chapter 330: a snowy drill
"Just what kind of turn of events is happening?" Professor Adolfo suddenly questioned, not expecting an avalanche to happen.
"Did student Apollo cause all this?" He added he was about to help but then another shout attracted his attention.
"What's with the avalanches!" It was Samael, then Keith, all looking worn from dodging monsters, but now they need to outrun a moving disaster.
"Oh, by the end of this drill, I think some people might hate Apollo," he chuckled a bit as he observed more.
Chunks of ice collided mid-air, trees snapped like twigs, and a cold gust of air surged ahead of the rolling doom.
The resistance harden as they descend forward was making it hard to see as the cold air continue slapping into thier faces, it freezs thier every breath while taking a toll on their limps.
It was less a descent and more a white stampede, a blur of fury and frost with matching howling beast in tow, it carve a path of mild destruction and epic student trauma all the way to the foot of the mountain. Truly thier professor Adolfo had his ways on making thier practice drill more exciting.
"The snow is strangely cold today"
"Hey Ali stop saying that and please what are you doing!" Arabela shouted in exasperation but then it change to shock when she witness Alicia getting completely swallowed by the avalanche.
"Hey do something with yourself why are you letting yourself be eaten by a pile of snow!" She shouted again.
"Arabela stop wasting your own energy with shouting just keep running" Samael warn her about while dodging the fangs of incoming low ranking beast. Their race to the end of the mountain became a race not to get caught on the avalanche and the horde of beasts set by their professor.
The marathon continued while the sound of the falling layer of snow. From a distance, it looked like the mountain was shedding its winter coat in one gentle swoop, but contrary to what its seem from far away. The sound of the rumbling snow were like drums that urge the children to rush forward. And leading them was Matilda and McKenzie, both were unaware about the dilemma that is about to fall on them.
"I wonder where Apollo is typically he should be the one to the lead this kind of drill"
"Now that you said it, I suddenly felt something wrong is going to happen"
"Come on don't say that Matilda your making me nervous"
They happily race together not until the ground began to tremble, the wind howled like a beast and a sudden pressure came crashing at the two.
"That doesn't sound good" Matilda whispers trying to dodge some builders that mysteriesly appears.
The atmosphere of the mountain suddenly shifted and from a far the two kids saw a white storm and leading its charge was thier friend Apollo.
"Hi guys!" He greeted and strangely he looked very happy about what he is doing.
"What the hell is this Apollo"
"An avalanche Mckenzie" he replied with his usual matter a fact tone but both his friends were very alarmed about the situation.
"We know that!" They explaimed controlling their breath as they increase thier speed.
"Sorry things just end like this" Apollo just shrug then stir his board to dodge the beasts that keeps lunging forward. Soon however the advance of the avalanche grew faster even Apollo did not expect that.
"That damn professor could this be his doing?" He thought as he try to increase his speed.
But then the wind current changes and the thunderous rumble of snow the avalanche came crashing into thier bodies, drowning out the students panicked cries. Thier bodies hugged by the coldness of the mountain while the wind howled even more like maniac.
Somewhere near the foot of the mountain...
The avalanche had finally settled from the white cold sheets of snow. Half of the class was either buried deep or panting on thier knees for nearly escaping. The air which filled with the rumblings of the storm was now replace by groans of physical pain. From the cries of pain a distinct set of colorful curses—most of which had a single name in common.
"APOLLO!"
They all said in unison.
Then the pile of snow shifted.
Then it coughed.
Then a human head popped out, spitting ice like a broken faucet.
"Ugh! Did I die?" McKenzie wheezed. "I saw a light. It looked like Apollo's flaming hair." he said and dramatically raise his hand as if reaching for the light.
"No, that was just the sun reflecting off his stupidly smug face," Braiden growled, crawling out of a snowbank with twigs sticking out of his eyebrows.
Behind them, a giant snowball rolled to a stop and cracked open like an egg. Out popped Aaron upside-down, eyes spinning. "Whose bright idea was it to snowboard on a wooden plank—OH RIGHT. THE APOCALYPSE IN A PERSON!"
"You know," Vesta said, pulling a half-frozen pinecone out of her training suits, "I always thought I'd die in a in battle. Not snowboard-rammed into a demon bear by my own teammate."
"That bear had it coming," Apollo said proudly, riding the last wave of snow like a surfer and doing a full 360 before dismounting. "Also, i save you from that demon."
"YOU CAUSED AN AVALANCHE!" shouted Samael, using his a wooden stick to dig himself out. "We were supposed to descend slowly like normal human beings!"
"I did descend slowly. Everyone else just wasn't on my level," Apollo said with a mock shrug.
"You were riding an upside-down bench while dodging fire and ice breathing beast" screamed Agnes, hair covered in icicles.
"Would've been cooler if I had theme music," Apollo teased them more liking how tense up they are.
[I believe they are pissed not tense
"Theme music?" muttered Matilda, still brushing snow off her training boots. "You caused 15 students to scream in seven different languages!"
"Make it 14 only Alicia enjoy the snow, right Ali?" Apollo argue.
"Wait where is she anyway?" Blair finally asked noticing her absence.
"Hey I found her!" Alya shouted in triumphant as she pulled Alicia away from the snow.
Meanwhile, Professor Adolfo, casually sipping hot tea from a flask (where did he even get it?), was watching from a nearby cliff with the energy of a proud zookeeper. "Now that's what I call active learning."
"I bonded with a rock. With my face," Blair deadpanned, voice muffled by her scarf.
Just then, a muffled shriek came from a snowdrift. A frozen hand popped out like a horror movie and weakly waved.
"…I found Niko," Alicia said, floating him out with one hand like a chilled fish stick.
"I was buried alive…" Niko mumbled. "Tell my books I love them…"
"Wait you read books I thought you only swords" Agnes playfully joked dusting the ice on him.
McKenzie who was able to evade the avalanche, brush the snow off his training suit, looked far too proud for someone who'd just barely escape danger.
"Honestly," he said, "Dont you miss, classes like this?"
"NO KIDDING!" the entire class yelled in unison, half throwing snowballs and the rest throwing shade.
Even Jillian was holding up a hand-painted sign that read:
> 🚫 "APOLLO IS BANNED FROM BOARD SPORTS FOREVER" 🚫
"You guys are just jealous of my terrain mastery," Apollo said wanting to play more, then he strike a ridiculous snow-boarding pose.
Behind him, Alicia wordlessly created a snow golem shaped like Apollo and promptly dropkicked it into a tree.
Apollo blinked.
"…Okay fair."
Professor Adolfo, now leaning on a tree, laughed heartily. "Well! Class dismissed! You've survived nature, monsters, your classmate's creative insanity, and at least one emotional breakdown. Excellent work!..."
"You forgot frostbite," muttered Aaron.
"And betrayal," added Keith dramatically.
"Also—my left shoe is missing!" cried McKenzie, waving one boot.
As the students limped, rolled, or were magically dragged back to the Academy shuttle point, Apollo stood triumphantly with his wooden plank-turned-snowboard in hand.
"Apollo," Alicia said coolly, walking past him, "if you do this again…"
He smiled. "You'll reward me with warm soup and more sarcasm?"
She leaned in close, eyes gleaming. "No. I'll freeze your bed and replace your shampoo with goat milk."
"…Noted."
But then professor Adolfo continue what he was saying.
"...is what you all expecting since your winter break is coming all of you should take drills more serious, now off you go lets start again"
Then with a flick of his finger the students found themselves at the top of the mountain again.
"Alright same rules" he added before completely disappearing. The class was left again in the snow silence was reigning as no one was daring to speak.
"Seriosly I wish that professor could have at least let us rest"
McKenzie complain but before they could even catch a break the sound of the roaring beast began to echo.
"Alright same rules he says" Apollo said already stretching to make another run.
"Same rules but no more skateboarding"
"Sure Alicia" he said with a smile as he run so fast he left a white trail.
"Alright folks no more avalanche okay!"
Once again the entire lower class made their way down the mountain.
