Chapter 51: Reality is Far Crueler than Movies
Just as Iron Man was about to meet his end, a figure sitting quietly in a corner of the audience sighed deeply.
"One after another, it's always up to me to save the day. These so-called superheroes should just be called 'super couriers' with how efficiently they deliver themselves to danger."
Su Ye had known there would be a major showdown tonight and naturally came to watch the drama unfold. What he didn't expect was for Iron Man to falter within half a minute of his entrance.
As he muttered to himself, a strand of web shot out, sticking to War Machine's shoulder cannon.
"I've had enough of you! Why does yours get to sit on your shoulder, while mine's stuck around my waist?"
The web tightened instantly, yanking War Machine off balance. The shoulder-mounted micro-missiles veered off course, hitting an Iron Soldier nearby before bouncing to the ground and exploding in a burst of sparks.
By now, no one cared whether the sparks were from faulty equipment. The few brave spectators who hadn't fled watched in awe as the several-hundred-kilogram War Machine was swung like a meteor hammer.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The swinging War Machine mowed down the neatly lined-up Iron Soldiers like a row of tumbling gourds.
Taking advantage of the fallen Iron Soldiers' inability to aim, Su Ye leaped into the air, using his webs to swing onto the shattered glass roof of the exhibition hall.
The exhibition hall was the same one used for the Stark Expo's opening ceremony, with a circular opening in the center of the roof for Iron Man to enter and exit freely.
The electric net that had intercepted Iron Man was installed over that circular opening, and much of the surrounding glass roof had already been shattered by stray bullets.
By the time Su Ye landed on the roof, the Iron Soldiers below were struggling to get back up, while the powerless Iron Man had fallen onto the stage, landing amidst a cluster of Iron Soldiers.
A fall from several dozen meters wasn't much for Iron Man. Back when he hand-built the Mark I in a cave, he had survived a similar drop into the desert without a scratch.
The man had a knack for surviving, so a little fall didn't matter.
Even so, Su Ye used his webs to pull Iron Man out of the pile of soldiers and onto the roof.
Knock, knock!
Su Ye tapped on Iron Man's awkwardly designed helmet. "Hey, Mr. Tony Stank, you okay?"
Once outside the venue's signal-blocked zone, Jarvis's signal finally came through, and Iron Man's suit began rebooting. Despite being dazed from the fall but still alive, Tony Stark didn't offer thanks. Instead, he chose to quip first.
"It's Stark, not Stank. What, is Spider-Man illiterate? Can't even pronounce a name properly?"
This was their first meeting, but the circumstances and atmosphere were far from cordial.
"Heh," Su Ye shrugged. "I've got a speech disorder, so my pronunciation's off. If that bothers you, well, you'll just have to deal with it."
While the two exchanged words, the Iron Man suit completed its reboot. Although the back still looked battered and rough, it didn't hinder its functionality.
Meanwhile, on the ground, the Iron Soldiers were getting back on their feet, and both War Machine and the airborne Iron Soldiers were preparing for liftoff.
"Times tight. I think we'll have to continue this chat later," Tony said.
As Tony spoke, he took off, hovering mid-air and regaining the commanding presence he had displayed during the Expo's opening ceremony—though the battered back of his suit still looked like it needed a serious fix.
"What happens next is out of your league. Find a place to hide, and get home while you can!"
With that, Iron Man accelerated and flew off into the distance.
War Machine and the airborne Iron Soldiers roared out of the roof opening one after another, ignoring Su Ye crouching on the side as they pursued Iron Man.
However, the ground-based Iron Soldiers from the army and navy raised their weapons, aiming at Su Ye on the roof.
Clearly, chasing Iron Man was their primary objective, but they wouldn't miss the chance to eliminate Spider-Man, the uninvited guest who had spoiled their plans.
Rat-a-tat-tat!
When the bullets started flying, Su Ye was already gone from the rooftop. He wasn't dumb enough to stay in place knowing he was about to be attacked.
Outside the venue, the entire Expo grounds were in complete chaos.
Iron Man, now outside the venue, was being relentlessly pursued by War Machine and the airborne Iron Soldiers. He had to rely on aerial maneuvers to dodge their attacks, with little regard for the damage stray bullets might cause to buildings or civilians.
In the movies, this scene was depicted rather theatrically.
The airborne Iron Soldiers would shoot at Iron Man, shattering observation decks and glass structures along the way, yet miraculously, the tourists inside remained unharmed.
Even when an Iron Soldier was accidentally shot down by friendly fire, crashing and tumbling through fleeing crowds for dozens of meters, the nearby pedestrians still somehow walked away unscathed.
Meanwhile, Tony Stark, despite being cornered by attacks from both land and air and fleeing like a hunted animal, still managed to heroically swoop down and save a child wearing an Iron Man helmet.
From the moment he landed, aimed at an approaching Iron Soldier, and then took off again, the entire sequence took roughly five seconds.
Unless those pursuing Iron Soldiers were somehow paralyzed mid-air, with their weapons inexplicably jammed, those five seconds would have been more than enough for them to unleash multiple volleys.
That's why movies are just movies.
In reality, when the glass windows inside the exhibition hall shattered, countless spectators were injured, with a few so severely hurt they were ready to be sent straight to the morgue.
As Iron Man burst out of the venue, engaging in a chase with the Iron Soldiers, a rain of bullets showered the crowd, injuring numerous bystanders.
Some who were struck by falling Iron Soldiers didn't even get the chance to reach the hospital—they were killed instantly.
As for the boy in the movie, who Iron Man had heroically saved, he was indeed outside the venue. Facing the oncoming Iron Soldiers, he bravely raised his glowing hand.
Among the fleeing crowd, his defiant figure stood out prominently.
However, Iron Man, who was being relentlessly chased, had no time to intervene. His suit had sustained damage during the pursuit, and maintaining mobility to avoid getting hit was already a stroke of luck.
The Iron Soldiers had a simple directive: target Iron Man. The boy's helmet was mistakenly identified as Iron Man, prompting the soldier's weapon to lock onto the boy's face, ready to unleash a volley.
If that volley had been fired, the world might never have seen Spider-Man again—because, as it turns out, this boy was supposedly the future Spider-Man, Tom Holland.
For Su Ye, could this actually be a good thing?
Without another Spider-Man, he would remain the sole Spider-Man in this world.
Whoosh!
Just as the Iron Soldier was about to fire, a dark shadow flashed by, and a black Batarang lodged itself into the soldier's chest reactor.
After a burst of crackling noises, the Iron Soldier powered down.
"Kid, Iron Man can't save you. Go home!"
The boy, supposedly Tom Holland in his Iron Man helmet, turned around, only to catch a glimpse of a tall figure in a black cape soaring into the sky.
