Chapter 212: Crimson Eyes, the Glory of Peak Whitebeard!
As Chen Ye departed, Whitebeard didn't make any attempt to stop him. At his age, Whitebeard no longer had a heart for needless brawls or the itch to test himself against every strong opponent. To him, the most pressing matter was rescuing his "beloved son," Ace. He only had half an hour to act and had to make the most of it.
"This feeling…"
Whitebeard clenched his fist, sensing the boundless vitality coursing through his body. He couldn't help but sigh, "It's truly nostalgic!"
"Dad, aren't you going to stop that guy?"
Marco landed beside Whitebeard, still glaring at the distant figure of Chen Ye, clearly unsettled. That guy had slapped him so hard his head was still buzzing—it was completely unfair and downright dishonorable!
Whitebeard replied, "Don't forget our mission, Marco. As long as we save Ace, we win!"
Marco knew Whitebeard was right. "Understood, Dad."
At that moment, Marco finally noticed the terrifying aura emanating from Whitebeard. He was about to ask about it when Whitebeard suddenly issued a loud command:
"Men, retreat immediately!"
The pirates froze, bewildered by the order.
Marco was equally confused. "Dad, why are we retreating? Aren't we going to save Ace?"
"Ace and I will handle that," Whitebeard said with a smile, adding, "Marco, are you afraid?"
"Not at all!"
Marco shook his head firmly. He was never one to fear death.
"But with just the two of us…"
"No! We have a powerful ally—Ace's brother."
Whitebeard cut him off, laughing heartily. "Who would have thought that little brat is the legendary warrior, gura la la la…"
As he continued laughing, Whitebeard's eyes gleamed with recognition. As a man who once stood as an equal to the Pirate King, Whitebeard was well-informed and had, of course, heard of the legendary warrior from 800 years ago—the Liberator of legend!
"The legendary warrior?"
Marco was confused. He had never heard of such a figure.
Whitebeard didn't bother explaining, as time was of the essence. When he saw his men still frozen in place, his expression darkened. "Are you disobeying my orders?"
The crew hastily replied, "No, sir!"
"Retreat immediately!" Whitebeard repeated firmly. "I will save Ace!"
"Marco, come with me!"
With those words, Whitebeard pushed off the deck of the Moby Dick. His massive frame leaped into the air, soaring directly toward the plaza of Marineford.
The sight left many pirates stunned. Even the division commanders were taken aback. They knew Whitebeard's condition better than anyone else. Such agile movement was something only the Whitebeard of his prime could have achieved.
"What's going on?"
Diamond Jozu couldn't help but ask, "Why does it feel like Dad has returned to how he was twenty years ago?"
Blamenco, the Sixth Division Commander, added, "I think so too. Dad seems to have regained his youth, and even his ailments seem to be gone."
Flower Sword Vista raised his voice, "Marco, what happened to Dad?"
Marco simply laughed and said, "Just listen to him. Retreat now! If Dad comes back and finds you all still here, he'll be furious."
With that, Marco transformed into his phoenix form, surrounded by blue flames, and took off after Whitebeard.
No one noticed the solemnity in Marco's eyes. He had only been putting on a brave face earlier.
As both the First Division Commander and the ship's doctor, Marco knew Whitebeard's condition better than anyone else. This newfound vitality wasn't normal—and Marco couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss.
Additionally, Marco understood all too well that for an aged, ailing man to regain such vitality, it could only mean burning through the very last reserves of his life force. The drastic transformation Whitebeard was undergoing could only be the result of that woman's interference!
A chilling realization dawned on Marco: his father likely had no intention of leaving Marineford alive. As this thought struck him, Marco gazed at Whitebeard's towering figure ahead, and tears streamed down his face.
"I hope… this is just my imagination!"
He murmured softly to himself before gritting his teeth and rushing to catch up with Whitebeard.
Marineford, near the high platform.
"Boom… Boom… Boom-boom…"
The closer they got, the louder the war drum sound became.
"What's going on? What is that sound?"
"That strange sound… it seems to be coming from everywhere!"
"Why do I feel… excited hearing it?"
"Me too…"
Countless Marine soldiers were abuzz with confusion and curiosity. Even some of the most powerful figures were left baffled by the rhythmic drumbeats.
The legendary warrior from 800 years ago was a figure shrouded in secrecy, with very few people knowing of their existence. The World Government had deliberately erased all traces of that warrior, concealing their deeds and legacy.
Amidst his battle with Mihawk, Zoro suddenly smirked. "Our captain is finally about to show his true strength!"
Across from him, Mihawk immediately asked, "You seem to know something. Your captain? Is this magical drumbeat the doing of Straw Hat Luffy?"
Zoro grinned menacingly. "Master, you'd better not underestimate our captain!"
"He's right!"
A voice came from above. A curly-haired youth was seen stepping through the air using Geppo, rapidly approaching the high platform—it was Sanji.
Mihawk, seeing this, suddenly sheathed his sword. The battle was over.
He had recognized the curly-haired man in mid-air—it was someone he had dismissed as a minor figure the last time they met.
"What's the matter? Done already?" Zoro asked, biting down on his blade.
"It seems there's something miraculous happening with your group that I cannot yet comprehend," Mihawk said seriously as he secured his sword on his back. "I want to see how far you all can go."
Zoro was momentarily stunned.
From above, Sanji called out loudly, "Mosshead! What are you dawdling for? If he doesn't want to fight, hurry up and help Luffy!"
For once, Zoro didn't argue with Sanji. He turned to Mihawk and said, "I hope the next time we meet, we can settle this once and for all."
Mihawk replied without hesitation, "I look forward to it, great swordsman!"
The title was an unmistakable acknowledgment of Zoro's strength.
Without further delay, Zoro sprinted toward the high platform.
At the same time, Chen Ye and Qin Muyin had also arrived back at the scene.
What they saw was Vice Admiral Green Bull, transformed into a massive tree-like creature. His hands had turned into countless branches, weaving together into an enormous cocoon.
Beside him was Vice Admiral Fujitora, assisting with his powers.
The drumbeats were emanating from within the cocoon. Chen Ye immediately understood the situation.
Though Fujitora and Green Bull held the rank of vice admiral, they both possessed combat strength on par with admirals. The two of them working together was enough to force Luffy to unleash his ultimate form.
