead the way, with a line of penguins waddling behind in a queue.
Visitors keep their distance on both sides of the pathway, watching the penguins march through the middle!
Taking the red pandas to meet other animals would not just give them a novel experience, but would be the same for the other animals too.
They're all tired of seeing the same old bipeds every day, and suddenly here comes a little chubby red pig!
Looking at each other through the glass would definitely be interesting.
Fang Ye thought of this scene and couldn't help but smile.
He stood up from his seat and called to Lan Li, "Let's go check it out together! We might as well do a live broadcast while we're at it."
The biggest challenge in taking red pandas out is whether they'll get scared and run off when they see other visitors!
But today was a weekday, and there weren't many visitors, plus with his soothing skill, there shouldn't be any problems.
"Oh!"
...
Red panda exhibit!
Fang Ye asked Guan Shan, "Were they fighting when I came by earlier?"
Guan Shan shook her head, "No! It was just a momentary conflict."
Fang Ye activated the Eye of Observation and scanned the few red pandas in the exhibit.
Chestnut had returned to its perch and was lying down while Shuaishuai was still hidden among the leaves in the tree.
[Red Panda: Chestnut
Mood: Depressed]
Although Chestnut had a minor victory in the fight, it didn't feel happy about it!
It was basking in the sun quite comfortably when it suddenly had to fight. Does this mean they're enemies now?
Seeing each other frequently, what would happen in the future? Did it go too far today?
It felt a slight worry in its heart!
[Red Panda: Shuaishuai Continue reading on empire
Mood: Angry]
Shuaishuai, having lost the fight, was even more upset! It had lost face in front of Red Bean and Lingling, the two pretty sisters!
[Red Panda: Red Bean
Mood: Zoning out
Status: Hungry]
Fang Ye was speechless, how could it be that the other red pandas weren't affected by the fight, just obsessing over their next meal!
Mingming and Lingling felt a bit uneasy.
Fang Ye pondered, who should he take out to play?
He couldn't soothe them all if he took them out together.
Since Shuaishuai and Chestnut had fought today, he wouldn't put them together, so he'd take Shuaishuai and Lingling out for fun.
As Grandma Mingming was quite old, it was better to let her stay calmly in the exhibit area, no need to trouble her.
