I Can Hear the Heart's Voice of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Chapter 70: The More You Understand, the Greater Your Doubts

At this point, Chen Yunyun couldn't help but let out a long sigh.

Even though she knew those who looked at her didn't do it intentionally, she often reminded herself not to care about others' gazes.

But as a woman in her thirties, how could she possibly not care about these things?

Moreover, Chen Yunyun was not unattractive; her skin was a bit dark, but her appearance was fine. Apart from vitiligo, her skin was actually quite healthy. Although she wasn't particularly beautiful, she definitely wasn't ugly, the kind of woman who grows on you.

But now, with these white spots on her face, it's understandable how much it troubles her.

Lu Xuan could understand; in such situations, it's hard for anyone, woman or man, to remain indifferent.

No one doesn't love beauty.

As Chen Yunyun said, the ones on the arms can be covered with clothing, but how can you cover them on the face?

Seeing Lu Xuan remain silent, Chen Yunyun asked, "Dr. Lu, can my condition be cured with Chinese medicine?"

Lu Xuan pondered for a moment, "Let me take a look first."

The pathogenesis and etiology of vitiligo are not yet clear, but modern medicine generally believes that it occurs in genetically susceptible individuals who manifest disruptions in immune function, neurological, mental and endocrine, and metabolic functions due to various internal and external factors, leading to enzyme system inhibition or destruction of melanocytes or obstacles in melanin production or darkening process, finally resulting in pigment loss.

Mental and neurochemical factors may play a significant role in the onset of the disease. Clinical observation has found that mental factors and trauma are the main triggers for vitiligo, and summer is the disease's high-incidence season.

Chen Yunyun's vitiligo also worsened during this period, with many new spots appearing.

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), vitiligo is referred to as "white patches," "white speckles," or "white patch wind."

In the "Treatise on the Origin and Manifestation of Various Diseases," there is a record: "Vitiligo, with the face and neck and body color turning white, different from the skin color, also not itchy or painful, called vitiligo." The "Medical Canon of Gold Mirror: Essential Prescription Heart Method for External Medicine" also records: "White patch wind occurs on face and neck, wind evil converges into white spots and patches, severely spreads over the body without pain or itch, suitable for treating with wind removing and applying grease for recovery." The Song Dynasty's "General Record of Shengji" also states: "…in mild cases, only white spots are present, in severe cases, after several months, the whole body becomes mottled white…hair also changes, does not differ throughout the year."

Chinese medicine believes emotional injury can cause liver Qi stagnation, impaired Qi mechanism, further worsens with Wind Evil attacking the skin, leading to Qi and blood disharmony, blood failing to nourish the skin, over time liver Qi rebels against the spleen, resulting in liver-spleen disharmony, dampness obstructing the channels; liver and kidney share the same origin, liver deficiency leads to kidney weakness, the defensive and nourished Qi lack connectivity, the skin loses nourishment leading to disease.

Lu Xuan doesn't know much about skin diseases, that's about all he can remember.

Luckily, there's guidance for certain things, otherwise, if he encountered such situations, Lu Xuan would also have a headache.

After listening for a while, Lu Xuan had an epiphany.

In TCM theory, vitiligo manifestations are divided into six types: disharmony of Qi and blood, damp-heat internal presence, liver stagnation of Qi, liver-kidney deficiency, spleen-kidney Yang deficiency, and stagnated channels, with different types having different symptoms.

For example, with Qi and blood disharmony, generally, the white spots are light-colored, blurry at the edges, progress slower, presenting with a pale and moist tongue, thin pulse, treated mainly by nourishing blood, dispersing wind, and harmonizing Qi and blood.

Chen Yunyun's condition belongs to segmental vitiligo, mostly appearing on the face and limbs, traditionally located within the heart and spleen in TCM.

Since the heart governs blood vessels and manifests in the face, spleen governs the four limbs, being the source of Qi and blood, the weakness in heart and spleen Qi and blood inevitably affects the channels and Qi and blood of the governing areas, consequently causing local skin color changes, forming skin white spots, being the main type of vitiligo lesions, hence treatment should focus on harmonizing and supplementing the heart and spleen.

Lu Xuan pondered for a while, then wrote a prescription in Chen Yunyun's medical record: Dried Astragalus Root 15g, He Shou Wu 30g, Ye Jiao Teng 10g, Bai Shao 20g, Ligustrum lucidum 10g, Danggui 10g, safflower 10g, Eclipta prostrata 15g, Black Sesame 20g, Fangfeng 10g.

He then handed it to Su Kenan to enter into the system.

After Chen Yunyun left with the payment slip, while Ji Xiuwen hadn't yet risen, Lu Xuan explained, "There are too many patients; I'll let you try yourselves depending on the situation. If I talk too much, you'll forget even more."

Ji Xiuwen was stunned for a moment, then stood up with a smile, "You don't need to explain so clearly, I understand."

If we explain meticulously for every patient and let them try, it might only be possible to see a dozen patients a day, and under certain complex conditions, maybe not even ten.

Lu Xuan naturally couldn't let them try each one.

Also, having one or two of people like Ji Xiuwen a day is already satisfying.

In a big hospital, being an assistant to other doctors, on average, one may not even get one a day.

Even if there were, it's impossible to go into as much detail as Lu Xuan does.

Lu Xuan smiled, "Actually, you can think about it these days, while systematically studying, focus on a particular disease category, just like Su Kenan, who is more interested in gynecological diseases."

Mentioning gynecological diseases, Su Kenan's fair face visibly turned red.

Ji Xiuwen didn't pay attention to this but thought for a moment and then nodded, "Alright, I'll think about it carefully in the next few days."

He actually wanted to learn all the subjects but also knows himself well. Given his talent, learning all diseases thoroughly would take too long, and because of learning too broadly, he might end up knowing a bit of everything but not being proficient in any.
