Chapter 197: Conversation at the Hospital
Song Yuanhuan saw that the person brought by the Police Station was someone familiar and knew that the matter could be handled much more easily. Originally, he might have had to rack his brains to come up with an excuse to sidestep Xiuxiu's incident today; but facing Shen Yangfei, perhaps he could afford to reveal some of the truth.
Though he was a military man, he wasn't a rigid and inflexible one. Confronted with his wife, who had gotten involved in the matter, and with his own obvious ability to prevent the crime but failing to demonstrate courageous justice, Song Yuanhuan naturally didn't lay out the whole truth to his old comrade, Shen Yangfei. Any smart person knew that it wasn't wise to tell the complete truth; the wisdom was in telling half-truths. Thus, in recounting the events' sequence, Song Yuanhuan skewed the general direction of blame toward his younger sister-in-law, making it as if, after being raped, Wenshu tried to rape the younger sister-in-law again, only to be thwarted by her pregnancy and her claim of self-defense due to the psychological trauma of the initial assault.
After getting the gist of the incident from Song Yuanhuan, Shen Yangfei immediately cursed in indignation. As a man of integrity, having served honorably in the army, he detested those who took advantage of defenseless young women the most.
"Such scum, to do such a thing, he deserves to be crippled!" Shen Feiyang said. Initially, he had felt some sympathy for Wenshu, seeing that his manhood had been ruined. But once he learned of his shameful actions, he did not have a shred of sympathy for Wenshu. People like him deserved their retribution.
"Xiao Zhao, Li Mu, you two help carry this guy to the hospital for treatment, we can't let him just die like this." Shen Yangfei immediately ordered his men to take Wenshu to the hospital. After all, if Wenshu survived, he'd surely not escape prison and losing a layer of skin. But if the man died, the situation would become much more troublesome, possibly even implicating his old comrade. Shen Yangfei knew very well how to prioritize.
"The suspect is sent to the hospital for treatment, and the case will be investigated further later. Song Yuanhuan, during the period before this case is closed, the police hope that as a key person in the case, you will be available to cooperate with our investigation at any time," Shen Yangfei said, handling the matter officially and by-the-book.
"No problem," Song Yuanhuan agreed with a nod, appearing relaxed.
However, although Wenshu was taken to the hospital for treatment, his fate was not too favorable. After all, the medical technology wasn't great back then, and since Xiuxiu had stabbed scissors into Wenshu's groin, he survived, but because his "manhood" wasn't reattached in time, he would never be able to function as a normal man.
Furthermore, with Song Yuanhuan maneuvering the situation and using Xu Jingjing as the victim claiming legitimate self-defense, not only could Wenshu not shake off the charge of rape, but he was also held in criminal detention for causing the miscarriage of Xu Jingjing's child and was sentenced to eight years in prison with a suspended sentence of three months.
Of course, all this came later.
Having dumped the mess on Song Yuanhuan, Xiuxiu hurriedly took Jingjing to the county hospital. Although they had arrived in time, Jingjing's child could not be saved. As for her injured body, the doctors said that as long as she paid attention to recuperation, her vitality could be restored in a year and a half.
As long as Jingjing herself was okay, Xiuxiu was already grateful to heaven. As for the child, if it couldn't be saved, then so be it!
Xu Jingjing emerged from the emergency room after over two hours, with Xu Xiuxiu sitting in the corridor until her legs were numb, too anxious to sit down. Her eyes were fixed unwaveringly on the operating room until she saw Xu Xiuxiu being wheeled out by a nurse, and only then did her hanging heart slightly settle.
In the ward, Xu Xiuxiu remained quiet as she stayed by Xu Jingjing's side.
Not long after Xu Jingjing was out of the operating room, Song Yuanhuan also rushed to the hospital. Seeing that Xu Jingjing was out of danger, he made a call to Xu Jingjing's parents at Xu Xiuxiu's suggestion.
Mr. and Mrs. Xu didn't quite understand over the phone, and upon learning that their youngest daughter was hospitalized, they hurriedly came without asking why. As Mrs. Xu pushed open the door of the ward and saw her pale, barely conscious fourth daughter lying on the hospital bed, she nearly fainted.
"Xiuxiu! What happened to Si Ya? How did going to the county to take wedding photos end with her in the hospital? Where is she injured?" Mrs. Xu's hands trembled as she grasped Xu Xiuxiu's, with tears of heartache spilling from her eyes marked by time.
"Jingjing had a miscarriage," Xu Xiuxiu replied with an unrestrained accusation in her expression. She coldly pulled her hand away from Mrs. Xu's.
"A miscarriage? How did Jingjing miscarry? No! Xiuxiu, are you saying our Jingjing... was pregnant?" Mrs. Xu shook her head in disbelief, and it seemed to take a moment for her to fully process Xu Xiuxiu's words. Then her vision darkened sharply, "How could this be? Was it Song Wenshu? Did he touch our Si Ya? How could this have happened! Your eldest sister said she was just letting Si Ya be seen by Song Wenshu, I thought Si Ya and Song Wenshu took a liking to each other..." Mrs. Xu spoke as if struck by a tremendous blow, her body swaying and stumbling backward several steps. Had it not been for Xu Xiuxiu, who reacted quickly to catch her, Mrs. Xu might already have fallen to the floor by now.
"Mom, Dad, did neither of you know that Jingjing was raped by that beast Song Wenshu?" Xu Xiuxiu asked Mrs. Xu after taking deep breaths to calm herself down, always assuming that her parents were aware of the wrongdoing Jingjing suffered. Although she had wanted to lash out at them countless times, questioning how they could heartlessly push their sister into a pit of fire, she remembered they were rural people concerned with saving face and that swallowing one's own bloodied teeth was rather common; perhaps they were no exception. Additionally, bearing feelings of guilt toward Xu Jingjing, Xu Xiuxiu had made efforts to suppress her own temper.
Everyone seemed to pretend as if nothing had happened, but ultimately, she realized that Mr. and Mrs. Xu had been kept in the dark from the beginning to end. Xu Xiuxiu thought bitterly about Xu Fangfang, "She really played her cards well!"
She had said it before; although Mr. and Mrs. Xu wanted to atone to Xu Fangfang due to guilt and may have favored Jingjing less, judging by their temperament and the way they doted on Jingjing, if they had known that Jingjing was wronged, it was completely unreasonable that they would still be happily arranging her marriage. It just didn't make sense.
Probably, Jingjing herself didn't want to tell and deliberately kept it from their parents, while Xu Fangfang, the one who harbored guilty secrets, was even less likely to confess the vile act she had committed, pushing her own sister into a fiery pit. This wasn't sisterhood; this was pure enmity!
As for another person in the know, Xu Qingqing, she knew very little to begin with. She knew that Xu Jingjing had been tricked into coming back home by Xu Fangfang but was unaware that after being deceived into returning, Xu Jingjing had been raped by Song Wenshu.
"Raped! My oldest daughter, she... she..." Mrs. Xu became visibly agitated, her entire body trembling. She didn't wait for Xu Xiuxiu to say anything more before her eyes went dark and she fainted, leaving the room once again in chaos.
