I Became the Mother of His Child

Chapter 265: What Competition is it?

It was noon, and Song Yuanhuan's lunchtime had arrived. After tidying up his desk, Song Yuanhuan was planning to head home for lunch when Fu Guanglei knocked on his office door first, "Yuanhuan, let's go! Let's have lunch together!" Fu Guanglei and Zheng Guohui were already gathered at the office door, clearly ready to invite Song Yuanhuan to join them in the cafeteria for a communal meal.

"Today I need to go home for lunch, you guys go ahead!" Song Yuanhuan cheerfully declined the invitation from Fu Guanglei and Zheng Guohui. Jokingly, why would he spend his lunchtime with two bachelors in the cafeteria when he could enjoy a meal at home with his wife and children!

"Ever since your wife came, you've ditched us to eat alone, Song Yuanhuan, that's too much!" Zheng Guohui joked loudly.

Song Yuanhuan raised his eyebrows and graciously accepted their teasing. His tall figure casually strode past them and then he left coolly, leaving Fu Guanglei and Zheng Guohui with a handsome view of his back.

Fu Guanglei and Zheng Guohui exchanged glances. As single men, they completely failed to understand Song Yuanhuan's eagerness to get home, but they didn't say much. Relatively speaking, they were quite envious of him.

"Are you back?" In the family house assigned by the military, Xu Xiuxiu had just carefully placed the sleeping boy and girl twins in bed. As she set the table with dishes she had prepared, Song Yuanhuan appeared at the doorstep.

"Yep." Song Yuanhuan took off his military cap.

"Go inside and call Chengguang to come out for lunch." Xu Xiuxiu glanced towards the bedroom. Just moments ago, as she put the twins to sleep, Song Chengguang had eagerly followed her around, and now he was inside, watching his siblings sleep with a silly grin.

"Mommy, sister furrowed her brow again, but I smoothed it out." Xu Xiuxiu had just transferred the twins from the stroller to the bed when Little Baby seemed to sense something and frowned unhappily. Xu Xiuxiu gently soothed the little girl and carefully smoothed out her brow, while Song Chengguang watched from the side. Then he suddenly became excited, staying in the room for a long time. Initially, Xu Xiuxiu didn't understand why until she heard Song Chengguang mentioning smoothing out the brow, then she knew what the little guy was thinking.

"Really? Chengguang is such a good brother. Hurry up and come out for lunch! Your dad is home!" Xu Xiuxiu's voice was soft but clear enough for Song Chengguang to hear.

"Okay!" Song Chengguang immediately got up from the bed and put on his little shoes before leaving the bedroom: "Daddy." Song Chengguang called out enthusiastically.

"Yep." Song Yuanhuan glanced at his elder son, picked him up, and placed him on a stool as tall as him: "Time to eat." After settling him, he too sat at the table, and the family of three joyfully started their lunch.

"By the way, Xiuxiu, there might be some military wife contests in the afternoon following the performance tomorrow," Song Yuanhuan remembered the schedule he had received that morning and looked at Xiuxiu's slim figure, not failing to remind her of her petite stature not really being a match for the other military wives.

"A contest?" Xu Xiuxiu was somewhat surprised.

"Yep." Song Yuanhuan served Song Chengguang a piece of sweet and sour pork rib: "A singing and dancing performance in the morning, tug-of-war at noon, arm wrestling contest, and there's also a three-legged race involving a military wife with a child. The three-legged race is optional, and at night there's a bonfire barbecue." The day was packed with activities, but with Xu Xiuxiu's physique, she really wasn't up to contests like tug-of-war or arm wrestling! Participating in the mother and child three-legged race could be fun though.

Song Yuanhuan pondered, but his eyebrows involuntarily furrowed tightly.

"Three-legged race? Tug-of-war and arm wrestling as well? Who organized these events! Can we choose to participate or not?" Xu Xiuxiu asked frustratedly, wasn't it agreed that we only needed to watch the performances? Does this mean she has to compete too?

Tug-of-war! Arm wrestling! Just the names of these events were enough to intimidate Xu Xiuxiu.

"No, all military wives must participate. The prize for winning the tug-of-war is a plastic cup, the arm wrestling prize is a bar of soap, and the three-legged race prize is a small bucket, awarded to the top thirty in each contest," Song Yuanhuan shook his head as he informed Xu Xiuxiu about the prizes.

Plastic cups, small buckets, and a bar of soap? These are the prizes for the competition? Geez, these prizes are really stingy and a bit ridiculous! Xu Xiuxiu instinctively felt repelled but then remembered that participation was mandatory. Even if she didn't care for these prizes, she had to participate. Thinking about it made Xu Xiuxiu feel like her chest was being crushed by a huge rock.

But as she looked up and saw Song Yuanhuan's serious expression, Xu Xiuxiu somehow felt more relaxed. "Mr. Song, are you worried I'll embarrass you?" she asked expectantly. She was sure she couldn't outdo the other military wives, and despite hanging around the construction site these days, her strength hadn't increased, so basically, she was bound to lose.

She didn't really care about winning or losing, but Lieutenant Colonel Song might be really disappointed.

"Afraid so," Song Yuanhuan looked at Xu Xiuxiu, silent for a moment, then honestly replied.

"You really don't have faith in me, huh! Humph." Xu Xiuxiu thought huffily, clearly dissatisfied with his straightforward admission, and turned to Song Chengguang beside her. "Chengguang, your dad is bullying your mom! What should we do?" Xu Xiuxiu planned to enlist Song Chengguang's support.

"Dad is bullying Mom?" Song Chengguang, munching on sweet and sour ribs, looked at Xu Xiuxiu with innocent eyes, not understanding when his dad had bullied his mom.

"Yeah, Chengguang, do you want to stand up for Mom?" Xu Xiuxiu continued her persuasion.

"Chengguang is a man and must protect Mom. If Dad bullies Mom, Chengguang will bully Dad for Mom," Song Chengguang said as he puffed out his little chest and fearlessly faced Song Yuanhuan.

"Thank you, Chengguang. You're truly Mommy's good son. Mommy loves you the most!" Xu Xiuxiu praised Song Chengguang cheerfully, then briefed him about the competition, "Chengguang will join Mommy in the competition as well, let's try hard to win first place, okay?"

"Competition? What competition?" Song Chengguang asked curiously, his little eyes instantly gleaming at the mention of the word competition.

"It's where you and mommy tie your left and right feet together, then race against other kids and their moms to see who runs the fastest. There's a prize for winning too!" The eternal trickster, Xu Xiuxiu easily spun her tale to convince Song Chengguang.

"Okay, okay! Chengguang will definitely win first place." Young boys often have a natural competitive spirit, and although Song Chengguang was young, he was no exception to this desire to win, immediately assuring her confidently after hearing Xu Xiuxiu's words.
