Chapter 123: Bullet Ballistics Test
"If that's the case, then we have to kill him in this war," Norton said. Gideon looked at him and shook his head.
"It's unlikely he'll join the war. What matters now is how we deal with this problem and defend the territory," Gideon explained.
"There will come a time for us to track down that person," Gideon continued.
Norton clenched his fist tightly, then nodded in agreement with what Gideon said. The man was still holding the bullet projectile as if he felt guilty that the technology of war from Gideon's world had ended up being used by the people of this era to fight wars.
That was what Gideon had always feared. Lucky! That person only handed over the M17. If they let Luthe analyze the M4A1, then everything would be destroyed.
There had been no 5.56mm projectiles used in this war, and it was highly likely they would not be used because they simply did not exist here.
There was a certain limit to the speed of a 9mm projectile compared to larger calibers.
Basically, small-caliber rounds like the 9mm could only travel up to 50 meters. That was when the bullet and pistol were manufactured with factory precision.
But it was a different case if the bullet and rifle were handmade; the effective range could be shorter and unstable.
"So what's your plan this time?" Norton asked.
"We need to anticipate their attack with an effective defense method."
"How?" Norton pressed.
"You gather the types of armor available on the market and collect them. I'll show you how it works."
Norton went silent, then nodded in agreement. With the help of palace soldiers, they gathered a total of five different kinds of armor made with varying quality of steel.
Gideon examined each carefully, then ordered the soldiers to put the armor onto wooden mannequins shaped like men.
"Oh, I understand," Norton said, realizing what Gideon was about to demonstrate.
He attached a suppressor to the muzzle of the M17 and flicked off the safety. That way there would be no sharp crack from the shots.
Gideon stepped back fifty meters away from the target and told everyone to stand behind him to prevent the bullet from ricocheting in the wrong direction.
He drew his pistol from its holster. Hannah froze. Every time she saw that pistol, the memory of Gideon punishing her for her recklessness flashed in her mind. But she considered that incident a valuable lesson for her life.
BANG!
Gideon pulled the trigger and let the round, the same caliber as the earlier projectile, fly fast and unstoppable toward one of the armors.
To everyone's shock, the armor was pierced and the bullet was buried in the wooden mannequin.
He fired again at another armor. The bullet went through it. He kept shooting until he reached the fifth armor.
The soldiers were stunned, jaws dropping, and so was Norton. None of them ever imagined that a weapon so small could potentially kill soldiers who lacked adequate armor.
BANG!
The final shot rang out, but the bullet stopped when it struck the fifth armor, failing to penetrate it. Norton was amazed.
The last armor was the one used by the royal troops, made from the strongest steel.
"But the bullets still go through the gaps in the armor. What should we do?" Norton asked.
"Replace your shields with box-shaped ones that cover your entire body. Place them in the front line," Gideon explained.
"That'll be heavy."
"Better than losing lives," Gideon replied.
Norton nodded. It was such a shame, he thought, that Crown Prince Lubert had driven Gideon out earlier.
If only he had accepted him, there might have been massive changes in the army.
"I'll propose it," Norton said.
Gideon nodded, locked the pistol's safety back on, and holstered it. The demonstration was over. Now it was up to Norton to work hard and convince Lubert to apply this plan.
"So what's the next plan now that we know this?" Norton asked. Gideon stayed silent for a moment.
"I hate to say this, but I don't have a choice. My team and I are going to infiltrate Luthe and destroy this technology," Gideon answered.
Hannah gasped, her eyes wide as she heard Gideon and his team planning to go to Luthe to stop their stolen technology.
It was reckless, yet also brilliant and daring. If he succeeded, they would return as heroes. If he failed, the kingdom would not even acknowledge their efforts.
"That's risky," Norton said.
"I have to do it, because our arrival here has clearly caused massive destruction to your world," Gideon replied.
Norton turned and saw that daylight was fading and night would soon come. He offered his home as a place for Gideon and his team to stay. Gideon nodded, not minding at all, and thanked him.
He said farewell to Hannah, stepped into their carriage, and rode out of the palace grounds following Earl Ashfield's carriage.
In the front courtyard, Hannah stood motionless, watching them leave.
"If I were you, I would become Gideon's close friend and listen to all of his intelligence," said a woman's voice.
Hannah turned around and saw her mother approaching. She wiped her tears and walked closer, hugging her mother tightly.
"Gideon and his team are terrifyingly capable. They could even conquer Moko," Hannah said.
"I've realized their power is frightening, but it would be very beneficial if we could work with them," Anastasya replied.
"Listen to me. Maybe this sounds crazy, but it's the only way to end the war against Luthe."
Elsewhere, Gideon and his team arrived at the grand, luxurious home of Earl Ashfield. Gideon wasn't surprised at the sight, since he often saw noble houses filled with expensive collections.
"Make yourself at home," Norton said, and Gideon nodded.
He turned and told Luke and Lena to rest. They would regroup after dinner. Both of them nodded obediently.
The servants began preparing a lavish dinner, filled with many dishes that stirred the appetite. Norton and Gideon's team enjoyed the meal, then gathered afterward to relax for a while.
"I'd trade all my wealth just to get that weapon," Norton joked, pointing at the M17 on Gideon's hip.
"Haha! This thing isn't for sale, not even for your life."
"You're stubborn, Gideon," Norton grumbled.
As they laughed at each other's jokes while enjoying their wine, their attention turned to the door opening.
A soldier entered and told Norton that Princess Hannah and Queen Anastasya had arrived.
"Her Majesty the Queen? Why would she come here?" Norton asked.
"Let them in," Norton ordered, and his soldier obeyed.
The four of them prepared to greet the queen and princess. The door opened again, and the two women entered, seeing Norton relaxing with Gideon.
"Drinking wine in wartime, the people will hate you, Ashfield," Anastasya teased.
"I couldn't resist my thirst, Your Majesty."
Queen Anastasya hadn't come to relax with them. She had come to offer Gideon a partnership. She knew Gideon's abilities were beyond her comprehension, power that could bring both peace and ruin.
Her plan was to use Gideon's strength to create peace and end the war.
"I came to offer you Princess Hannah, Gideon," Anastasya said.
"I'm sorry. If this is about a marriage proposal, I—"
"Not marriage."
"She will become your subordinate," Anastasya declared.
"WHAT?!"
