Chapter 1: The awakening
Jack was an ordinary boy—or so he thought. At least, that's what the world had always told him. For years, he had lived in the quiet town of Dunswell, where the only things that set people apart were the mysterious abilities that everyone seemed to possess. Born with the rare but dismal F-rank, Jack had always felt like he was watching life unfold from a distance. His ability was nothing more than a faint aura that barely registered on anyone's radar. But even so, he had learned to get by. He wasn't weak; he was just... average.
Abilities were everything in the world Jack lived in. They were a mark of one's potential, a way to rise above the common masses and enter the ranks of the exceptional. Most people, if lucky, were born with an A or B rank. There were rumors of people who managed to reach the S or even S+ ranks, but those were the stuff of legends, reserved for warriors and great leaders. F-rank, though? That was a curse. It was the kind of ability that didn't even grant you the strength to move a rock, let alone make any lasting impact.
But despite this, Jack had never complained. He never asked for pity. His parents loved him, his friends treated him with kindness, and he managed to scrape by in life with the help of his wit and perseverance.
He had learned early on that power wasn't everything. Some of the most remarkable people he knew didn't rely on strength to make their mark. There was his best friend, Emma, who was born with an A-rank ability that allowed her to control wind. Then there was his neighbor, an elderly man named Mr. Grayson, who could heal any wound with a touch, a rare and powerful ability that had earned him the respect of the entire town. Jack knew people like Emma and Mr. Grayson were exceptions. Most abilities had limited uses, and Jack had always accepted that his would never be anything special.
That was until the day it all changed.
It had been a typical afternoon when the shift happened. Jack had just finished his schoolwork in his room, staring at the ceiling, contemplating his life, when something strange started to happen. He had never been one for training his ability, not when it barely did anything. It was more of an afterthought for him, something that he rarely used outside of the occasional, half-hearted attempt to shift a small object. But that day was different.
As Jack sat on his bed, he felt an odd sensation in his chest—something pulling at him, stretching him, as though a dormant force within him had begun to stir. He looked down at his hands, and for the first time in his life, he felt an electric tingle running through his fingertips. A surge of power, raw and uncontrollable, throbbed through his veins.
He stood up, his legs shaking slightly as he tried to steady himself. The sensation was growing stronger, intensifying with each passing second. Then, a pulse of energy erupted from his body, a wave of force that knocked everything off his desk and sent a shudder through the entire room.
"Wh-What was that?" Jack breathed, his heart pounding in his chest.
It was then that he felt something—something that made his blood run cold. He could hear voices, whispers, faint but undeniable, like an ancient, distant presence had awakened within him. A deep, resonant voice called to him in his mind, and for a moment, it felt as though the universe itself had paused, holding its breath.
"You are not what you seem, Jack."
The voice wasn't just in his head; it was in the very air around him. He could feel its weight, as if the words had substance. The sensation was overwhelming, and Jack stumbled back, clutching his head as the whispers began to multiply, spiraling into a chorus of hundreds of voices.
"Who... who are you?" he gasped, his voice cracking.
"I am the one who has been waiting for you to awaken." The voice answered, calm and soothing yet laced with an undeniable power. "The one who has been sleeping within you all this time. You are no mere F-rank. You are destined for something far greater."
Jack's mind reeled. He had always known he was different, but this? This was something beyond his understanding.
Before he could process what was happening, another surge of energy flooded through him, and the world around him seemed to bend and distort. His body tingled as if he were made of raw energy itself, and the room seemed to hum with an ancient, powerful force.
And then it stopped.
Jack fell to his knees, exhausted and confused. The whispering voices faded away, leaving him with nothing but silence, but the sensation of power remained. His breathing was ragged as he tried to regain his bearings, but his body felt... different. Stronger. More alive.
The air in the room felt charged, heavy with a presence he couldn't quite comprehend. He placed a hand on his chest, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart. He could feel it—the rhythm of something ancient, something divine that had now awakened inside him.
"What... what just happened?" Jack whispered to himself.
He stood, shakily, moving to the mirror in his room. He looked at his reflection, expecting to see the same boy who had always stared back at him: a lanky teenager with messy brown hair, dull brown eyes, and an expression of quiet resignation. But what he saw was different. His eyes were glowing—an ethereal, golden light that seemed to burn with an intensity he had never seen before. His skin shimmered with an otherworldly radiance, and his muscles, though still lean, were now taut with energy, as though every cell in his body had been infused with power.
Jack touched his face, his hands trembling. The change was real. He was no longer the boy with an F-rank ability. He could feel it deep inside, a connection to something far greater than himself.
And that's when it hit him: he had evolved.
Somehow, in that one instant, his F-rank ability had transformed. It wasn't just a random burst of power—this was something purposeful. Something divine. He had gone from being nothing more than a weakling to... something else. Something far beyond human comprehension.
A godly power.
Jack backed away from the mirror, his mind racing. How was this possible? How had his ability evolved in the blink of an eye? It wasn't supposed to happen. Abilities didn't just change like that. It was unheard of.
But the answer was clear. It had happened to him. He had been chosen, marked, or perhaps awakened to something that had been dormant within him all along.
And now, Jack had no idea what came next.
One thing was certain: his life, and the world he thought he knew, would never be the same again.
