I Became the Mother of His Child

Chapter 151: Xu Jingjing's Disappointment

Xiuxiu had been worried these past few days that Jingjing would be lured away by Chu Tiangu. She was on tenterhooks, wanting to give Jingjing some advice, but feared her intentions would be too obvious and perhaps upset Jingjing, sparking a rebellious reaction, which was common for girls her age.

Unexpectedly, her worries were groundless. In just a few days, Jingjing had stopped mentioning Chu Tiangu altogether. Initially puzzled, Xiuxiu brought it up one night with Yuanhuan and learned that he had been the one pulling the strings behind the scenes.

He couldn't bear to see Xiuxiu constantly furrowing her brows and worrying about Jingjing, so he had someone look into Chu Tiangu's affairs. Surprisingly, this inquiry revealed quite a bit. Chu Tiangu was truly no good. He was flirting with his sister-in-law, Jingjing, while at the same time romancing a girl from the Cultural Troupe. On top of that, supposedly back in his hometown, he was stringing along a fiancée with letters—a real scoundrel, indeed! The nerve of him, dragging three women along!

Having discreetly gathered information, Yuanhuan then had someone warn Chu Tiangu's squad leader, who was a straightforward man. After receiving the message delivered by Lieutenant Colonel Yuanhuan, the squad leader didn't hesitate to harshly discipline Chu Tiangu.

Initially, Chu Tiangu thought he might have mistakenly earned this treatment, but when he noticed the squad leader was only harsh on him, his weaker constitution soon gave in after enduring for a while. After nosing around with his possessions, he discovered it was Lieutenant Colonel Song who had intervened, claiming that Chu was too idle lately. To prevent him from pursuing his sister-in-law, the boss had ordered the squad leader to keep him busy with tasks like sweeping the field, standing night guard, and cleaning public toilets—tasks that now all fell to him alone.

At first, Chu Tiangu wanted to resist and show Yuanhuan that a man like him wasn't daunted by sweeping, guarding, or cleaning toilets. These tasks couldn't defeat him; he could complete them brilliantly and perhaps even earn Jingjing's favor. But after persisting for just two days, he broke down. Everything else was tolerable, just tiring, and he could grit his teeth through it, but lately, it seemed like a bunch of bastards were using the public toilet as if they were intentionally missing the holes. Each cleaning left him wanting to kill himself, a dirty trick through and through.

He then reflected on how these menial tasks were usually shared by all the grunts in the squad. Why should he, Chu Tiangu, single-handedly shoulder them all just for a girl he hadn't even won over? Exhausted by the endless chores assigned by his squad leader and remembering Jingjing, he spontaneously compared her with his love-at-first-sight, Xiuxiu, and suddenly felt that giving up on Jingjing might not be such a bad idea. After that, he never showed up in front of Jingjing again.

At first, Jingjing was somewhat upset—why couldn't she encounter Chu Tiangu recently? She guessed maybe he was just busy with intense training sessions and even found a reasonable excuse for him in her heart.

Little did she know, today at home when there were no fruits, she volunteered to go to the welfare store to buy some for her sister. There, she unexpectedly saw Chu Tiangu laughing and chatting with a girl in a green military uniform. As proud as Jingjing was, even in her simplicity, she understood what was happening. Without saying a word, she turned and walked away, severely annoyed, yet truly able to let go just like that.

"Xiuxiu," Xu Jingjing was utterly distraught when she got home, "Chu Tiangu is really not a good person, just like you said, he's not suitable for marriage talks..." Seeing Xu Xiuxiu, she burst into tears right away. She had walked home nonchalantly, thinking about Chu Tiangu's solicitous behavior a few days ago, and then realizing she wasn't the only one he was solicitous toward made her feel incredibly sad. So as soon as she saw her sister, she couldn't hold back her emotions any longer.

She was deceived, and it was a harsh deception.

"Don't be sad, silly girl, why cry over such an unworthy man?" Xu Xiuxiu comforted Xu Jingjing, rubbing and gently patting her back, "Si Ya, life is like this! You'll meet all kinds of jerks. It's okay to meet them; just be more careful next time. As long as you're not married, you haven't lost anything. A little heartache and emotional pain are not too late if it helps you cautiously find a good man who's right for you. Without experiencing hardship, how can you see the rainbow? Such is life, and so are relationships."

"Xiuxiu, I'm so angry. I just saw him walking with a girl in a military uniform, and I was so upset that I even forgot to go buy fruits for you," Xu Jingjing, tightly massaging Xu Xiuxiu, suddenly realized she had forgotten the purpose of her outing.

"It's okay." Xu Xiuxiu patted Xu Jingjing's back in a comforting manner, "Your brother-in-law will probably bring some when he comes home." Song Yuanhuan knew she loved fruits and could spend a day without food but never without fruits—truly a king of fruits—so usually on his way home from work, he would stop by the canteen to pick up any fresh fruits for the house.

"Okay!" Xu Jingjing nodded, wiping away her tears.

Although Xu Xiuxiu comforted her for a bit, and Xu Jingjing wasn't crying her heart out anymore, her mood was still somewhat down. Xu Xiuxiu didn't mind much, knowing the young girl just needed some time to recover.

And as Xu Xiuxiu had anticipated, although Xu Jingjing didn't buy fruits, Song Yuanhuan showed up at noon carrying a few large apples and a bag of red cherries. These cherries, unlike those later full of dyes and hormones, were really plump, making Xu Xiuxiu's mouth water.

"Chengguang can only eat ten cherries, okay! Otherwise, you won't have room for dinner," Xu Xiuxiu said as she washed the cherries and began to enjoy them. Seeing how much Song Chengguang seemed to adore the cherries, munching continuously, she counted out a few and placed them in his lap. The little guy, with a pout, looked quite aggrieved but knew very well his mom was the boss of the house and there was no arguing with her word.

"Mom, can I eat more of this fruit if I eat two bowls of rice later?" Song Chengguang tilted his head, negotiating with Xu Xiuxiu, his eyes fixed on the cherries, unable to look away.
