Chapter 167: Provoked Her Again
Song Yuanhuan looked at the little guy reaching out his chubby hand to him, slightly puzzling over the situation before moving forward to hold his son in his arms. Song Chengguang, held by Song Yuanhuan, turned his gaze towards Xu Xiuxiu.
Xu Xiuxiu huffed and shot a glance at the little guy, then reproachfully glared at Song Yuanhuan before turning around and walking into her bedroom. With a bang, the bedroom door was slammed shut.
Baffled, Song Yuanhuan once again touched his nose and started asking his son about the general situation. Although he knew he wouldn't get much out of his son, it was still better than entering the room cluelessly and facing his wife's cold stare!
"Son, tell me, how did you provoke your mom this time?" Song Yuanhuan asked his son in a weary, hushed voice.
Because of the unfair treatment his son had endured, he, as a man who could stand tall, didn't say much about it. After all, talking about it was merely shedding tears. However, now that his son had vexed his wife, as a man, it was his duty to step up and console her; otherwise, his future days would likely be full of turmoil.
"Mommy was crying because of Chengguang," Song Chengguang said innocently. His mom had held him when they got home and then silently began to bathe and change him, after which she just left him in the living room. He felt wronged too!
"Your mom cried?" Song Yuanhuan frowned and pressed for more.
"Yeah!" Song Chengguang nodded. "She also hit Chengguang." He pouted, complaining to his dad.
"Song Chengguang, what on earth happened?" Song Yuanhuan, irritated, picked up Song Chengguang and gave him a smack on his little bottom. "Why provoke my wife for no good reason? And made her cry? Speak up—today, you need to confess to me exactly what you did!" Song Yuanhuan's voice rose as he scolded his son, though the force he used was controlled.
Today seemed to be a hard day for little Chengguang's behind. He had sought comfort from his dad, but his dad had started hitting him after just a few questions—rougher even than his mom. Wow—baby was heartbroken and wanted to run away from home.
"Wuuu... I don't know," Song Chengguang whimpered, his lips pursed. The baby really didn't know what he had done to deserve such animosity!
"Stop crying," Song Yuanhuan said as he saw his son's eyes well up. He spoke softly to console him, "I'll go inside and see Mommy first. You be good and stay here, don't run around, okay?" Song Yuanhuan negotiated with Song Chengguang.
Song Chengguang held back his tears, then reluctantly nodded under his dad's firm persuasion—he promised he wouldn't go anywhere.
After reassuring his son, Song Yuanhuan straightened out his green military uniform. He had rushed back from the military base upon receiving his son's phone call, not even having the time to change.
In the master bedroom, Xu Xiuxiu stood by the window, sulking and looking out at the courtyard with her back to the bedroom door, feeling a surge of anger rising within her.
"Wife." Song Yuanhuan advanced with a military step and gently wrapped his arms around her slim waist from behind, "Has our son made you angry again?" Song Yuanhuan asked softly and then began to soothe, "Don't always argue with him, he is still young." Saying this, he fondly touched her still flat belly.
"Song Yuanhuan, I wasn't fighting with him. I am angry at you." Xu Xiuxiu gently pulled away Song Yuanhuan's hand that was around her waist and turned around with an annoyed glare at Song Yuanhuan.
"Me?" Song Yuanhuan frowned instantly, clearly not expecting that he would be the one to upset his wife. After all, he had been honestly working at the military base and hadn't done anything wrong!
"Yes, you!" Xu Xiuxiu glared angrily at him, "Song Yuanhuan, tell me the truth. Have you been secretly instilling in Chengguang the idea that he needs to protect me? Did you make Chengguang memorize your office phone number? Did you tell him to call you whenever there's an emergency?" Xu Xiuxiu interrogated him, her tone cooling with each question.
Looking at the furious Xu Xiuxiu, Song Yuanhuan hesitantly nodded after a long while; indeed, he had instilled those ideas, he just couldn't help feeling uneasy about her! With a child to look after, and the Sichuan Pavilion to manage, coupled with the stress of trying to buy a house, how could he not worry?
"Are you insane?" Xu Xiuxiu raised her hand and struck Song Yuanhuan's chest, "Do you realize how young Chengguang is? He's not even three years old, yet you expect him to protect me? Do you know he was flicked aside by someone today? And you even made him memorize your office number? I nearly went mad when I couldn't find him, he is so small, he can stagger and trip when walking, he doesn't even know what a phone is. He sneaked out to call you, what if he encountered a bad person? Song Yuanhuan, how could you be so heartless!" Xu Xiuxiu yelled, pounding on Song Yuanhuan's chest as if it had no effect, then she bit her lip and pinched the flesh at his waist.
"Ouch!" Song Yuanhuan inhaled sharply, "I was wrong." Song Yuanhuan let Xu Xiuxiu pinch him and lowered his voice as he bent his head closer to her nose, then affectionately rubbed her nose tip with his, "I'll never teach him the idea that a man must protect his mother again."
That kid wasn't even three years old and didn't understand anything, laughing and playing all day; indeed, he shouldn't have trusted his son so much.
"Wuwu… Song Yuanhuan, I was nearly scared to death. I couldn't find him, and I didn't know what to do?" Xu Xiuxiu muttered as she pinched, her emotions eventually breaking down.
She was truly terrified! Everything that happened today was so bizarre as if it were challenging her temper to its limits. When she hadn't seen Song Chengguang at first, her vision was going dark continuously. If it weren't for her willpower, she might have fainted on the spot.
"I'm sorry." Song Yuanhuan hugged Xu Xiuxiu tightly, lifting her and setting her down on the bed nearby, "Don't get agitated, it was my fault!" Song Yuanhuan apologized earnestly.
Song Yuanhuan was seriously remorseful, and Xu Xiuxiu looked at him for a long time but found she couldn't even get angry with him. Her punches felt light and ineffective like hitting cotton, yet his gaze clearly communicated his regret and apology.
"Never mind!" Xu Xiuxiu shook her head wearily, "I need to sleep for a while. Don't disturb me." Xu Xiuxiu felt extremely exhausted, and all she wanted was to close her eyes and sleep well.
"Okay!" Song Yuanhuan immediately helped Xu Xiuxiu lie down, then carefully covered her with a thin blanket.
Indeed, Xu Xiuxiu soon fell into a deep sleep, and Song Yuanhuan left the bedroom with furrowed brows and saw Song Chengguang sitting in a chair, eyes swollen from crying and looking at him. Song Yuanhuan slowly exhaled a turbid breath.
