Chapter 239: The more you highlight your strength, the weaker you appear (please subscribe)

A week had flown by, and just as Yiyeta Harbor was developing at a rapid pace, in a hidden underground chamber in the capital of Hadalata, William was swaying a crimson goblet in his hand, listening to his subordinate's report.

"My lord, the fleet you had sent to explore the Mist Sea has returned. According to their description, the fog there seems to have undergone some new changes, the visibility is much higher than before, and the sea's wind and waves also do not seem as strong as they once were…" A tall and thin man was kneeling on the ground, respectfully conveying the intelligence he had gathered to William.

For these sailors who often roamed the seas, the terror of the Mist Sea was more than clear—during the thickest periods of fog, visibility could be less than a meter!

That meant on the same ship, sailors could only see themselves surrounded by a bizarre white fog; they couldn't see the vessel beneath their feet, much less their companions beside them. The only thing they could feel was themselves swaying and drifting along with the ship, heading deeper into the fog!

Anyone would involuntarily get the illusion that they were heading straight to hell.

But this time was different. The three fleets that set out to investigate the Mist Sea had all braced themselves for sacrifice, yet they all returned alive, bringing back a shocking message—the fog of the Mist Sea seemed to be slowly dissipating; now, the visibility within the fog had already exceeded six meters.

As William listened to the report of his subordinate, his eyes narrowed, and the movement of the goblet in his hand paused momentarily.

"My lord, could it be that something has gone wrong in the Wizard Land?" The tall and thin man asked tentatively.

"Very likely…" Thoughts raced through William's mind.

During this time, the shipbuilders who had previously stayed in Yiyeta had all been sent back in succession, and the content they reported was mostly about how rapidly Yiyeta Harbor was developing, with such high praise that it even made him suspect whether these people had been affected by some peculiar visual witchcraft, or if they were lying to deceive him!

"Sometimes, the more one tries to display their power, the weaker they are…" A mocking smile appeared at the corner of William's mouth.

From the descriptions of those shipbuilders, he also unearthed an important piece of news—that not so long ago, Wizard City Greenrile had undergone a revolt, and it was in this turmoil that Lynn had made significant contributions, allowing him to become the person in charge of Yiyeta Harbor.

The current situation in the Mist Sea was very possibly related to that rebellion.

The reports from those fleets undoubtedly corroborated this point. The switch from maritime trade to using sky-airships was precisely to conceal this!

"Lord William, what should we do now?" Kodi couldn't help but ask.

William's gaze flickered, hesitating to respond for a long while.

This message was undoubtedly very important, and probably couldn't be concealed for much longer.

The range of the Mist Sea was so vast, with constantly harsh and changing conditions at sea. Almost every year, fleets would stray into it, and only if they were lucky enough not to venture too deep, and didn't encounter storms or the Eyes of Death, would there be a slight chance to emerge alive.

This year, however, was different—since their fleets had returned safely, it meant others were likely no exception.

It would only take one opportunity for the people's fear of the Mist Sea to be completely shattered.

What was to happen next, he could guess with his feet—The Church would certainly not let go of an opportunity to completely eradicate these wizards!

William's face changed again and again. He was not willing to give up the huge profits that came from trade every year, but he also knew that once the war broke out, the Wizard Land would most likely be destroyed.

After all, if these wizards had the ability to counter the Church, why would they need to hide on a small island outside the Mist Sea?

The trusted subordinates gathered in the basement were also whispering to each other.

In the Sekas Empire, everyone knew the terror of the Church. Their past work for Helram was based on conditions that were sufficiently covert and safe.

Now, with significant changes happening in Wizard Land, and even the crucial barrier of the Mist Sea threatening to disappear, they couldn't help but entertain strange thoughts. Some even suggested whether they should report this news to His Eminence Cardinal Losak.

If they could follow the trail and even lead the Church's fleet through the Mist Sea to find that island, they could accomplish a great feat, offset their past 'faults,' and even receive an enfeoffment, becoming a powerful Duke.

This temptation faintly shook the balance in William's heart. On one side was the enormous profit of thousands of Gold Coins from the Empire every week, which could collapse at any moment.

On the other side was the Church's enfeoffment, an opportunity to become a noble of the Empire without hiding anymore, a chance to jump to the top in one leap!

William kept swaying the wine glass in his hand, the crimson liquid inside as turbulent as his mood. "Kodi, do you know how many wizards that Lord Lynn has transported to the royal city using airships recently, and what exactly are they all doing?"

"The matter of transporting goods is now entirely handled by a man named Laud. Lord Lynn doesn't allow us to interfere. Even the attendants left in the manor have been restricted under various pretexts, so up to now, their numbers and the composition of their personnel are still unknown. I only know that the shipments approximately happen every three to five days," Kodi said hesitantly.

"Also, they have already taken over part of the trade in glass and now seem to be making contacts with some nobles."

William snorted coldly. It seemed that the new controller of Yiyeta Harbor had no plans of trusting him. The wine glass in his hand stopped swaying, and then, with a fierce gesture, William drained the crimson liquid in one gulp and said coldly,

"Send more men to monitor their movements in the royal city from today, find out what these wizards are up to! Also, I need to know every single thing they are doing in the manor. Use the pretext of the previously negotiated profit sharing to send someone in to check!"

"I understand!" Kodi responded with a bow. Continue reading on My Virtual Library Empire

"Lord William, do we need to arrange a meeting with His Eminence the Cardinal first?" asked a weaselly-looking shipworker suddenly.

"No, now is not the time!" William shook his head. He didn't have enough chips in his hand.

The Compass capable of locating Wizard Land had been taken back by Lynn, meaning they had lost the ability to find that island in the open sea.

If there weren't adequate accomplishments to offset previous 'mistakes,' then once they were deemed without value, the inevitable outcome was clear!

Therefore, they must now obtain more intelligence. At the very least, they needed to confirm when the airship would stay in the manor, as it would definitely have a means to locate Wizard Land.

If they could cut ties with these wizards during this time, that would be more than ideal!
